This study explores the critical role of ethics in business decision-making within the framework of moral philosophy, focusing on the challenges posed by economic globalization. Employing a qualitative approach through literature review and library research, the article delves into the integration of ethical considerations in corporate strategies to address the multifaceted dilemmas that arise in a globalized economy. The research highlights how moral philosophy provides a foundational framework for evaluating business practices, ensuring alignment with universal ethical principles while accommodating cultural diversity. Key themes include the impact of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics in shaping corporate policies, particularly in navigating complex global trade environments and stakeholder expectations. Findings suggest that ethical decision-making fosters trust, promotes long-term sustainability, and mitigates risks associated with unethical practices, such as reputational damage and legal penalties. The study underscores the importance of embedding ethical frameworks into corporate governance structures to address evolving challenges like labor exploitation, environmental degradation, and socio-economic inequality. Additionally, it emphasizes the role of ethical leadership in cultivating organizational cultures that prioritize integrity and accountability. The article concludes by advocating for interdisciplinary approaches combining ethics, economics, and sociology to refine decision-making frameworks suited to a globalized world. By integrating theoretical insights and practical implications, this study contributes to advancing the discourse on ethics in international business practices.
... Ethical leaders not only espouse moral principles but enact them in their behaviours, thereby setting a precedent for ethical conduct (Treviño & Nelson, 2021). By emphasising fairness, respect and trustworthiness, ethical leaders create an environment conducive to the cultivation of justice perceptions among employees (Elbaek & Mitkidis, 2023;Treviño & Nelson, 2021;Weiss, 2021). Orientation: Perceived organisational justice (POJ) and the role of human resource (HR) practices have been well documented, researched and argued. The role of leadership, and specifically the perception of ethical leadership in the relationship between HR practices and POJ has not been investigated, especially not in South Africa.Research purpose: This study aimed to determine the extent to which HRs practices influence POJ and the mediating role of ethical leadership, through a sectoral comparison.Motivation for the study: It is often, and rightfully, argued that the experience of HR practices determines employees’ perception of organisational justice; however, there is paucity in the perception of ethical leadership.Research approach/design and method: This study used a cross-sectional design and survey methodology. Convenience sampling resulted in 1184 respondents from 20 organisations in the South African private and public sectors.Main findings: A positive significant (p 0.05) relationship exists between HR practices and POJ, mediated by ethical leadership (mediation 32% for the private sector, 13% for the public sector and 21% for the combined sample).Practical/managerial implications: This research endeavour has the potential of empowering the leadership to propose concrete HRs strategies to cultivate proactive work behaviours influencing performance and competitiveness.Contribution/value-add: This study validated the ethical leadership and POJ instruments to be used with confidence in South Africa. It further emphasised the importance, not only of the perceptions of HR practices on the perception of organisational justice but also the role of leadership in this relationship, specifically ethical leadership.

Then, a company should create a stakeholder mapping as a guidance in creating CSR part of the strategy.
... There are no predetermined rights and wrongs. According to utilitarians, actions are right when they maximise the best for the greatest number of people and actions are wrong when they cause more pain than pleasure for the greatest number of people (Weiss, 2014;Vorster, 2012). Using the utilitarian model one would argue that corruption is good when it maximises the independent pleasure of the greatest number of people and that it is not good when it creates pain for the majority. ...
... Utilitarianists use two types of criteria in deciding the greatest benefit to be achieved from acting in a certain way and in analysing a particular action or behaviour to determine whether the greatest utility or good can be achieved. These are the rule-based utilitarianism and act-based utilitarianism (Weiss, 2014). It is crucial to point out that both act utilitarians and rule utilitarians agree that the overall goal in evaluating actions is to create the best results possible but they differ about how to do that. ...

This study explores the intricate relationships among business ethics, organizational policy, and strategic planning performance within Turkey’s manufacturing and service industries. The research specifically aims to (i) assess the impact of organizational policies on strategic planning performance, (ii) evaluate how business ethics shapes organizational policies and strategic outcomes, and (iii) examine the moderating role of business ethics in the relationship between organizational policy and strategic planning performance. A quantitative methodology was employed, surveying 732 managers and employees using a 21-item questionnaire with 5-point Likert scales. Data analysis included exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to validate constructs, and the Hayes PROCESS macro to evaluate moderation effects. The study provides three precise findings: first, organizational policy has a significant positive relationship with both business ethics and strategic planning performance. Second, business ethics strongly enhances strategic planning performance. Third, business ethics moderates the relationship between organizational policy and strategic planning performance, amplifying their positive interaction. This research contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence of business ethics’ moderating role, offering a comprehensive analysis within an emerging market context, and proposing an integrated framework for the interaction of these three dimensions. The findings underscore the importance of integrating ethical considerations into organizational policies to achieve enhanced strategic outcomes. These insights provide practical guidance for managers seeking to foster ethical cultures and improve organizational performance in competitive markets.

The present study is a comprehensive evaluation of a business enterprise, with the objective of assisting its management in identifying and addressing the consequences of organisational difficulties, including the formation and distribution of the economic fund created as a result of the prevention of incurred losses. The subject of this assessment is the decision-making methodology, which serves as the basis for drawing conclusions about the states of the process and includes elements for training personnel involved in the implementation of the new version of the system. The objective of methodological foundations is to facilitate the timely identification of potential vulnerabilities that could lead to future losses in sustainability. From an organisational perspective, the conditions that facilitate the implementation of unproductive proposals are being circumvented. The object under discussion is a standardised, unique management tool developed for the purpose of assessing the operational states of an organisation. The objective of this study is to develop a procedure for identifying effective methods to enhance organisational performance, while preventing unauthorised disruption to the control system. The full-scale assessment is performed through three conceptual transitions. The first of these transitions is from the initial application points to the subsequent anomaly capability principles. Finally, the standard clauses are reached. The standard provides a detailed, step-by-step account of the organisation's status. A significant element of the investigation is the provision of decision-making based on objective ratios. In order to form objective conclusions regarding the state of the organisation, recommendations are made to recover the loss of value, taking into account the localisation of the places that lead to inefficiencies. The novelty of the study lies in the development of a comprehensive document containing instructions for experts on implementing measures aimed at improving performance by eliminating the shortcomings of the original version of the real control system. The existence of the standard allows for a well-founded conclusion to be drawn regarding the organisation's performance through a combination of cost indicators designed to meet conditionally specified standards and dimensionless indicators of process capability that belong to the category of objectively defined standards. This combination permits the unlocking of the organisation's growth potential in a novel environment through the synchronisation of performance standards and efficiency metrics. Consequently, the organisation is safeguarded from implementing ineffectual changes that could result in a reduction in efficiency.
... Combining virtue ethics with stakeholder theory, it is argued that wine businesses embed concerns for inclusiveness and justice in their relationships with external stakeholders (Martínez-Falcó et al., 2023). On the one hand, inclusiveness is embraced as a virtue exhibiting the ethics of care and the willingness to generate good for society (Weiss, 2006). On the other hand, it establishes a link between business ethics and corporate strategy, which encompasses the purpose of generating the greatest good for the most people (Singer, 2018), including employees (Bressan et al., 2023). ...

Drawing on virtue ethics and stakeholder theory, the article investigates the unfolding of business ethics in the wine industry, with a focus on family businesses. Attention is specifically paid to the interplay of internal (i.e., employees-centeredness and organizational inclusiveness) and external (i.e., people-centeredness and territorial development) ethical orientations. A unique sample of 164 Italian wine businesses was built to get evidence of how the nexus of internal and external ethical orientations is handled, emphasizing the distinctive traits of family businesses. We found that employee-centeredness nurtured organizational inclusiveness and fostered people-centeredness. Interestingly, the family businesses’ concern for territorial development curbed the positive implications of employee-centeredness on people-centeredness. The study results extend scholarly knowledge, shedding light on a ‘grey’ side of family businesses’ ethics.

This study explores the role of merit within the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR), with a particular focus on support mechanisms for individuals deemed undeserving of assistance by society. The primary objective is to examine the decision-making processes within corporate entities and non-profit organizations. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research reveals the cognitive processes of the participants involved. The study examines the legitimacy of target group selection, the importance of community engagement in local contexts, and strategies for communication support. The findings identify four distinct mechanisms through which companies provide support: via external foundations, the company's own foundation, employee volunteer associations, and consortia between companies and non-profit organizations. The study's findings indicate that these methods frequently intersect, collectively forming a comprehensive support system involving multiple stakeholders. However, the effectiveness of this system is contingent upon the presence of mutual consensus among its constituents.

Health and healthcare activities consistently have business aspects, contributing to the emergence of many dialogic and polyphonic concepts such as health-business, healthcare-business, and medical-business. This greater rapprochement between business, health, and healthcare lead to the rise of ethical issues related to their professional practices. The debate over whether health and business ethics should be compatible or not has been a subject of discussion for an extended period. There is a growing trend in business and health fields towards a stronger connection between the constructed word health-business and ethics. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of several aspects of this important problem and to examine the ethical implications of health and healthcare as a business. We investigate the effective integration of business ethics and profitability in the operations of healthcare organizations. Based on a qualitative approach, we try to demonstrate that health-business ethics is not an oxymoron, but rather a pleonasm promoting a new paradigm.

Responsible management education is often viewed from an educator's rather than a student's perspective, as well as from a Global North rather than a Global South viewpoint. Addressing these gaps, this study aims to explore responsible management education through student perspectives from a Southeast Asian country. Utilizing online platforms and university channels, we recruited 542 students, with 492 valid responses analyzed. Analyzing the students' responses using keyword co-occurrence mapping, we identified a set of thematic clusters that reflect key aspects of responsible management: society, environment, company, business and responsibility, business decision, thing, and goal. These clusters were thematically grouped into a modified triple bottom line for responsible management, comprising organizational (which includes economic and ethical considerations), social, and environmental components. This grouping underscores the importance of economic considerations, ethical decision-making, environmental stewardship, and societal wellbeing in management practice. Building on these findings, we incorporate management the final component emerging from the clusters-to propose a novel model that merges the triple bottom line with locus of control, forming concentric circles that offer a more robust lens for managerial decision-making. This model highlights the varying levels of control and influence managers have over organizational, social, and environmental aspects, providing a new approach for integrating responsible management into organizational leadership taught through responsible management education. Our study thus makes a significant contribution to advancing responsible management education theory and practice by incorporating student perspectives from the Global South and introducing an innovative model-the concentric locus of control and triple bottom line model-that can be used in responsible management education to shape the managerial outlook of future business leaders.

Prelude – Special Issue Motivation The year 2023 marked the 300th anniversary of the birth of Adam Smith, the Scottish economist whose work has impacted how we think about economic principles and the dynamics implied in politics, business, and society. Known for his seminal work “The Wealth of Nations” published in 1776, Smith argued for an economic system with little unnecessary government interference. A model built on the division of labor, guided by an ‘invisible hand’, is part of the argument for free markets directed through price mechanisms and the moral conscience of self-interested people to achieve outcomes that benefit society (Stevens, 2023). Smith’s intention to articulate a liberal economic model that prioritized contributing positively to society's welfare1 however, stands in contrast to 20th-century business doctrine, which asserted that ‘their sole social responsibility was to generate as much profit as possible for their stockholders’ (Friedman, 1962, p. 133). Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept with a long history in research literature and the classroom. However, CSR mainly pertains to established companies with extensive resources and influence in markets and communities. Startups may acquire this influence, but it is likely to be in the future. As entrepreneurs build their businesses, current concerns related to establishing their products and enterprises is of utmost consideration. The startups with the most upside for investment opportunities pursue entrepreneurial innovation. Yet, entrepreneurial innovation changes not only markets but society itself. For many entrepreneurs, they do not consider the ramifications and challenges society and government may bring as the status quo is disrupted. Therefore, in this paper, we offer Entrepreneurial Innovation Responsibility (EIR) as a concept tailored to the unique challenges startup entrepreneurs may face. EIR is grounded in entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility research and is a forward-looking approach to help entrepreneurs consider and plan for stakeholders who may resist the innovations they bring to the world. We provide a four-step process for mitigating these risks, as well as examples for illustrating how the process can be applied.

Materiality analysis and stakeholder engagement are crucial processes in sustainability reports which aim to identify material issues and prioritize them based on stakeholder interests. Subjectivity in the process of determining materiality and stakeholder engagement can affect the quality of sustainability reports because management can determine the information to be published and eliminate negative information related to sustainability. This research aims to investigate the influence of board of directors’ activity, presence of independence commissioners, company financial performance, and size on materiality disclosure and stakeholder engagement in mining companies in Indonesia. Content analysis and multiple regression analysis were carried out on 70 sustainability reports. The research results show that the involvement of the board of directors and the quantity of board members have a positive and significant effect, while the presence of independence commissioners and company size do not have a significant effect on materiality and stakeholder disclosure. It is noteworthy that disclosing materiality in sustainability reports is a crucial aspect of business practices, irrespective of the company’s financial status or size. This research contributes to the disclosure of materiality and stakeholder involvement in the reporting of companies operating in Indonesia from the perspective of stakeholder theory and legitimacy theory.

Design/Methodology/Approach – A qualitative approach is applied with Open Questions Interviews towards 10 (ten) MSME actors in Indonesia who represent a range of industries including food and beverage, fashion retail, and the chemical raw materials sector The findings of this study underscore several key points: SMEs consistently exhibit dynamic capabilities, particularly in the stages of sensing and seizing opportunities, however they frequently encounter challenges when striving to advance to a transformational stage. Continuous engagement in sensing and seizing cycles is crucial for MSMEs to prosper and progress to the next level of development. However, underdeveloped SMEs encounter challenges in re-engaging these cycles effectively. Mentorship from experienced communities or business groups can enhance SMEs' willingness and ability to pursue further development. Motivational and sociological factors play a significant role in influencing dynamic capabilities within Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia. Research Limitations - As a qualitative study, this research used a limited sample of participants from the Food & Beverage, and Fashion retail sectors to acquire insights. Therefore, it is highly recommended that future research be conducted on a larger scale, involving a more diverse range of participants from various business sectors, to validate the cyclical patterns and factors influencing the Dynamic Capabilities of MSMEs in Indonesia. To the best of the author's understanding and knowledge, employing a qualitative approach in this research marks an early effort to thoroughly comprehend the consistency of Dynamic Capability Pattern, motivational and sociological forces that shape the decisions of MSMEs regarding their potential transformation.

In this research, authors aim at analyzing the connection between ethics and corporate governance and their consequences regarding organizational performance. Quantitative data was gathered from 150 firms from different industries, and pre-modeled tests such as Pearson correlation, regression analysis, and ANOVA were employed. It is clear that a relationship exists between Ethics and Corporate Governance as there is a positive correlation coefficient of 0.72 which is significant at 0.001. Taking the results of regression analysis into consideration, it is possible to state that out of the two factors considered, ethics has a slightly higher impact on the level of performance (β = 0.55, p - 0.001) than corporate governance (β = 0.45, p - 0.001), which proves the importance of ethical leadership in managing organizational performance. The ANOVA study also pointed to the fact that there were measurable differences in governance between the industries the companies belonged to (F = 4.35, sig < 0.05) with the manufacturing and to some extent finance industries having better governance mechanisms than service industry firms. The paper makes a contribution to the knowledge by filling some of the existing gaps; for example the inability to produce empirical evidence on the effect of ethics on governance and performance as well as the cross-sectional comparator analysis on the varying governing practices in different sectors. It also emphasizes the need to consider ESG factors as a key consideration in corporate governance structures. Thus, the presented results point out the necessity to address the ethical problem as a key characteristic of governance alongside with the analyses of the organisations’ sustainability and the development of strategies to increase the stakeholders’ trust.

This study examines the impact of ethical business practices on financial performance in contemporary economic management, focusing on the role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies and corporate governance structures. Using a quantitative methodology, the research analyzed financial data from firms across multiple industries, employing correlation and regression analyses to determine the relationship between ethical practices and key financial indicators, including Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Earnings Per Share (EPS), and Net Profit Margin. The results indicate a statistically significant positive correlation between ESG scores and financial performance metrics (ROA: 0.412, ROE: 0.390, EPS: 0.457, Net Profit Margin: 0.431, p < 0.01), demonstrating that ethical business conduct enhances profitability. Governance structures also played a crucial role, with the governance index showing the strongest correlation with EPS (0.495, p < 0.01), highlighting the financial advantages of corporate transparency and accountability. This study contributes to the literature by addressing methodological gaps in previous research, which often lacked empirical validation of ethical-financial linkages. The findings suggest that ethical business practices are not only a compliance requirement but also a strategic driver of financial success and investor confidence. These insights have important implications for corporate leaders, policymakers, and investors, emphasizing the necessity of integrating ethical governance and ESG principles into corporate strategy. Future research should explore long-term effects and sectoral variations to deepen the understanding of ethical business impacts.

In this paper, we expand the concept of care to encompass the researcher's reflexivity regarding their own positionality and privilege, along with the aims of the research, by embracing ethics as the bedrock of the entire research process. During the research, we have examined the ways in which the methodological approaches of the authors can be shaped with reflexivity, care and purpose, drawing on examples from published research. Historically, research ethics have often centered on the methodological aspects of scholarship. The prevailing standard has been to view ethical requirements as aspirations rather than mere obstacles. An ethical researcher not only adheres to guidelines but also demonstrates genuine concern. In order to exercise concern, an ethical researchers must actively consider and assume accountability for their ethical conduct and research objectives, situating these activities reflexively within a broader, more comprehensive scholarly inquiry process.

Normative ethical decision-making models (NEDMs) are designed to enhance ethical decision-making. NEDMs are widely employed in business contexts. Unfortunately, there is no overview of NEDMs available in the scientific literature for use in business contexts. Additionally, there is no analytical framework that allows the classification and evaluation of existing NEDMs. Our literature search identified 27 unique NEDMs published in the English-language scientific business literature through 2024. We subsequently developed a novel, four-dimensional NEDM analytical framework. Applying this framework to the identified models revealed that most NEDMs consist of five to eight steps that must be followed in a fixed sequence, omit key decision-making steps, treat decision-makers as objective, primarily engage with classical ethical theories while making minimal attempts to weigh conflicting moral norms, values or principles, and prescribe how decisions should be made rather than prescribing decision outcomes. We discuss how our framework can assist scholars and practitioners in developing, validating, and selecting NEDMs.

Disruptive shifts in the current environment are engendering uncertainty, radically changing market relationships and consumers’ priorities. This challenging-the-boundaries article introduces a new marketing paradigm, Godfather Marketing, according to which firms evolve into organizations reminiscent of ‘mafia families,’ yet completely devoid of criminal connotations. Their aim is to deeply fulfill customer needs and desires through favors, not just product sales. This approach requires customers to adhere to a mutual ‘code of honor,’ where merit is rewarded and wrongdoing punished, participating in the firm’s favor exchange network. Through a theoretical approach grounded in historical cultural factors, this article explores firm credibility, favor conditions, reciprocation methods, customer traits, and organizational dynamics. In an era where the quality of information will supersede its quantity, Godfather Marketing offers a distinct perspective, giving marketers a competitive edge for fostering consumer loyalty and local policymakers a potential tool for community governance, within a shared framework of careful controls ensuring the protection of individual freedoms.
