Prosthetic memory in the Old Testament

Abstract

In the OT "remembering" often denotes the experience of reliving special events of the past and thereby making them virtually present. Several texts are advanced in an argument that, where remembering is aided by an external sign or symbol, its function is not necessarily limited to the prevention of forgetting but also to stimulate constructive mental action. It is proposed to interpret this with the help of the thesis of "prosthetic memory" put forward by Alison Landsberg for the visual arts. The visual aid does not only prevent knowledge of the past to fade away, but positively stimulates new interpretive action. It is shown that this nuance is combined with the idea of education where prosthetic memory occurs in the OT. It is proposed that the purpose of these prostheses to memory is the pertinent interpretation of Torah and educational instructions as well as their translation into acts appropriate to new contexts.

Israel is pictured in the OT as the segulla of YHWH, thus becoming his treasured or special possession through his redemptive love. This creates a special relationship between YHWH and Israel with obligations. How was Israel to respond to the redemptive love of God through which it became his elect? Through narrative analysis and the conceptual framework of redemption in the OT, this paper explores the OT theme of redemptive love of God in the book of Exodus. It traces and explains the redemptive love of God for his people and the consequences and the obligations of Israel in the face of this redemptive love. Due to this special love of YHWH, Israel was obliged to obey him through the observance of his commandments to remain his special people and a worshipping community. Obedience to God's commandment, meant to be Israel's reciprocal love for YHWH, was thus to become the determining factor in Israel's relationship to God. Nonetheless, Exodus witnesses as well to the infidelity of Israel in the face of its obligation to obey YHWH.

Research indicates that preachers and listeners contend with a process of remembrance, that is, among others, a particular form of recognition characterised by when they participate in listening to what has been labelled the folly of preaching. This article identifies two focal points in the listening process, namely listening as a predominant activity during participation as well as listening that leads to changes in perception which, in their turn, lead to a difference in actions. The research question is: Is it possible that cognizance of the concept of remembrance could enhance a homiletical praxeology of seeing and re-chewing of what is being heard? A listener's remembrance has to do with recollecting familiar things, events and words. Remembering brings new meaning and understanding. Recognition is the spark that ignites participants' ability to take part in the listening process. This investigation was conducted on the basis of a practical-theological vantage point and interdisciplinary engagement with social psychology and communication sciences. Anamnesis was examined from the perspective of recognition as viewed in terms of the Old and New Testament with emphasis on the sermon to the Hebrews. The article closes with perspectives on the creative functioning of recognition as a part of active listening and the importance of re-chewing of what is being heard.

Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This research has an inter-disciplinary focus. The concept of recognition (remembrance) is scrutinised in utilising perspectives from the viewpoint of social psychology as well as communication sciences in order to indicate why active listening is pivotal during the act of listening to sermons.

From the perspective of cultural memory the cultic tradition of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread in Exodus 13:3-10 acted as a sign (‘אֹ֜ות ’) and a memorial or commemoration (‘ זִכָּרֹון ’) of the Exodus as an act of divine deliverance. The dialectic between ‘sign’ and ‘memorial/commemoration/reminder’ is framed by references to the consecration of the first-born male (13:1-2, 11-15) and the phylacteries (‘tefillin’) that functioned as a sign (‘אֹ֜ות ’) on the hand and symbols (‘טֹוטָֹּ ֹ֖ פת ’) on the forehead (13:16). Exodus 13 is not merely the duplication of material arguing for the observance of the Passover in the previous chapter (12:14-28) but it constitutes a combination of the cognitive act of remembering and the ritual act of comme-moration. It will be argued that the central role of memory and commemoration as complementary concepts in the observance of the Passover and the Feast of the Unleavened Bread is expanded by adding the instruction of wearing a ‘sign’ on the hand and between the eyes. These signs can be considered as embodied metaphors respectively for power and action and for perception and observation; thus going beyond the mere ritual or cultic commemoration of the exodus. This interpretation will be tested by comparing Exodus 13 with other texts in the Hexateuch where a similar link between ‘sign’ and ‘memorial’ is found. The element of ‘sign’ adds to the notion of ritual commemoration the cognitive evocation of remembrance – a potent mechanism to enhance the identity shaping function of cultural memory (Ex 12:13; Num 17:3,5; Josh 4:6f).
