Evidence and Cognitive Neuroscience: The Case of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Functional magnetic resonance imaging is one of the most commonly used neuroimaging techniques in cognitive neuroscience. Its influence had a central role in establishing the experimental side of the field. Given this, we consider that its status as a source of evidence has not been sufficiently dealt within the philosophical literature. We focus on this issue from the standpoint of the classical problem of defining the scope of localizationist approaches in neuroscience. We attend to the way this tension unfolds today, considering some recent examples of neuroscientific approaches that tackle the dynamic character of the brain's large scale activity. We take into account a number of limitations that functional magnetic resonance imaging presents, distinguishing those of them whose treatment involves not merely technical issues. On the basis of an analysis of some ways researchers deal with them, we claim that there is a considerable extent in which this kind of neuroimaging studies can be oriented according to general assumptions and theoretical considerations. We conclude that this particular theoretical permeability is a main factor affecting the technique's status as neuroscientific evidence.

New imaging techniques in cognitive neuroscience have produced a deluge of information correlating cognitive and neural phenomena. Yet our understanding of the inter-relationship between brain and mind remains hampered by the lack of a theoretical language for expressing cognitive functions in neural terms. We propose an approach to understanding operational laws in cognition based on principles of coordination dynamics that are derived from a simple and experimentally verified theoretical model. When applied to the dynamical properties of cortical areas and their coordination, these principles support a mechanism of adaptive inter-area pattern constraint that we postulate underlies cognitive operations generally.

fMRI is a very important tool both in the field of Clinical Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neurocience. In the clinical domain, it is mostly used to locate functional regions such as those associated with motor or language processes, although new applications are being developed. Its use in research has permitted the confirmation, extension and rejection of theoretical models about brain functions. The rapid growth in the use of this technique in both clinical environment and in research, together with its fast development, generates the need to understand the advantages and limits of this technique in order to allow for more appropriate and objective conclusions. To achieve so, it is vital to properly understand how the images are generated and analyzed, in order to avoid some common mistakes regarding their interpretation. Thus, the main objective of this article is to present a general yet detailed review of the various steps involved in the design, acquisition, analysis and interpretation of fMRI experiments.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has had a substantial clinical impact since the first commercial scanners were introduced in the early 1980s. The ability to image most human tissue and a wide range of pathologies at high-resolution and high anatomic contrast has led to the explosive propagation of MRI scanners worldwide. Anatomic MRI has enabled identification of tumors, lesions, and other pathologies throughout the body and has been particularly effective and suitable for brain imaging due to the predominance of its MR-differentiable soft tissue, lack of motion, and high levels of magnetic field homogeneity relative to the rest of the body.

For over a century, the neuron doctrine - which states that the neuron is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system - has provided a conceptual foundation for neuroscience. This viewpoint reflects its origins in a time when the use of single-neuron anatomical and physiological techniques was prominent. However, newer multineuronal recording methods have revealed that ensembles of neurons, rather than individual cells, can form physiological units and generate emergent functional properties and states. As a new paradigm for neuroscience, neural network models have the potential to incorporate knowledge acquired with single-neuron approaches to help us understand how emergent functional states generate behaviour, cognition and mental disease.

Brain Images, Babies, and Bathwater: Critiquing Critiques of Functional Neuroimaging

Since the mid-1980s, psychologists and neuroscientists have used brain imaging to test hypotheses about human thought processes and their neural instantiation. In just three decades, functional neuroimaging has been transformed from a crude clinical tool to a widely used research method for understanding the human brain and mind. Such rapidly achieved success is bound to evoke skepticism. A degree of skepticism toward new methods and ideas is both inevitable and useful in any field. It is especially valuable in a science as young as cognitive neuroscience and its even younger siblings, social and affective neuroscience. Healthy skepticism encourages us to check our assumptions, recognize the limitations of our methods, and proceed thoughtfully. Skepticism itself, however, also must be examined. In this article, I review the most commonly voiced criticisms of functional neuroimaging. In the spirit of healthy skepticism, I will critically examine these criticisms themselves. Each contains at least a kernel of truth, although I will argue that in some cases the kernel has been overextended in ways that are inaccurate or misleading.
