Abstract

This study investigated the influence of dictionaries in the collocational competence of 97 German university students of Spanish as a Foreign Language. A lexical task was designed: using the Plan Curricular of the Instituto Cervantes to choose ten verb-noun collocations-ten for each of the five levels of learner proficiency- and we elaborated a cloze activity (without the verbs). First of all the students had to complete the gaps without any support; in order to gauge their knowledge of the construction of these structures. Afterwards, they received a dossier with entries for each of the nouns in the collocations and were asked to fill the gaps again. Results showed that with the use of these lexical dossiers, the students' collocational knowledge improved.
