Abstract

This report extends and updates an ongoing program of research analyzing Americans' interpretations of and responses to climate change. This research segments the American public into six audiences that range along a spectrum of concern and issue engagement from the Alarmed, who are convinced of the reality and danger of climate change, and who are highly supportive of personal and political actions to mitigate the threat, to the Dismissive, who are equally convinced that climate change is not occurring and that no response should be made.

... As a result, research on climate change perceptions and climate change communication has mushroomed in past years (for overviews see Leiserowitz et al., 2009;Nisbet et al., 2018;Wolf & Moser, 2011). However, this research has a number of shortcomings, two of which are particularly relevant for this study: First, scholarship is strongly biased towards "Western," industrialized countries, while countries from the "Global South" 1 have received far less scholarly attention, with European and North American countries (Leiserowitz et al., 2009) receiving most scholarly attention and African, Asian and Latin American nations receiving little interest (Leiserowitz, 2007;Schäfer & Schlichting, 2014), even though climate change impacts there are often more pronounced than elsewhere (IPCC, 2018). ...

Second, scholarship is mostly based on standardized methods, often representative quantitative surveys (Lorenzoni & Pidgeon, 2006;Wolf & Moser, 2011), which offer insights into general patterns of climate change perceptions and communication, but which are less suitable for detailed, close descriptions of individual perceptions of climate change and the related use of media and other information sources (Whitmarsh, 2009). ...

Climate change-related perceptions and communication are important factors influencing people’s support for climate change policies and individual behavior. Since research on both climate change-related perceptions and communication is biased towards Western countries and standardized research methodologies, this paper investigates perceptions across South African communities using a deductive-inductive qualitative approach. 20 individuals in three communities of a South African town were interviewed about their climate change-related perceptions and communication. Results show that for individual concepts of climate change, interviewees’ perceptions differed across the communities: higher educated communities had more differentiated and diverse conceptions of causes and consequences of climate change and potential countermeasures. Most interviewees, across the communities, stressed that they considered climate change as an important problem, although other social problems seemed more pressing. Interestingly, all three communities most frequently encounter the issue of climate change through new and traditional mass media, but their self-assessed knowledge about it varies widely.

... Climate change risk perception does not only vary over time, but also between countries (Lee, Markowitz, Howe, Ko, & Leiserowitz, 2015;(Reser et al., 2012)) and between people in the same country (Leiserowitz, Maibach, Roser-Renouf, & Smith, 2011;Tranter, 2013). Therefore, much work has sought to identify the predictors of risk perception. ...

We extended a recent model of climate change risk perception (van der Linden, 2015) to predict the risk perception of Australians and their willingness to engage in mitigation behaviours (N = 921). Affect, mitigation response inefficacy, and descriptive norms were the most important predictors of risk perception, highlighting the influence of affective, cognitive, and socio-cultural factors. Affect and mitigation response inefficacy were also important predictors of behavioural willingness, but socio-cultural influences (free-market ideology, prescriptive norms, and biospheric values) played a relatively larger role in explaining the variance of behavioural willingness. Structural equation modelling provided further evidence that risk perception and behavioural willingness are separable constructs, as some factors in the model had direct effects on willingness independent of risk perception. We discuss the need for future research to develop a comprehensive model of behavioural willingness, and the need for public communication to combat mitigation response inefficacy.
... Despite its limitations, the model has been widely used by scholars, policymakers, and other actors (Horton & Doran, 2011;Miller, Rathouse, Scarles, Holmes, & Tribe, 2010;Zimmermann et al., 2012). Segmentation has also been frequently utilized to improve the communication of risk in the field of perceptions and attitudes toward climate change (Hine et al., 2014;Hine et al., 2013) For instance, the Global Warming's Six Americas Model (Leiserowitz, Maibach, & Roser-Renouf, 2010;Leiserowitz, Maibach, Roser-Renouf, & Hmielowski, 2012;Leiserowitz, Maibach, Roser-Renouf, & Smith, 2011) classifies the population into six segments according to beliefs, concerns, and motivation to fight climate change: alarmed, concerned, cautious, disengaged, doubtful, and dismissive. In recent years, domain-specific segmentation models have also been developed to allow a better understanding of the motivation and perceived barriers for different audiences regarding specific environmental behaviors, such as recycling (Barr et al., 2013), energy conservation (Ben & Steemers, 2018), or urban transportation (Barr & Prillwitz, 2012). ...

Various medium-sized cities in southern Chile are saturated by air pollution caused by woodsmoke. In this study, we developed a segmentation model to assess the public’s perceptions, understanding of health risks and emotional responses to poor air quality. To date, this is the first segmentation model dealing with public perception in cities contaminated by woodsmoke. A survey ( N = 489) was conducted in Temuco and Padre las Casas, Chile, which included questions regarding attitudes, sociodemographic factors, and health care behaviors, to obtain information for mitigation initiatives. Through a cluster analysis, three population segments were identified that related differently to environmental pollution, which were constructed based on seven psychosocial variables. Different sociodemographic profiles and self-reported behavioral patterns were found, which should guide policies aimed at improving air quality in cities contaminated by pollution from wood-burning stoves.

Most governments and the vast majority of scientists agree that climate change is inevitable and anthropogenic in origin, yet the issue persists as a deeply divisive issue within the American psyche (Pew Research Center, 2016). Leiserowitz, Maibach, Roser-Renouf, and Smith (2011) conducted a survey to gauge concerns, engagement with, and opinions of the American public regarding climate change. Their study segmented Americans into six audiences (i.e., "Six Americas") that ranged along a spectrum from Alarmed (convinced of the reality and danger of climate change and highly supportive of individual and political action to mitigate climate change) to Dismissive (equally certain that climate change is not occurring and that no action should be taken). ...

Designing effective communications aimed at climate change adaptation has proven to be one of the most challenging problems that humans face. However, there exist strategies tied to communities of interest that hold great potential for inducing resilience and sustainability as this planet warms beyond 2°centegrade. In this review article, we provide representative examples of how one organization, Trout Unlimited, focuses on the conservation of trout populations in the United States and uses place-based framing to leverage other pragmatic considerations that may significantly mitigate some of the problems faced by climate change communicators. This case study illustrates how Trout Unlimited’s public outreach reflects some best practices of effective climate change messaging by situating risks in a local context, evoking emotional responses to place-based threats, describing how other members normally behave, showing the immediate gains to be had through conservation actions, and targeting specific values shared within the organization.

Introduction A critical component to addressing climate change is effective communication with the public and legislators about urgency for action. Health professionals have a vital role to play in climate advocacy. However, several key barriers to public advocacy have been identified, including limited communication skills to effectively advocate with others. Methods We describe the development, implementation, and evaluation of a novel online workshop, whose goal is to teach volunteers to communicate more effectively on climate change with those holding differing views regarding potential solutions (e.g., role of government vs. private sector). The development phase included seeking input from multiple stakeholders about the workshop's focus and creating specific examples and prompts. The workshop was then pilot-tested, and refinements were made based on evaluations. Volunteers within a climate organization then took the workshop and evaluations were collected. Results Evaluations from 312 attendees were analyzed, including 14% in healthcare-related fields. On a 10-point scale (10 being highest), volunteers reporting a median score of 8 in their confidence level for setting a constructive tone in conversations with people holding differing views on climate solutions. Qualitative analysis of participants’ responses “Single most important learning?”, “What was most important to share?”, and “What would you like to see changed?” by two independent observers supported almost perfect agreement (kappa of 0.88) in themes that included Learning New Skills, Developing New Ways of Being, Format, and Additional Training/Suggested Enhancements. Discussion Our workshop increased participant confidence in having conversations on climate change solutions, an important part of climate advocacy.

Decades after the scientific community agreed on the existence of human-made climate change, substantial parts of the world’s population remain unaware or unconvinced that human activity is responsible for climate change. Belief in human-made climate change continues to vary strongly within and across different countries. Here I analyse data collected by the Gallop World Poll between 2007 and 2010 on individual attitudes across 143 countries, using a random forest model, to show that country-level conditions like environmental protection, civil liberty, and economic development are highly predictive of individual climate change belief. Individual education and internet access, in contrast, are correlated to climate change awareness, but much less to belief in climate change’s anthropogenic causes. I also identify non-linear pattern in which country-level circumstances relate to individual climate change belief. The local importance of most predictors varies strongly across countries, indicating that each country has its relatively unique set of correlates of climate change belief. Country-level conditions such as civil liberty are highly predictive of climate change belief, whereas individual attributes such as education are related more to awareness than belief, suggests a random-forest analysis of individual attitudes in 143 countries.

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of film in communicating issues related to climate change. While previous studies demonstrate an immediate effect of a film post-screening, this study also considered if a film can inspire long-term effects, and if supplemental educational information plays a role on participant understanding. Design/methodology/approach: Using surveys, we assessed undergraduate students’ climate change responses pre-, immediately-post, and 9-weeks post watching the climate change documentary The Human Element (Prod. Earth Vision Institute, 2018). In the 9-week interim before the final survey, half of the participants received weekly information on climate change via a custom website, while the other half served as a control. Nonparametric statistical tests were completed in SPSS to determine significant changes across all three surveys. Findings: Friedman tests and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests demonstrate statistically significant self-reported impacts on climate change responses such as of motivation, concern, and understanding immediately post-screening. At 9-weeks, 3 × 2 Mixed ANOVAs demonstrate that the group that received the website reported statistically significantly higher understanding than those in the control group. However, the website has no statistically significant effect on other responses like motivation and concern. Originality/value: These results highlight the important power of film’s visual appeals in framing climate change. We also show that there is a long term effect of film on participant understanding. The study also prompts questions about current models of climate change education, which emphasize objective understanding, often without viable support structures to help students’ concern and motivation to act.

Public attitude surveys are the prime method used to assess public attitudes to science and technology, but can also be very problematic—as evidenced in the number of different polls that come up with different findings. Toward better understanding of what drives public attitudes, it has become more relevant to find out “Why” people think what they do about science and technology than to know “What” they think. Recent research into how values drive attitudes has been very important to our increased understanding. However, in a post-truth, post-trust, post-expert world—where notions of truth, trust, and expertise are now commonly contested—we need to also better understand the social and media environments we are now living in, and how they affect attitudes to new technologies.
