Sadašnji i mogući dometi mostova velikih raspona (Present and possible achievements of large span bridges)

The paper presents ten largest bridges for each specific type of construction: suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges, arch bridges, truss bridges and beam bridges. They are lined up by the length of span. Besides present records, estimate sketches for the maximal possible spans, as well as the state of the construction, design and conception of the large span bridges are shown. The paper shortly presents the design of some significant engineering structures on the Zagreb-Split Highway section from Pirovac to Vrpolje with the emphasis on the main characteristics of the proposed design solutions. The paper deals with some factors and procedures employed for ensuring the quality and safety of concrete bridges. It stresses the importance of professional control in each phase of engineering works, continuous monitoring of changes in bridges in use as well as the necessity of automatic and planned recording and processing of all data on bridges. Such comprehensive and detailed analyses can lead to an estimation of the bearing capacity, safety and usability of bridges and to a prediction of the bridge durability. Special attention should be paid to the economic aspects of the bridge construction which should be ensured by a suitable bridge management system. Nowadays, we are witnesses of significant projects and engineering works connecting different parts of Croatia with the network of fast and safe motorways. These motorways incorporate a large number of bridges which have already been built or are in the construction phase. [Show full abstract] development of the country and on the other side it has negative influence on the environment changing it forever considering its different aspects, i.e. visually, biological, ecological, cultural and functional. Hence, it is necessary to protect inherited environment not only by legislation but by a detailed and carefully developed management procedure. Also, it is important and necessary to built structures of long-lasting esthetical and functional values with lowest possible financial costs. This paper proposes the possibility of improving the bridge management and organization system by introducing new appropriate standards and by constituting a special institution employing skilled experts. Based on the clearly developed and prescribed procedures and standards and after consultations with the investors such professional institution (or institutions) should bring decisions concerning full bridge management from the very first idea to the end of its service life including bridge demolition and environment recovery.

The formulation of new fully compatible quadrilateral shell finite element

This paper describes the formulation of the new fully compatible quadrilateral shell finite element. In the membrane state, i.e. plane state, full compatibility is achieved by introducing in-plane rotational degrees of freedom at each node, thus completely separating the rotational part of the displacement field from the translational part. In the way the shape functions are chosen the continuity ... [Show full abstract] of displacements and their first derivatives at the nodes are achieved. In the transverse direction, there exists also the continuity of the displacement field at the nodes; the continuity is satisfied, even, in the combinations with shear deformations. Therefore, this new element can be applied to, both, thick and thin plates and shells. Consequently, it is possible to combine membrane and bending states and hence, the new quadrilateral finite element with six degrees of freedom at each node is obtained. This new finite element is fully compatible by itself but it is also fully compatible in combination with beam and truss elements. Thus, it may be used to model many engineering structures, like shell and flat structures and their combinations with or without beam elements. Incorporating concentrated forces and moments in the membrane state, either directly by loading or due to the connections of the other elements with membrane elements, results in a phenomenon related to this formulation of finite elements which the authors called numerical curvature of the space. The proposed shell finite element is tested using an appropriate numerical algorithm by the solution procedure for a few practical engineering structures.
