The Hispanic-French exhibition of 1908 was an important social, cultural and artistic event that integrated fine arts and arts&crafts, including the architecture of the main buil-dings and the masterpieces showed inside them, also the ephemeral architectures built for the seven months that lasted the exhibition and the monuments that remained in different places of the city to conmemorate the recent history of Zaragoza. Therefore, it was the main and most complete artistic and cultural panorama in our capital in the XXth century.

Recent scholarship has adopted diametrically opposed positions with regard to the significance of the polis in Sophocles' Electra. This article argues that neither scholarly extreme is tenable, and attempts a more nuanced analysis of the question, paying close attention to the prominent placing of references to the polis in the play.

Does Inequality lead to Conflict?

This paper presents a simple model to show how distributional concerns can engender social conflict. We have a two period model, where the cost of conflict is endogenous in the sense that parties involved have full control over how much conflict they can create. We find that anticipated future inequality plays a crucial role in determining the level of conflict in the current period. The model ... Kutatásunkban azt vizsgáltuk, hogy a 19. század első felének Magyarországán a városi lakosság, illetve annak különböző csoportjai milyen mértékben éltek a közép- és felsőfokú iskolázás lehetőségével, és hogyan alakult a városok kulturális vonzásának rádiusza a tanulók származáshelyi összetétele alapján. Ezek megválaszolásához hoztuk létre számítógépes adatbázisainkat, amelyek az egykori pozsonyi ... [Show full abstract] és kassai tankerület felsőbb, azaz közép- és felsőfokú iskoláinak anyakönyvi adatait tartalmazzák, három mintavételi időpontban. Az adatbázis közel 24.000 diák adatait tartalmazza. Az adatbázisok révén részletesen elemeztük a két tankerület iskoláinak diáklétszáma alakulását, osztályonkénti megoszlását, felekezeti arányaikat, lakóhelyi-területi származásukat, illetve a szülők társadalmi helyzetét. A két tankerület diákságának társadalmi összetétele, száma, illetve az iskolai osztályokban való eloszlása alapján az iskoláztatás szempontjából mutatkozó területi, regionális különbségekre, az egyes városok között jelentkező eltérésekre is sikerült rámutatnunk. | Our research concentrated on the various ways city dwellers belonging to different social strata used secondary and higher education in the first half of the 19-th century in Hungary. The first step was to define the role of cultural attraction Hungarian towns of the era played, basically by identifying students places of origin. We created a database of the original school registers which contained data of students attending secondary and higher education in the Pozsony and Kassa school districts. Our sample, nearly 24 000 students altogether, was taken from three decades in the first half of the 19-th century. With the help of our database we examined the changes in the number of students in the different classes of the schools in the two districts, together with their confessional composition, social background and place of origin. The changing number, social composition and 'class structure' of students made it possible to outline basic diffrerences among towns and regions as school towns and places of origin.

Both Othello and The Merchant of Venice reveal a view of Venice as a particular kind of social world. Both plays offer a tension between the ‘idealists’ and the ‘real’ world of law and commerce and political expediency. [Show full abstract] commerce is to be effectively carried on. Law and expediency are, in a sense, opposites. The Duke in The Merchant of Venice expresses himself helpless before the law; in Othello the Duke sets the law aside in the interests of political expediency. In The Merchant of Venice the law must be protected because it guarantees commerce; in Othello Othello must be protected because he guarantees commerce. Commerce is thus the middle term in which law and expediency meet. There is a paradoxical flavour about such a term, and we are perhaps reminded of the multiplying paradoxes of both plays, or even the downright contradictions and plain nonsense of Iago, or the sinister wilfulness of Shylock. Iago and Shylock represent a challenge to Venice precisely because they exploit the structure of Venice. Both law and expediency are dishonest in terms of each other. Law represents a rigidity which denies flexibility, expediency a flexibility which denies the absolute nature of moral values.

In this article, the Nuremberg humanist and advisor to the city council, Christoph Scheurl II, is examined. In particular, I look at the ways in which his decisions were forced by specific social settings. These social considerations often lay far from questions of religious belief, and thus the study of Scheurl’s career can illuminate many aspects of the process of decision-making in the early Reformation.

Calidris canutus and C. maritima were shown to be able to use taste to locate food when probing in wet sandy substrates. However, the behaviour of C. canutus and the results obtained with hard-shelled prey suggested that taste normally does not play a role while probing, resulting in a more prominent role for (individual) touch- and (social) flock-information. C. maritima's potential turned out ... [Show full abstract] to be of the same useful level as that for C. alpina and C. alba which were investigated by VAN HEEZIK et al. (1983). The relative importance of taste during probing is compared with other senses and is discussed for these four species in relation to their customary foraging behaviour while at wintering quarters. Current approaches in wader foraging studies should have included the use of taste for enhanced prey detection as a tenable possibility. Furthermore it is concluded that tastebuds must occur in the tip of the beak of the four Calidris species tested.

Tracing the Social Style of Toddler Peers

The main theme of the present article is an attempt to trace the typical social style of toddlers, as this style may be argued to emerge in studies focusing on interaction and play among 1- and 2-year-old peers in their everyday life of public daycare. 'Style' is regarded as a phenomenological construct, implying the effort of making explicit the typicality of a phenomenon. The actual phenomenon ... [Show full abstract] in question is the characteristic style running through toddlers' different ways of socialising with peers, as these appear in a reader's interpretation of the results of toddler peer research. Based on the social phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty, performance of the actions that are considered to contribute to this commonality or style are presupposed to contain social intentions and certain meanings. The toddler style is traced under the headings: (i) play sequences and routines; (ii) construction of shared meaning; (iii) affiliative structures.
