ExistentialHumanistic Therapy
SECOND EDITION
Kirk J. Schneider and Orah T. Krug
Existentialhumanistic therapy is a unique approach that welds European existential
philosophy with humanistic principles of psychotherapy. Emphasizing personal
freedom, responsibility, and experiential reflection, it can help clients develop a
deeper understanding of their authentic life goals, rather than artificial goals
imposed by others or a rigid sense of self.
Kirk Schneider and Orah Krug explore the theory, history, research, and
practice of existentialhumanistic therapy in this revised guide that is equally
valuable to graduate students and seasoned clinicians. New review of contemporary
research illuminate this approach’s increasingly integrative perspective and growing
influence on clinical psychology.

... Four theoretical approaches inform the service provision and curricula created for each F4T signature intervention -multicultural (Sue et al., 1996), existential-humanistic (Schneider & Krug, 2017), ecological (Cauce et al., 2002;Stormshak & Dishion, 2002), and social learning theory (Bandura, 1971). Multicultural counseling theory asserts that culture is an important determinant of what people bring to the clinical setting in terms of how they express and report symptoms, seek and utilize supports, and engage with coping strategies (Gibbs & Hung, 2003;Ratts et al., 2016;Singh et al., 2012;Sue et al., 1996). ...
Article
Culturally grounded therapeutic services orchestrated to meet the needs of African American youth remain sparse. The authors address this gap in the areas of scholarship and clinical practice by detailing Future 4 Teens (F4T), an integrated community therapy and education service model targeting African American youth ages 12– 21 years old. Based on interview data from former F4T participants (n = 8; M age = 21.62 years), the authors also highlight salient components of the interventions contributing to its effectiveness and subsequent impact on African American youth’s psychosocial functioning and academic engagement.
