Among data mining tasks, characterization does not attract much attention from researchers, in comparison to classification. It seems to us an interesting task, since it does not require negative examples, which may be a strong requirement for real applications. In this paper, we present a general framework for the characterization of a target set of objects by means of their own properties, but

In the case of geographic databases, spatial relations express links between geographic objects. We propose some algorithms for mining characterization rules, and we show how they have been applied to a real geographic application provided by BRGM.
