Dutch Environmentalism at the Turn of the Century

During the last decade the Dutch environmental movement has gone through a number of transformations. For instance, the institutionalisation of the movement, started in the 1980s resulted in an increase of its constituency to a never experienced sum total of almost four million members and supporters. [Show full abstract] the past the political ecology branch, along with the conservationists, constituted the most important part of the movement, during the 1990s the emergence of a large number of new animal protection and alternative-exemplary groups could be observed. A third transformation has to do with changes in the relationship between the environmental movement and the Dutch political system. Whereas the Netherlands have always had a long tradition of co-operation between the government and all kinds of social groups, during the 1990s a basic split could be observed. While some groups participated ever more closely in neo-corporatist structures known as the 'green polder model', others decided to take a different political strategy and to act at a greater and critical distance from government. A fourth transformation, finally, is a consequence of the organisational development and differentiation aforementioned. The emergence of new groups with new topics of attention means the emergence of new issues at the public and political agenda. These new groups and issues partly originate from the internationalisation of the environmental problematique during the 1990s; and are also connected to the rise of the anti-globalisation movement from the end of the decade onward. In this profile I shall focus on only one of the transformations: organisational development and differentiation. Which changes in the composition of the institutionalised part of the Dutch environmental movement could be observed?.

The city of Paris has been extremely active on programmes and projects concerning biodiversity, greening, urban agriculture [UA] and food initiatives. Our leading question in this paper is: which are the critical points that explain such a lively process? [Show full abstract] showing that UA and food growing importance results from a unique combination of, at least, four critical factors: A facilitating policy framework; A highly qualified professional and institutional profile of the promoters: A holistic and inter-disciplinary approach to UA that helps in including and connecting a larger number of actors and gain a critical mass; A very conscious consumer mindset that increased the demand for local food. In a nutshell, those critical factors contribute to UA and food emergence, and make the city a unique research case to understand UA future models, at least in Europe-an countries.

Creep and temperature-dependent creep, characteristic of one-component polyurethane adhesives for wet and green structural wood gluing are two different parameters. Testing of standards-approved commercial polyurethane adhesives for this purpose shows that while ambient temperature creep can be avoided or at least greatly limited according to the formulation used, this is not the case for ... [Show full abstract] temperature-dependent creep. The commercial adhesive formulation characteristics that minimize or enhance ambient temperature and temperature-dependent creep are identified. Basic principles on the structure of simple polyurethane adhesives influencing temperature-dependent creep are also identified and discussed. The higher the proportion of all hardened network nodes, the lower creep is likely to be at ambient temperature. Instead, due to segment movement and easier disentanglement with increasing temperature, the lower the proportion of covalently linked nodes and the greater the proportion of just physical entanglement nodes, the greater the temperature-dependent creep will be. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. MATLAB environment was used to build an optimization model to find the optimal lane groups at all intersection approaches for hypothetical massive traffic demand combinations using an objective function of minimizing intersection delay. This finding represents a plausible quick method to predict the optimum lane group in the field instantaneously using the percentage of turning movements at the approach without conducting massive calculations.

The leveling data reveal no significant tectonic motion except the direct effects of earthquakes. Trilateration data show steadily accumulating shear strain, but previously reported episodic dilatations probably result from systematic errors.

Using three levels model based on fuzzy -neural networks (FNN), we can determine whether to extend or terminate the current signal phase and select the sequences of phases. Simulation results show that the fuzzy controller has the ability to adjust its signal timing in response to changing traffic conditions on a real-time basis, and our proposed controller produces lower vehicle delays and percentage of stopped vehicles than the traffic- actuated controller.
