... The exploitation of such data has many applications, from preservation and facilitating access, to exploration and creation of links for the discovery of other information. It is important to point out that the interpretation of CH sites should explore the significance of each site in its multi-faceted historical, political, spiritual, and artistic contexts [2]. ...
... One such project was implemented in the Republic of Korea [2], in Injeongjeon, the main hall of the Changdeokgung Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The project developed an outdoor AR information browser, that could offer contextual information related to the CH sites. ...
... Marker based techniques have been used in outdoor applications [12,10]. For example, Kim et al [10] use the Vuforia AR plugin 9 for Unity 10 to provide information about three Korean cultural heritage sites. ...
... Marker based techniques have been used in outdoor applications [12,10]. For example, Kim et al [10] use the Vuforia AR plugin 9 for Unity 10 to provide information about three Korean cultural heritage sites. All of the sites have good features for marker based detection, although they are focusing on information display rather than augmenting the sites themselves. ...
... Based on a previous study [23] that proposed an application of AR to explore contextual information about cultural heritage sites, we developed an information modeling framework for mobile AR systems and we conducted a user study to identify the specific consumption patterns related to the information and contents in the system. To assess the proposed approach, we considered a cultural heritage site called Injeongjeon Hall and its vicinity in Changdeokgung Palace, Seoul (South Korea). ...
... Cultural heritage items related directly to the POI are located at the first level of information depth. Cultural heritage items related to the cultural heritage items that are also related directly to the POI correspond to the second level of information depth [23]. At both levels of information depth, there are two information viewing steps: the preview and detailed content view. ...

Augmented reality (AR) has received much attention in the cultural heritage domain as an interactive medium for requesting and accessing information regarding heritage sites. In this study, we developed a mobile AR system based on Semantic Web technology to provide contextual information about cultural heritage sites. Most location-based AR systems are designed to present simple information about a point of interest (POI), but the proposed system offers information related to various aspects of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, linked to the POI. This is achieved via an information modeling framework where a cultural heritage ontology is used to aggregate heterogeneous data and semantically connect them with each other. We extracted cultural heritage data from five web databases and modeled contextual information for a target heritage site (Injeongjeon Hall and its vicinity in Changdeokgung Palace in South Korea) using the selected ontology. We then implemented a mobile AR application and conducted a user study to assess the learning and engagement impacts of the proposed system. We found that the application provides an agreeable user experience in terms of its affective, cognitive, and operative features. The results of our analysis showed that specific usage patterns were significant with regard to learning outcomes. Finally, we explored how the study’s key findings can provide practical design guidance for system designers to enhance mobile AR information systems for heritage sites, and to show system designers how to support particular usage patterns in order to accommodate specific user experiences better.
... For systems to teach Tsamiko and salsa dances, Chantas et al. (2018, 3) cited the efficacy of ontologies for ICH safe-guarding as "platforms that … manage to aggregate content of various CH domains in a large-scale database and provide convenient access to that data." Ontologies have also supported interactive educational systems like i-Treasures (Dimitropoulοs et al. 2018) for European intangible culture, an augmented mobile application about Korean cultural heritage sites (Kim et al. 2016), a web application for the Manchu costume culture of China (Huang 2018), and a knowledge base repository for Indian classical dance (Mallik et al. 2011). Another important example, CultureSampo, used semantic technologies to aggregate cultural heritage contents from heterogeneous data sources into a semantic por-tal. ...

This case study aims to preserve and disseminate cultural heritage information about the North American community folk dance tradition of contra dance through development of a thesaurus of choreographic terms and a domain ontology. A survey of dance resources was conducted, reviewing historic and modern examples of contra dance choreography notation and instructions, records of dance events, and recordings of dance performances. Domain and content analysis were performed on the resources to collect and organize concepts and themes regarding choreographic components and their relationships, the structure and function of cultural works, their creative expressions, and the evidence of those expressions in documents and recordings. Vocabulary used in the description of contra dance choreography was identified, classified, and notated to build a thesaurus, which was used as the basis of a domain ontology. Ontology building methodology and existing conceptual models for cultural heritage domains guided the ontology development and revision phases. The study also seeks to safeguard an intangible cultural heritage by applying knowledge organization and semantic approaches to folk dance in order to model such challenges as multiple, simultaneous modes of communication and forms of representation, modular conceptual components, descriptive sequences, differing levels of structured information, and complex cultural networks found at various levels of domain discourse.
... Yiwen et al. discuss how to use AR technology to display the features of intangible cultural heritage to solve problems such as site constraints, single display forms and overly rigid display modes in current museum displays [7]. Kim et al. present an augmented reality application for providing contextual information on cultural heritage sites; this application shows the detailed content of Injeongeon [8]. Many related papers also mention the effectiveness of AR technology in nontraditional education. ...

This paper proposes a new Chinese traditional handicraft learning mode through embodied interaction using WebAR technology. It details how emergent technologies for cognitive learning can enhance learning in the teaching of a traditional handicraft. A study is presented where students learn about traditional handicrafts with a whole-body interactive simulation utilizing WebAR devices, and this is compared to traditional methods using a desktop version for the simulation. Results show that the Chinese traditional handicraft learning mode based on WebAR affords embodied interaction and improves learning between real context and virtual devices; thus WebAR devices enhance embodied interaction of traditional handicraft simulations. This contribution is highly relevant for users who aim to learn and be creative in different contexts that deliver new forms of Chinese traditional handicraft learning.

Museum Batara Guru is one of tourist attractions in the city of Palopo. the palace environment is rarely open to the public , lack of information, not optimal communication, and lack of promotion about the history of Palopo city led to the lack of tourist visits to this place. In this research, Augmented Reality (AR) as a computer-based tour guide is developed.AR development is done by modeling the object with 3D model with Unity device and marker recognition using Vuforia device. These AR applications also tested include marker and distance testing. Based on this test results obtained where the image object (heirloom) as a marker can work well. Testing based on shooting marker at a distance of 0.5 to 2 meters. Likewise with the angle of the slope, the marker can be recognized quickly if there is no change in angle when shooting, the greater the angle of the slope the more difficult to recognize the marker.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review ontologies and data models currently in use for augmented reality (AR) applications, in the cultural heritage (CH) domain, specifically in an urban environment. The aim is to see the current trends in ontologies and data models used and investigate their applications in real world scenarios. Some special cases of applications or ontologies are also discussed, as being interesting enough to merit special consideration. Design/methodology/approach A search using Google Scholar, Scopus, ScienceDirect and IEEE Xplore was done in order to find articles that describe ontologies and data models in AR CH applications. The authors identified the articles that analyze the use of ontologies and/or data models, as well as articles that were deemed to be of special interest. Findings This review found that CIDOC-CRM is the most popular ontology closely followed by Historical Context Ontology (HiCO). Also, a combination of current ontologies seems to be the most complete way to fully describe a CH object or site. A layered ontology model is suggested, which can be expanded according to the specific project. Originality/value This study provides an overview of ontologies and data models for AR CH applications in urban environments. There are several ontologies currently in use in the CH domain, with none having been universally adopted, while new ontologies or extensions to existing ones are being created, in the attempt to fully describe a CH object or site. Also, this study suggests a combination of popular ontologies in a multi-layer model.

This study surveys the state of the art in usability and user experience strategies applied to applications that deal with large amounts of data in the field of cultural heritage, highlighting the most prominent aspects and underlining the under-explored. In these applications, large amounts of data need to be wisely presented to help final users at drawing conclusions and making decisions. While sophisticated technology may be used to improve the user experience, it should not be applied to the detriment of usability, which is critical for the success of these applications. We performed a systematic mapping study to classify the literature retrieved in the four largest scientific databases by a structured search string. We classify applications according to purpose, intended users, the way they address and evaluate user experience and usability, among others, and include the analysis of combined results through maps. Findings reveal the contradiction that while most articles are intended for the education and tourism of the general public, only half of the studies evaluate usability. Moreover, there is a significant research gap in user interfaces for systems in the context of preventive conservation, for research, assessment and decision assistance. This is the first systematic mapping study combining usability and cultural heritage, especially for data-oriented applications. It shows that more research is necessary to assist conservators and researchers and to address usability from early stages of development.

Augmented Reality (AR) experiences generally function well indoors, inside buildings, where, typically, lighting conditions are stable, the scale of the environment is small and fixed, and markers can be easily placed. This is not the case for outdoor AR experiences. In this paper, we present practical solutions for an AR application that virtually restores Sheffield’s medieval castle to the Castlegate area in Sheffield city centre where it once stood. A simplified 3D model of the area, together with sensor fusion, is used to support a user alignment process and subsequent orientation tracking. Rendering realism is improved by using directional lighting matching that of the sun, a virtual ground plane and depth masking based on the same model used in the alignment stage. The depth masking ensures the castle sits correctly in front of or behind real buildings, as necessary, thus addressing the occlusion problem. The Unity game engine is used for development and the resulting app runs in real-time on recent high-spec Android mobile phones.

AR technology has been rapidly accepted in the cultural heritage domain, which requires wide context information for complete understanding as providing an enhanced experience to the user with related information of the physical world. However, currently, there are several limitations for seamless AR such as applications in outdoor environments and wearable platforms. To address this issue, we introduce our AR platform in this paper that supports the outdoor AR and wearable platform. Through the standardized metadata schema-based data retrieval, time-space correlated AR content containing the assorted context information can be provided to users. In addition, vision- and sensor-based spatial data composition technology supports stable 3D outdoor tracking. Finally, an immersive visualization provisioning module, which integrates the aforementioned component, provides a 360-degree panorama virtual reality for wearable platforms and the outdoor AR in mobile platforms. Using this platform, we expect a seamless context-aware AR service in the cultural heritage domain.

Due the proliferation of smartphones in everyday use, several different outdoor navigation systems have become available. Since these smartphones are able to connect to the Internet, the users can obtain location-based information during the navigation as well. The users could interactively get to know the specifics of a particular area (for instance, ancient cultural area, Statue Park, cemetery) with the help of thus obtained information. In this paper, we present an Augmented Reality system which uses Semantic Web technologies and is based on the interaction between the user and the smartphone. The system allows navigating through a specific area and provides information and details about the sight an interactive manner.

Nowadays, Brazil has an expected growth in the tourism sector due to the FIFA World Cup (which had a huge success) and the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. However, there is a lack of tourism applications for Brazil, such as Electronic Tourism Guides (ETGs) for mobile devices. The existence of ETGs that takes into account real world environment is still very rare. By taking into account this scenario, this article presents a ubiquitous tourism model based on augmented reality. The proposed architecture, which is called UbitourAR, takes into account the context awareness focusing on localization-based services allied with user profile and restrictions. This article describes the development of UbitourAR enabling users to interact with the real world environment using augmented reality when visiting a place or point of interest (POI). In order to evaluate the model we had taken two approaches. Firstly, we evaluated the ontology proposed using scenarios. Secondly, we evaluated the usability in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and user satisfaction. For doing that, we developed a mobile application for the Caminhos de Pedra itinerary, in Bento Gonçalves, Brazil. The proposed model extends the previous work of Ubitour by adding augmented reality. The results of the tests showed a user acceptance higher than 80%, which encourages the research in augmented reality allied with ubiquitous tourism.

Mobile devices provide an increasingly sophisticated support to enhanced experiences and understanding the remote past in an interactive way. The use of augmented reality technologies allows to develop mobile applications for indoor exploration of virtually reconstructed archaeological places. In our work we have built a virtual reconstruction of a Roman Villa with data arising from an urgent partial excavation which were performed in order to build a car parking in the historical city of Valladolid (Spain). In its current state, the archaeological site is covered by an urban garden. Localization and tracking are performed using a combination of GPS and inertial sensors of the mobile device. In this work we prove how to perform an interactive navigation around the 3D virtual model showing an interpretation of the way it was. The user experience is enhanced by answering some simple questions, performing minor tasks and puzzles which are presented with multimedia contents linked to key features of the archaeological site.

There is a vast amount of linked open data published nowadays on the web, ranging from user-generated data to government public data. This data needs visualization and exploration tools which people can use to make sense of the data and turn it into useful and used information. Several such tools have been proposed in the past, but they are designed mostly for specialists. Augmented reality has recently emerged as an interactive medium for exploring information in the real world and is well-suited for non-specialists. We propose a demo of a mobile augmented reality application that runs in the browser and consumes and displays linked open data in a friendly manner on top of the surroundings of the user.

The process of emplotment refers to the selection of significant events in a story and the identification of pertinent relations between them, in order to produce a plot providing an interpretation of those events. We are investigating how models of emplotment can be applied to develop web-based tools for creating and interpreting narratives. In particular, we are focusing on the process undertaken by art gallery professionals to design and present exhibitions. This paper presents a set of plot relations developed in collaboration with museum professionals from two national galleries in Ireland, and shows how theories of narrative and digital cultural heritage research have informed the development of an ontology and system to support the authoring of curatorial narratives.

In this paper we introduce AntarcticAR, a mobile outdoor Augmented Reality (AR) application that provides a virtual tour of Antarctica. Outdoor AR interfaces have often been used as a navigational tool, providing information related to the real world environment where the user is located in. In contrast, this research explores using outdoor AR to provide a virtual tour that has little relationship with the user's real environment. The AntarcticAR application allows people to virtually visit places of interest in Antarctica or follow historic expeditions to the South Pole. The paper describes the design and implementation of the application, and reports on a user study with members of the public. Users felt that the application provided a compelling virtual tour, and that the outdoor AR technology especially enriched the experience.

In this demonstration, we present DBpedia Mobile, a location-centric DBpedia client application for mobile de- vices consisting of a map view and a Fresnel-based Linked Data browser. The DBpedia project extracts structured information from Wikipedia and publishes this informa- tion as Linked Data on the Web. The DBpedia dataset contains information about 2.18 million things, including almost 300,000 geographic locations. DBpedia is interlinked with various other location-related datasets. Based on the current GPS position of a mobile device, DBpedia Mobile renders a map indicating nearby locations from the DBpedia dataset. Starting from this map, users can explore background information about locations and can navigate into interlinked datasets. DBpedia Mobile demonstrates that the DBpedia dataset can serve as a useful starting point to explore the Geospatial Semantic Web using a mobile device.

With ”House of Olbrich” we present an iPhone Augmented Reality (AR) app that visualizes the compelling history of Darmstadt's unique Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) quarter with video-see through Augmented Reality. We propose methods for enabling high performance computer vision algorithms to deploy sophisticated AR visuals on current generation Smartphones by outsourcing resource intensive tasks to the cloud. This allows us to apply methods on 3D feature recognition for even complex tracking situations outdoors, where lightning conditions change and tracked objects are often occluded. By taking a snapshot of the building, the user learns about the architect, design and history of the building. Historical media, like old photographs and blueprints are superimposed on the building's front, depicting the moved history of the famous House of Olbrich, which was destroyed during World War II and has been only rudimentary restored. Augmented Reality technology allows tourists to jump back in time visually by using their Smartphones: Mixing Realities emphasizes the user's experience and leads his attention to the impressive historical architecture of the Art Nouveau. In addition, we ease interaction means by superimposing snapshots. Tourists may view and read information also in a relaxed position without the need to front-up their mobiles all the time.
