Abstract

Clarifying the process of urban formation and the form of townhouses in Malacca, this paper discusses the characteristics of urban space in comparison with other Dutch colonial Cities: The research project this paper is based on was launched under the title 'Field Research on Origin, Transformation, Conversion and Conservation of Urban Space of Colonial Cities' the major target of which are the Dutch colonial cities. To compare the colonial cities of all over the world is ambitious objective of our project. With numerous historical buildings and houses, Malacca municipality with Malaysian government tries to be registered as UNESCO World Heritage. The Dutch is well known as a developer of high-dense settlements with townhouses. One of major focuses of this paper is what and how the Dutch designed the townhouse. The paper is composed by historical analysis of the process of establishment and development of Malacca and considerations on block formation and typology of townhouses. Analyzing the block formation and form of the house plan, the paper suggests the townhouses in Malacca were merely influenced by those in Netherlands and were introduced by Chinese called Baba-Nyonya.

The paper aims to discuss the distribution and its transformation of Chinese Associations in Downtown Yangon. Chinese Associations were established by overseas Chinese and serves for their communication and mutual aid. Location data of Chinese Associations obtained from the documents and the field survey is analyzed from the perspective of associations' constituent groups based on their origins, dialects and occupations. Then the patterns and the characteristics of the distribution and its transformation are considered to be closely related to the constituent group's origin, dialect and occupation.

The aim of this study is to clarify the space organization of the shophouse and the block formation in Daun Penh area, Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We analyze the space formation of the house and the housing complex on fifty-five houses, and the formation of housing lots and alleys on the thirty blocks by the field survey. We clarify three types of the shopshouse. Considering on the formation, we conclude the multi-story living in one span which can be seen on French colonial shophouse is the original one. Transformation of the shophouse makes the role of back alley important. We can grasp two housing lots types and four types of the way of utilizing the alleys.

This paper is a part of research entitled "Formation and transformation of Shophouse in the Old Town Areas, Thailand". The paper aims to clarify spatial formation and transformation of shophouse in the old Chinese quarter of Patani city, as a series of papers to discuss the formation of shophouse in Thailand. Chinese quarter in Patani is formed by the two basic road systems; roads running parallel with the river and roads running perpendicularly to the river, setting oblique gridiron pattern by eight blocks of irregular shape. According to the development of these road patterns, shophouses are built along the road-side and gradually expanded from the Chinese settlement to the present business center on the southeastern area of the quarter. The paper begins with a brief summary of Patani early history down to 5^ century but the main content is devoted to the history since 16^ century, then explicates formation and typology of shophouse in the old living quarter of Chinese immigrant, formed in the first half of 19^ century. The study aims to clarify the formation process of Patani focusing on the old Chinese settlement. It discusses the typology of shophouse and its relationship with the development and expansion of the city as well. Clarification of shophouse spatial organization and its transformation are also the main objectives of the research.
