Abstract

https://vimeo.com/199972380. This talk discusses the concept of animal welfare, and the concept of sustainability. It then presents the definitions and dimensions of thoroughbred welfare and of sustainability solicited by representatives of racing authorities, and by representatives of the thoroughbred protection movement. This interview study used photo-elicitation for part of the interview process. The author proposes a model for thoroughbred protection based on a sustainability framework that is species-inclusive. This model accommodates all dimensions of welfare emerging from the literature, and from the interviews, albeit applying a weighting consistent with the concept of sustainability based on interspecies justice. In conclusion, the use of thoroughbreds in racing is not consistent with a species-inclusive sustainability framework. The application of this framework provides a broader conceptual base for the questions that need to be addressed when arguing for or against the use of thoroughbreds in breeding and racing.
