Abstract

The basis of any positive system of freethought was Nature, as set out in such classics as the American Elihu Palmer’s Principles of Nature (1801 or 1802) or the Frenchman C. F. Volney’s The Law of Nature (1794). The political as well as ethical implications of this theory are apparent in the following extract from Thomas Davison’s edition of Volney’s work.
