of social, economic and cultural institutions, and the interaction
of all these factors. The main tasks of professional social
workers can include a variety of services such as; case
management (linking clients with agencies and programs that
will meet their psychosocial needs), counselling
(psychotherapy), human services management, social welfare
policy analysis, policy and practice development, community
organising, international, social and community development,
advocacy, teaching (in schools of social work), and social
research.
Social development is the holistic approach, whereas
community development is restricted to geographical areas like
Tribal, Rural, and Urban communities. It concentrates on
various sections of the society and target groups like
Marginalised Sections, Religious groups and issue-based
activities. Community development adopts various techniques
of social work to work with individual groups and communities.
Community organisation is one of the essential methods of
social work. It helps consistently understand community needs
and find the resources to fulfil their needs. The prime purpose of
social work towards the community is to empower various
sections of society by all means.
Role of Social Worker in Community
Development
Social work is a dynamic profession; the longitude and latitude
of the profession are vastly widened. The direct roles of social
workers begin with practising primary social work methods.
Primary methods are the participatory method with the
individual, group and community. Secondary methods are both
participatory and non-participatory to benefit society at large.
Therefore, the social worker's role is widened to better
individual, group, and community2. Social workers may play all
of these roles in different contexts and at different times in their
career; the roles are as follows:
The caseworker looks after the individual's issues to help every
problematic person holistically. Casework is about addressing
every individual's issues, who seek help from caseworkers and
solve them professionally.
Group Worker: he looks after the treatment and fulfilling the
psychosocial needs of the problematic groups of the community.
Constitutes Teams, Committees and invite delegates to fulfil
group members' psychosocial needs. He tries to develop
leadership quality; increase group members' awareness on
various issues, and educate them for sustainable development.
Community Organiser: significant role of the social worker in
community development begins with organising community on
various social issues. Initially, it is all about (Murry G. Ross
1955) bringing out the match between societal needs or
objectives and resources available to deal with those needs.
Doing so
extends and develops cooperative and collaborative attitudes
and practices in the community3. Further, community organisers
must concentrate on developing skills in the exciting profession
of the members and create political awareness. Thereby,
community members will be more strengthened and lead to
individual and community development.
Need Analyser: To fulfil the societal needs, scientific need
analysis must be undertaken, prioritising. Therefore, social
workers analyse the community's needs with the help of
community members and prioritise them. Various client groups,
NGOs s govt officials of the community take an active part in
the process of need analysis and ideas of members to be
incorporated with the proposals of needs of the community.
Project manager: Professional social workers always lead a
project or Programme sanctioned for community benefit. Social
workers have a vital role in analysing, implementing, and
managing the project. They are trained in preparing and
administrating projects, and they know every pulse of the
individual, group and community. Active participation with the
various communities' various groups can contribute
exceptionally well to community development.
Facilitator: Social workers facilitate the various benefits
provided by the govt, NGOs, international agencies like WHO,
UNICEF, WTO, UNO to the poor, socially excluded,
disadvantaged or disempowered individuals and groups and
marginalised sections of the society.
Middle manager: who help the community members to take
the services from the government; especially he is a middle
manager in arranging social security programmes, general
insurances and health insurances provided to the various
beneficiary of the society. He is the actual middle manager
between employer and employee in collective bargaining and
gets sanctions with the various benefits from an employer in the
view of labour welfare.
Counsellor: every individual of the society has a unique
character in nature, therefor individualising the people and
fulfilling their needs is the most significant task before social
workers. Meaningful and scientific interaction between social
workers and every individual of society is expected in the
preview of counselling, which is the only solution to address the
issues of community members and individuals whose behaviour
is problematic. Such effort helps to improve tolerance among
all, and it leads to community development.
Role in Grama Sabha: Grama sabha is another means of
people participation and community development. (CUD 2014)
83.55% of the respondents are aware of rural development
schemes such as; NREGP, GANGA KALYAN YOJANA, and
ASHRAYA YOJANA, higher level of education, good
economic background and interest of people appear to be the
causes of their high level of awareness4. Therefore social
workers must take active participation in Grama Sabha and be
aware

community members about facilities made for individuals and
the community. (Dhavaleshwar C U, B. C. C. 2012) An
excellent aspect of the panchayat raj institution is that it has
made provision for reservations for women in panchayat it leads
to another face of development5.
Researcher: social worker takes the scientific investigation of
social and individual issues. Every community (Tribal, Rural,
Urban) has its issues, which are significant obstacles to
development. A scientific and emotional investigation by the
social worker may help every individual groups community, and
forecasted community development may make it possible.
Conclusion
Social work education and profession have greater
responsibility in community development. Hand by hand,
support of education and field practice can contribute to the
welfare of the various sections of society. Therefore, there is a
need for well-qualified, practice-oriented, committed social
workers to improve community members' socioeconomic status
and quality of life.

... The above framework is relevant to the study, as it puts the client or person at the centre of practice with the health provider as the facilitator. The intervention starts with the person, with the healthcare provider or social worker focusing on the individual in order to properly assess the needs of that individual (Dhavaleshwar, 2016). It then moves outward to the family, community and broader society. ...
... Therefore the role the social worker is paramount in terms of assessing the need for a disability grant and referring clients to a medical doctor for medical assessments, then a referral is made to South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to apply for the grant. (Dhavaleshwar, 2016). These sorts of groups are beneficial for both survivors and families, helping to reinforce positive relationships at home, since the caregivers receive informal psycho-education on behavioural changes to expect in survivors and emotional support from people who are experiencing the same stresses and strains. ...
... It could be those participants whose applications were denied were due to a lack of resources on the part of the State. Dhavaleshwar (2016) states that one of the roles of the social worker is 'needs analyser' which involves being able to assess the needs of clients, families and communities, and actively linking people to the resources they need. A social worker can assess the need for a disability grant and refer clients to a medical doctor for medical assessment, then to SASSA to apply for a disability grant, intervening from a person centred-approach. ...

DECLARATION I declare that the work in this thesis titled "The challenges experienced by traumatic brain injury survivors with regard to family reintegration post-hospitalisation" is my original work. I declare that I have not plagiarised, all the sources of information used in this study were acknowledged. Name: Sanda Sogoni Student Signature: Date: 25 /11/2021 ABSTRACT Recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be a lengthy and challenging process for survivors, their families, and health and welfare services. Globally, South Africa has the second-highest prevalence of TBI that is due to road traffic accidents. The growing challenges for TBI survivors are the financial constraints, health implications, and the psychosocial support required by survivors of TBI and their families, which impacts family reintegration, post-hospitalisation. The aim of the study was to understand the challenges experienced by TBI survivors with regards to the psychosocial support services for family reintegration. A qualitative approach, using an exploratory-descriptive design was used. The person-centred perspective was chosen as a theoretical framework. The study setting was a selected community in the Cape Metropole in the Western Cape, South Africa. The population was TBI survivors in the selected community. Using purposive sampling, 20 TBI survivors from a non-profit organization (NPO) participated in face-to-face semi-structured individual interviews, all COVID-19 protocols were adhered to. Thematic data analysis was conducted, developing themes, subthemes. Six main themes emerged from the data analysis along with three to five subthemes under each theme. The findings indicated a number of challenges related to family reintegration for survivors and their families. Those challenges relating to financial, health, psychosocial, biopsychosocial issues, access to services and reintegration related challenges for TBI survivors post-hospitalisation. Recommendations for social welfare policy, social work practice, social work education and future research were made. ... The main aim of CSWs has been to identify the social determinants of health and support improved literacy and decision-making of vulnerable groups like women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities (Jefferys, 1965;Walt et al., 1989;Hesselink et al., 2009;Baum et al., 1997;Wadsworth, 1982;Mitchell & Shortell 2000;Banks, 2020). CSWs have successfully provided relief and improvement for primary health services of women through the following means: (i) Building databases and performing risk assessment; (ii) Directly providing or referring for counselling and therapy; (iii) Assisting in capacity building for financial inclusion of women; (iv) Collaborating with other professions for program development and policy intervention; (v) Improving social and health services through need assessment, liaising and referral; (vi) Developing community linkages and partnerships with community and government resources; and (vii) Providing education, literacy, and skill development to adult women in need (Dhavaleshwar, 2016;Gross et al., 1983;Jordan, 2000;Pawar, 2019;Weiss-Gal & Gal, 2014. ...

Many poor and illiterate women in reproductive years in Pakistan live in underdeveloped areas and are solely dependent on free primary health services provided by the state through the Lady Health Worker (LHW) Programme. These women need higher health and social literacy to make informed health decisions and receive inferior services from overburdened LHWs. This project aims to deliver a health and social literacy intervention by integrating Community Social Workers (CSWs) at the primary level to promote maternal health in the country. A 24-month intervention with six health and social literacy modules will be delivered by trained CSWs. Multistage randomized sampling will be used to sample 6 BHUs across six cities from six districts of Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 360 women will be sampled and assigned randomly to the experiment and control groups. Pakistan needs to catch up on its sustainable development goals for maternal health, not just due to the limitations of the existing services, but also due to the low health and social literacy of women, which prevents effective uptake. Each LHW is expected to have an estimated 1,500 women clients for multiple services, which makes support for women’s literacy and awareness difficult. Integrating a partner workforce or CSWs to support disadvantaged women for improved maternal health outcomes is critically needed. The results of this intervention will advise policymakers and stakeholders about long-term plans for literacy support of women and the integration of CSWs in the primary healthcare setup.
... Research on gender inequality and social capital is highly pertinent to the field of social work (Alston, 2018;Hicks, 2015;Mallinger et al., 2017;Pivoriene et al., 2016;Saraniemi et al., 2022). Understanding and resolving social injustices, fostering wellbeing, and making sure that vulnerable groups-like the elderlyget the assistance they require are at the core of social work practice (Dhavaleshwar, 2016). The goal of social workers is to improve the welfare of people and communities, with a focus on vulnerable or marginalized groups like the elderly. ...

This paper explored the dynamics of gender inequality among the elderly, particularly in the context of social capital. A cross-sectional survey is employed targeting individuals aged 60 and above in rural areas of Bangladesh. Initially, one union (Tentulia Union) in Manda Upazila was selected, followed by five wards from that union using a simple random sampling method. Subsequently, data were collected from 404 elderly individuals in the selected wards using probability proportion to size (PPS) sampling. Findings show that females are more likely to experience weaker social capital compared to their male counterparts. This gender disparity in social capital has significant implications for the well-being of elderly women. Weak social capital can lead to increased feelings of loneliness, social isolation, and a lack of access to social support, all of which are critical factors in the mental and physical health of the elderly population. Therefore, addressing gender inequality in social capital among the elderly is crucial for promoting equitable aging and enhancing the overall quality of life for the elderly.
... This has multiplier effects on agricultural products as the prices of goods and services have currently skyrocketed. Social work as a profession advocates for such disadvantaged communities by drawing federal presence into the area(Dhavaleshwar, 2016). They (Social workers) encouraged agricultural production and rural development by their continuous engagement of the government on behalf of the vulnerable/disadvantaged communities for the construction and rehabilitation of moribund rural roads(Agha et al., 2017). ...
... Community development addresses societal issues, including those related to inequality. This is achieved through targeted and focused critical awareness-raising efforts that address economic, social, and political disparities (Freire, 2020;Lynch & Forde, 2017;Pawar, 2019). In the context of community development, the process of identifying needs necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the community, the capacity to define problems and seek alternative solutions, and the design of transformative programs from the perspective of local communities (Eketone, 2006;Kickett-Tucker & Ife, 2017). ...

Non-formal education is crucial in delivering education programs based on local wisdom. Community Learning Centers (CLCs) help combat illiteracy in Indonesia with flexibility, equality, and independence principles. Before implementing the independent learning policy, non-formal education institutions had already organized programs to liberate people from limitations. The Dial Foundation assists local communities in improving their quality of life through the Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA), categorizing non-formal learning programs into three types: informational, institutional, and developmental. Community involvement in asset identification and valuation is beneficial for understanding the actual conditions of their area, which are then categorized into five capitals: human capital, natural capital, financial capital, physical capital, and social capital. This allows the community to develop short-, medium-, and long-term sustainable development strategy plans. Community learning resources come from natural resources, traditions, culture, and external sources. The learning practices implemented by the Dial Foundation support sustainable development goals, particularly in providing quality education, enhancing health literacy, protecting mountainous regions, promoting effective housing governance, ensuring local food security, improving the quality of micro-scale business production, and advancing sustainable agriculture

The article discusses the effects of metaphysics on social and community development in the eclectic contexts of Africa. The researcher sourced information through a literature review of data across many English-authored journal articles, monographs, books, and book chapters. The journal papers were accessed from diverse Google search engines such as Google Scholar, EBSCOhost, Research Gate, Web of Science, ResearchGate, Scopus, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), and Google Scholar. The findings presented the following metaphysics-related hurdles confounding social and community development: religious fanatism, faith from traditional healers in South Africa and Botswana, the unconventional practices of the white garment churches (Vapositori) of Zimbabwe and Bazezuru of Botswana, and the mythical environment embedded among the people of South Africa and Botswana. The paper concludes that people’s metaphysical beliefs influence social work development paradigms perniciously. This is because people see and interpret developmental reality from their metaphysical lenses. The paper challenges the African governments, in collaboration with other development partners, to strengthen their advocacy campaign to communities that subscribe to unconventional beliefs and ideologies so that they can undergo a paradigm shift to change their anti-developmental beliefs. The findings also widen the literature on the domain of metaphysics. Keywords: Metaphysics, African Indigenous churches, traditional healers, pandemics, mythical environments, stigma and stigmatization.
