Abstract
Type specimens of 67 taxa of Phasmida (including probable type specimens of 24 taxa) have been located in the Zoolog-
ical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg. The species are listed alphabetically, with the number of
specimens, sex and locality data.
Key words: Phasmida, type species, St. Petersburg, Bey-Bienko, Brunner, Mishchenko, Redtenbacher
Introduction
In their 1906–08 monograph on Phasmida, Brunner and Redtenbacher indicated the presence of type material
of 40 species in the Zoological Museum, Academy of Science, St. Petersburg collection. These authors also
mentioned non-type specimens of species already described by other authors. In order to clarify the position
with certain material, I visited St. Petersburg in August, 2006, to examine this neglected collection and pro-
duce a list of type material.
The collection contains about 40 drawers of older identified material, mainly collected pre-1901 from
many countries, but with an emphasis on South Asia. There are also approximately 80 drawers of recently col-
lected, undetermined material, mainly from Central and South Asia (much collected by Gorochov). After a
detailed examination of older specimens and data labels, also discussions with the present curator, Andrej
Gorochov, it has been established that many specimens were obtained from and / or identified by Brunner and
Redtenbacher, whose determination labels are attached to specimens. These are often specimens described or
mentioned in their monograph (1906–08). It is believed that many specimens were purchased from the Brun-
ner collection, after his death (Gorochov, verbal information from a previous curator). Whilst much of Brun-
ner’s collection is in the Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna (NHMW), specimens have been widely
distributed, for example by exchange (Brock, 1998), hence part of the type series is housed in depositories not
specified in the monograph. I traced a number of such specimens in St. Petersburg (see discussion for possible
origin).
Many older specimens in the St. Petersburg collection (including those described by Brunner and Redten-
bacher) originate from German sources, including natural history specimen dealers such as Hans Fruhstorfer
(1866–1922) and Ernst Heyne (1833–1905) (Asian specimens marked ‘Heyne, 901’), or expeditions by Rus-
sian entomologists. Madagascan material was almost certainly purchased from Franz Sikora (1862–63 to
1902).
Most of the definite type material i.e. mentioned in the monograph, and agreeing in measurements given,
have separate labels with numbers on (Sikora’s Madagascan material does not). In some other European col-
lections (Brock, 1998) the use of numbers linked directly with handwritten listings of species names supplied

by Brunner. Unfortunately there are no documents available to inform us. The possible type material i.e. spec-
imens not listed in the monograph as being present in St. Petersburg, mostly have numbered labels, as well as
Brunner and Redtenbacher determination labels.
Very few entomologists have examined the orthopteroid collections in St. Petersburg. The Phasmida collec-
tion is mainly as curated by Nícolaj Adelung before he retired in c. 1916. Some type material has small round
labels beneath the pins. The taxonomy is in accordance with Brunner and Redtenbacher’s monograph (1906–
08), with labelled spaces left in the collection for representatives of other genera; as a result, some drawers
contain very few specimens. The next Technical Assistant / curator, E. F. Miram, identified a few phasmids,
adding his determination labels. Subsequent curators (Mishchenko, Bey-Bienko) also identified and described
a few species of interest from Asia. Gorochov and Brock (in progress) are working on describing Heteroptery-
gidae collected by Gorochov. Type material is now denoted in the collection by red labels pinned alongside
specimens.
In order to assist phasmid researchers, this is considered an appropriate time to publish a list of type mate-
rial. Photographs of all type material will be made available on the Phasmida Species File Online (author:
Paul D. Brock) http://phasmida.orthoptera.org/, which has been checked for details of type records in other
collections.
Treatment of the species is as follows:
Primary types (holotypes, lectotypes and syntypes) and secondary type material (paralectotypes and
paratypes) are listed alphabetically by their original specific or subspecific name. The information for each
type is given in the following standard sequence:
Specific name, author, date and page reference of original publication, original genus in parentheses.
Status and sex, locality, any bionomic information, date of collection, collector (in parentheses and itali-
cized, except where a specimen is from a particular person’s collection but may not have been collected by
that person the name of the person, followed by “coll.”), reference to lectotype designation, mention of any
significant damage, brief notes on whereabouts of other type material (in all cases, if applicable).
Any further annotations. The current name followed by the current higher classification (following Otte &
Brock, 2005, except where updated online due to current thinking on two tribes) is given in square brackets
after all the other text about a taxon.
In listing the data for each specimen the name of the country, in its correct form, is given first, in capitals;
the remaining items of locality data are then listed in order of magnitude, irrespective of the order in which
they may appear on the label(s). When the country name given on the label differs from the one in current
use, the name given on the label is quoted in inverted commas, after the current name of the country of place.
The data listed for each specimen is taken from the label(s) pinned underneath the specimen. However, all
the specimens have been checked against the original descriptions to ensure that type material has been cor-
rectly interpreted. Any additional information added and marked as ’[published information]’.

Thunberg (1915) did not specify that type material was in St Petersburg, although the journal Mémoires de
l’Académie impériale des sciences de Saint-Pétersbourg implies a possible link. However, none of his type
material was found. Brock (2002) stated that all of Thunberg’s type material is lost, except for three species in
UUZM.
Discussion
The unknown factor is how so much probable type material became deposited in the St. Petersburg collection.

There are various possibilities:
1) Brunner and Redtenbacher omitted to mention St. Petersburg in their monograph. This is unlikely
because so many species are involved, but possible for a few specimens, such as those originating from
Heyne.
2) Material was purchased or exchanged at some stage. Specimens do not include the NHMW collection
numbers on the attached Brunner & Redtenbacher determination labels, hence are more likely to originate
from Brunner’s personal collection. This is arguably the most likely explanation, confirmed by comment from
a past curator, albeit verbal.
3) Prior to publication of the monograph, Redtenbacher is known to have worked on the orthopteroid col-
lection in the Zoological Museum, St. Petersburg and may have added labels.
4) As an alternative to option 3) above, Brunner and Redtenbacher may have examined material in
Vienna, sometime after 1901 (last collection dates), but before publication of the first part of the monograph
in 1906. This option is supported by numbered material, a method used in several other European museum
collections.

I would like to thank Andrej Gorochov (ZMAS) for his assistance with the collection, including history, trans-
lation of data labels in Russian and comments on the draft manuscript. Nicolas Cliquennois (Madagascar) also
kindly commented on the manuscript and provided information on Madagascan species.
