Abstract

A successful park or green spaces can contribute to the wellness of public. Park should be high-quality public spaces that provide glorious greenery and nature for people to take pleasure in the park. Therefore, the introduction of a friendly public park is significant to ensure the people received the benefits from the park. However, many types of research either in academic or non-academic not described the term of the friendly public park thus, it has shown the gap of knowledge for this concept. The aim of this paper is to develop the friendly public park benchmarking in Malaysia. The objectives of this study are: to identify the understanding of friendly public park concept from local authorities and to develop the friendly public park benchmarking according to local authorities' perspectives. An in-depth interview with the semi-structured question has used as tools to obtain the data from five respondents. The analysis shows that respondents agreed with safety (through seven attributes) and accessibility (through two attributes) as main components in friendly public park benchmarking. However, in term of features component (through two attributes), there is a various opinion that necessitates being a consideration before take in to measure the friendly public park benchmarking. The study suggests that local authorities should undertake comprehensive research in recognizing a friendly public park benchmarking to promote the sustainable development.

The potential of public parks being able to promote mental and physical health of the public is widely discussed in recent years. However, the report for public park issues becomes a norm too. One of the issues being debated is the maintenance drawback in Malaysian public parks, implicating underutilisation of the parks. To address the issue, this paper aims to examine the maintenance priority towards public park’s features and facilities in Malaysia by considering the park visitors’ expectation and demand. A questionnaire survey was distributed to the park users and visitors with 1658 valid questionnaire responses. A mean analysis was performed to rank the maintenance of park features and facilities in both visitors’ perspective and actual experience. Subsequently, Wilcoxon signed-rank test was deployed to examine the difference between visitors’ perspective and actual experience towards maintenance of the park features and facilities. The findings determine ten park features and facilities that should be prioritised in respect to their maintenance. Furthermore, it is proven that significant difference occurs between visitors’ perspective and actual experience towards all park features and facilities. As a result, the study confirms the need of improving the park maintenance process and recommends the introduction of maintenance prioritisation towards the park features and facilities.

Travel agent plays a significant role in promoting of tourism and attraction in the country. They will assist the tourists to propose, choose and organize their holiday. They also design the itinerary and provide consultation for the finest suggestion to them. Therefore, this study aims to understand the vacation packages based on the natural area around travel agents in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. The objectives of this study are: i) to identify the factor that influences nature-based tourism package by the travel agent, ii) to determine the characteristic preferred by travel agent toward nature-based tourism package. This study is using a convenient sampling method thru questionnaires as a tool to distributed concerning the travel agent that provides nature-based tourism at the study area. The result shows that most of the travel agents provided a nature-based tourism package to fulfill the demand in the nature-based tourism area. This study may encourage the travel agent to expand their service as a nature-based tourism area provider to realize the demand of their customer.

The role of neighbourhood parks is becoming more significant to visitors as a recreational place. However, some recreational facilities are far from being preferred, thus become idle and unutilised. This study determines the demands for recreational facilities from the standpoint of the visitors. Hence, the objective of this study is to evaluate the demand for recreational facilities in a neighbourhood park. This study applied quantitative approach by using questionnaire survey to obtain data from visitors at five neighbourhood parks in the Petaling District. The findings showed that most respondents preferred “slightly agree” to “agree” and “slightly satisfied” to “satisfied” in regard to the demands of active and passive recreational facilities in neighbourhood parks. It is hoped that the findings of this study offer viable information for policymakers and planners in providing recreational facilities that are conducive in neighbourhood parks.
