Abstract
A
complete
list
of
species
and
subspecies
accepted
as
members
of
the
genus
Corydoras
Lacépède,
1803,
is
given.
They
are
arranged
in
chronological
order.
Invalid
specific
names
are
followed
by
their
senior
synonym.
Nomina
nuda
are
listed
separately.
A
bibliography
covering
all
publications
containing
original
descrip-
tions
or
proposals
of
new
names
is
included.
INTRODUCTION
Important
differences
between
Gosline'
s
revision
and
our
results
are
due
to
the
much
richer
material,
including
all
available
primary
type-specimens.
These
differences
are
obvious
when
comparing
the
synonyms
accepted,
viz.:
two
species
accepted
by
Gosline,
C.
microps
and
C.
microcephalus,
we
consider
as
junior
synonyms
of
C.
aeneus
and
C.
paleatus,
respectively.
Two
nominal
species
described
prior
to
are
omit-
ted
by
Gosline,
viz.:
C.
maculatus
(proposed
as
a
nomen
novum,
now
a
junior
synonym
-
of
C.
paleatus),
and
C.
reticulata.
Gosline
put
7
species
into
synonymy,
which
we
consider
valid,
viz.:
C.
trilineatus
(in
C.
ambiacus),
C.
amphibelus
This
enumeration
of
all
species
and
subspecies
of
Cory
doras
Lacépède,
1803,
and
their
synonymy
is
the
current
result
of
a
revision
of
the
genus
Cory
doras
in
preparation.
Since
this
revision
will
be
published
in
several
parts
in
the
future,
we
believe
it
useful
to
make
the
results
of
our
studies
available
in
this
preliminary
form.
Gosline
published
the
most
recent
revision
of
the
genus
Corydoras.
He
recognized
a
total
of
valid
species
(one
not
referred
to
by
its
name,
the
fossil
C.
revelatus),
whereas
another
18
were
fully
or
doubtfully
synonymlzed.
130
(doubtfully
in
C.
armatus),
C.
agassizii
(in
C.
ambiacus),
C.
ehrhardti
(in
C.
paleatus),
C.
flaveolus
(doubtfully
in
C.
paleatus),
C.
undulatus
(in
C.
microps),
and
C.
leopardus
(in
C.
julii).
Gosline
considered
C.
nattereri
triseriatus
as
a
doubtful
synonym
of
C.
paleatus,
whereas
we
found
it
to
be
identi-
cal
with
C.
nattereri.
Gosline
included
C.
raimundi
in
the
genus
Corydoras.
Recently,
we
have
transferred
this
species
to
Aspidoras
(Nijssen
&
Isbrücker,
1976
c).
Subsequent
to
Gosline's
revision,
71
species
were
described
as
new.
Of
these
we
consider
14
as
junior
synonyms,
whereas
we
have
assigned
(1976
c)
C.
pauciradiatus
to
Aspidoras.
We
list
a
total
of
123
nominal
species
and
subspecies
of
Cory
doras
,
28
of
which
are
considered
as
junior
synonyms.
Ihus,
there
remain
95
valid
species
and
subspecies.
