Abstract

In decades, innovations are mainly to serve the consuming market of populations. India has started to promote the innovation to serve the " un-served " market. The fact that emerging countries have huge " un-served " populations and experiencing resource constraint, innovators are required to provide innovations that are extremely low in cost and able to withstand the constraints. The term frugal innovation is promoted for such innovation. In this study, the characteristics of frugal innovation are defined from market, product and business perspective. A model is proposed to merge all the characteristics and perspectives.

This paper gives a comprehensive overview of the commonly used terms jugaad, frugal innovation, frugal engineering, constraint-based innovation, Gandhian innovation, catalytic innovation, grassroots innovation, indigenous innovation, and reverse innovation. Based on that, a conceptual framework is introduced consisting of three core dimensions: sophistication, sustainability, and emerging market orientation. On the basis of these dimensions, analogies and distinctions between the terms are identified and general tendencies are explored such as the increasing importance of sustainability in social and ecological context or the growing interest of developed market firms in approaches from emerging markets. Hence, the presented framework supports further research in new paradigms for research and development (R&D) in developed market firms (DMFs), particularly in relation to emerging markets. This framework enables scholars to compare concepts from developed and emerging markets, to address studies specifically by using consistent terms, and to advance research into the concepts according their characterization.

Although the concept of frugal innovation is gaining popularity in both practitioner and academic discourse, there is no theoretically embedded definition and there exist few if any conceptual models to base future research on. We fulfil both gaps by analyzing the concept of ‘frugality’ and ‘innovation’ separately first and then jointly around two perspectives – historical and current – together which reveal a theoretically embedded definition and conceptual models of ‘frugal innovation’. We use a historical perspective to show that while the terminology is new, the core idea behind frugal innovation is not new. Subsequently however through a current perspective we show how it has gained renewed interest in both emerging countries as well as developed ones. We offer suggestions for future research along these conceptual models and layout implications to research and practice.
