LACTOBACILLUS RHAMNOSUS AS A PROBIOTIC FOR THE HEALTH OF ADULT DOGS

Authors:

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Lactobacillus rbamnosus on some health factors in dogs. In this research, 15 (three groups consisting of 5 dogs each) male dogs were fed with standard food during the research period. Group A, the control group, was given 5 ml normal saline on a daily basis. Groups B and C were given two distinct dosages of Lactobacillus rbamnosus every day for 3 weeks. Fecal quality score, body condition score, fecal microbes, appetite score, body weight, cholesterol, triglyceride and total protein in serum were examined during the study. Lite results showed that Lactobacillus rbamnosus consumption had a positive effect on both weight and appetite and led to an increase in serum triglyceride and protein along with a drop in cholesterol. There was also a significant fall in the number of fecal Clostridium perfringens, E. coli, Enterobacters and Campylobacters in the treated groups. Lactobacillus rbamnosus may have useful effects on the health of dogs if given orally and can decrease harmful intestinal bacteria.
