DOs und DONT's bei der Einrichtung immersiver Schulprogramme

Abstract

In recent years, early language learning has become increasingly popular in Germany. However, there are no uniform guidelines as to the implementation of immersion programs; consequently, school officials seeking to set up an immersion program are confronted with the difficult task to plan and implement their ideas. This paper gives an overview of important issues and strategies to consider when establishing a language immersion program. After providing a definition of the concept of immersion teaching, the article turns to important aspects of practical impementation and addresses a number of issue such as logistical considerations, choice of immersion language, teacher recruitment and parent participation. The implication is to plan comprehensively and to follow established best practices when starting an immersion program. (Language of chapter: German.)

The implementation of CLIL as an educational innovation has not yet been intensively investigated. This study aims at identifying factors which are potentially influential for the implementation in four heterogeneous primary CLIL programs. Using participant observation and Grounded Theory Methodology, the results yield a hierarchical category system comprising properties of CLIL teachers, other stakeholders, and the CLIL program. The analysis suggests that initiations by single teachers are less likely to succeed in the long run than programs carried out over a longer period involving the school as a whole. Phase-specific characteristics suggests that the commitment of the leadership, sufficient resources and their exchange, as well as CLIL-related experience are pervasive overarching aspects. For new small-scale programs, an autonomous scope of action, the commitment of other stakeholders, the general workload and additional time are crucial, as is an official status of the innovation, while in established programs, evaluation, improvement and extension become increasingly relevant. Future research needs to test these hypotheses regarding their actual predictive power for a successful innovation. (submitted)

Language learning evolves in parallel with technological advances. The use of ICT has proven to be very useful in language teaching and new studies underline the importance of computational thinking. The objective of this article is to design a pedagogical proposal in which parents, teachers and students are expected to be involved. This proposal is supposed to foster the use ICT and computational thinking as a language immersion environment outside the classroom. To do so, the software Scratch is at the very core of the proposal. In conclusion, the expected results of this design are an improvement in linguistic competence, technological skills and the family-school relationship.

In a globalized and interconnected world, language learning plays a key role. That is why the implementation of bilingual programmes is widespread nowadays. These programmes are demanding and require a solid teacher training. It is important to mention that English is the predominant language in bilingual programs in Spain. It is a well-known fact that the pronunciation of the English language is a challenge for Spanish speakers, even if their proficiency is high. This proposal consists of the creation of a six-week programme based on informal, autonomous, and collaborative learning in which teachers of foreign languages and CLIL subjects can practice the pronunciation of English vowels in virtual environments. To meet this objective self-assessment and peer-assessment will play a crucial role together with motivation.

Bilinguale Unterrichtskonzepte, die auf europäischer Ebene auch unter dem Sammelbegriff CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) zusammengefasst werden, haben in den vergangenen Jahren in den internationalen Bildungssystemen an Popularität gewonnen. Obwohl sich auch in Deutschland ein stetiger Zuwachs bilingualer Unterrichtsangebote verzeichnen lässt, weist CLIL insbesondere auf Grundschulebene mit knapp 2 % eine eher geringe Implementationsrate auf (FMKS 2014). Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht mögliche Faktoren, welche die Implementation von CLIL im Primarbereich beeinflussen (können). Leitende Fragen sind unter anderem: Welche Einflussfaktoren fördern bzw. hemmen die CLIL-Implementation an Grundschulen? Was sind mögliche Gelingensbedingungen bzw. Hindernisse? Unter welchen Bedingungen entscheiden sich Lehrkräfte für bzw. gegen eine Implementation von CLIL? Gerahmt durch ein methodenintegrierendes Forschungsdesign (Mixed Methods), finden sich in der Forschungsarbeit sowohl qualitative als auch quantitative Studien zur umfassenden Analyse förderlicher und hinderlicher Einflussfaktoren bei der Implementation von CLIL. Die qualitativen Vorstudien (Beobachtungen an Schulen, Lehrerinterviews, Telefonbefragungen mit Schulleitungen) dienten anfangs der Generierung potenzieller Einflussgrößen und Hypothesen. Die identifizierten Einflussfaktoren wurden im Anschluss in einem umfassenden Kategoriensystem zusammengefasst, um daraus ein quantitatives Messinstrument zu erstellen. Dieses wurde dann im Rahmen der quantitativen Hauptstudie (Online-Befragung) mit 307 Grundschullehrkräften eingesetzt. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen deuten darauf hin, dass die Implementation von CLIL mit zahlreichen Faktoren auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen (bildungspolitisch, organisational, personell) zusammenhängt. Zudem zeigte sich, dass zu unterschiedlichen Implementationszeitpunkten (beginnende bzw. bereits bestehende CLIL-Umsetzung) unterschiedliche Faktoren relevant bzw. einflussreich werden können. Des Weiteren deuten die Ergebnisse darauf hin, dass Lehrkräfte, die sich für eine Implementation von CLIL entscheiden, andere persönliche (individuelle) sowie kontextuelle (schulische) Voraussetzungen bzw. Bedingungen aufweisen als Lehrkräfte, die sich gegen eine Implementation entscheiden.

Dazu kommt die statistisch deutlich prosperierende Entwicklung mehrsprachiger, insbesondere aber bilingualer Angebote in vorschulischen Bildungsinstitutionen in staatlicher, kommunaler oder privater Trägerschaft. Die Realisierung von Zweisprachigkeit in Kindergärten und Grundschulen ist auch aus diesem Grund divers, ungesteuert und konzeptionell nicht standardisiert.

This volume focuses on the teaching of English as a foreign language to young learners at primary school. The volume features an introduction that covers essentials of teaching English to young learners from a theoretical, empirical, and neuroscientific perspective while also discussing the notion of a principled mindset, competence development, transcultural learning, the use of materials and literature, and lesson planning. The subsequent contributions cover reading and writing, bilingual programs, the transition from primary to secondary school, storybooks, the importance of self-selected fiction, anti-bias education, ways of encouraging young learners to speak, and professional advice for primary English language educators based on a qualitative analysis of interviews. Based on an international TEFL lecture series, researchers, teacher educators, and practising teachers from Germany, Switzerland, and the United States share their insights into these central issues and offer theoretical concepts for the professional development of (pre-service) primary school English teachers. Practical ideas and examples included in this volume aim to make theoretical constructs accessible and relatable for future teachers of English. The afterword features a look ahead by critically examining future challenges of primary school educators and highlighting (1) the great importance of an early start with English as a foreign language and (2) the need for developing national educational standards. This volume provides a research-based and practice-oriented foundation for (pre-service) English teachers wishing to expand their knowledge and gain an insight into recent developments in foreign language learning theories and concepts. Although mostly aimed at primary school educators, particularly the introductory chapter will be equally relevant for university students or teachers focusing on vocational and secondary school teaching, so that they develop an understanding of specific features of primary English language education and, as concerns secondary school teachers, can contribute to a smooth transition in the fifth grade.

In the school years 2015/2016 and 2018/2019, the authors accompanied and evaluated 21 public elementary schools in Bavaria, Germany, in a research collaboration with the Bildungspakt Bayern Foundation about bilingual (German/English) instruction in German elementary schools. The goal was to investigate how high the potential of implicit teaching and learning in a bilingual primary context is. Altogether, over 900 students, parents, and 42 teachers participated in the empirical long-term study (over 5 years) Learning in Two Languages –Bilingual Elementary School English. The findings not only show that students taught in the bilingual classes have a foreign language advantage and perform at least as well in mathematics and German as students in regular classes do, but also that they have a very positive attitude towards learning English in elementary school. These findings, the study, and its theoretical background are aimed to be portrayed in short in this chapter.

Der vorliegende Band enthält die wichtigsten Beiträge der Tagung „FFF – Fortschritte im frühen Fremdsprachenlernen“ in Weingarten im Oktober 2004. Er zieht eine Bilanz des bisher Erreichten und beschreibt den zukünftigen Handlungs- und Forschungsbedarf. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Schwerpunkte Leistungsfeststellung und Reflexion des eigenen Lernens, Imitation und bewusste Verwendung von Sprachmitteln, Spracherwerb und Sprachproduktion sowie Ausspracheschulung. Darüber hinaus finden sich weitere Beiträge zu interessanten Einzelthemen. Neben den Ausführungen zum frühen Englischunterricht enthält das Werk auch Beiträge zum Frühbeginn im Französischen. Der Band bietet allen Beteiligten am frühen Fremdsprachenlernen einen Einblick in den aktuellen Diskussionsstand um Konzepte und Inhalte des Fremdsprachenlernens an der Grundschule. Sämtliche Beiträge können auf das Lernen von weiteren Fremdsprachen an der Grundschule übertragen werden und sind von hohem Wert für Schule und Ausbildung.
