Records and checklist of Thysanoptera in Turkey

Authors:

Abstract

Thysanoptera specimens collected from different parts of Turkey, and especially from northwestern Anatolia, were studied. Data are presented on 65 species,of which 33 are from northwestern Anatolia. The species studied are either new records for the Turkish fauna or new locality records within Turkey. The following 9 species are new records for the Turkish fauna: Bregmatothrips willcocksi (Priesner),Pseudodendrothrips mori (Niwa),Cephalothrips coxalis Bagnall,Chiraplothrips graminellus Priesner,Haplothrips arenarius Priesner,Haplothrips dianthinus Priesner,Haplothrips priesnerorum Pelikan,Haplothrips rabinovitchi Priesner, and Hoplandrothrips bidens Bagnall. A checklist of Thysanoptera from Turkey that includes 193 species is presented. References of the first records of the species involved are also given.

Studies on the ysanoptera (thrips) fauna of Turkey are
relatively new. e earliest systematic faunistic report on the
Turkish ysanoptera dates back to 1934 (Bagnall, 1934).
Since then, the Turkish ysanoptera have attracted only a
few thysanopterists and, consequently, the number of the
species with a type locality in Turkey has remained rather low.
e following species are known to have their type localities
in Turkey: Haplothrips globiceps Bagnall (Bagnall, 1934);
Haplothrips bluncki Priesner (Priesner, 1951); Haplothrips
plantaginis Priesner (Priesner, 1957); Melanthrips trifasciatus
Priesner, Ropotamothrips ressli (Priesner), and Tenothrips
anatolicus (Priesner), (Priesner, 1961); Haplothrips falsarius
Priesner (Priesner, 1966); Chirothrips kurdistanus zur
Strassen (zur Strassen, 1967); Eryngyothrips discolor Bhatti
(Bhatti, 1979); Aeolothrips heinzi zur Strassen (zur Strassen,
1990); Rhipidothrips avus Tunç (Tunç, 1991a); rips
temperans zur Strassen (zur Strasen, 1996a); and Sinuothrips
hasta Collins (Collins, 2000). Major contributions in terms
of new records for Turkey were made by Blunck (1958),
Priesner (1961, 1966), Franz and Priesner (1961), Alkan
(1962), Pelikan (1969), Tuatay et al. (1972), Cengiz (1974),
zur Strassen (1963, 1967, 1968, 1975,1978, 1980, 1983, 1987,
1993, 1996b, 2000, 2003), Tunç (1976, 1985, 1988, 1989,
1990a, 1990b, 1991a, 1992a, 1992b, 1992c,), Tunç and zur
Strassen (1984), and Tunç et al. (2012a, 2012b). e Table
contains further references for the rst records of the species
in Turkey. For new locality records within Turkey, besides
those mentioned above, the following reports are worth
pointing out: those of Tunç (1991b), Kılıç and Yoldaş (2004,
2012), Atakan and Tunç (2004), Atakan and Uygur (2005),
Nas et al. (2007), Tekşam and Tunç (2009), Hazır et al. (2011),
and Özsemerci et all. (2011).
e material presented here was obtained from almost
every region of Turkey; however, the main body is from
northwestern Anatolia, which includes the southeastern
Marmara and western Black Sea regions. Little information
is available on the thrips fauna of this part of Turkey.
Blunck (1958) reported material collected in the provinces
of Bursa, Bilecik, and, to a much lesser extent, Düzce,
but the areas of those provinces that he surveyed do not
match those surveyed in the present study. Furthermore,
the provinces of Sakarya, Zonguldak, Karabük, and Bartın
were not included in that report.
A checklist for the Turkish ysanoptera is presented
with the references of the rst records of the species
included (Table). e species with type localities in
Turkey are indicated. e rst checklist of ysanoptera
in Turkey was compiled by Lodos (1993). e list also
included information on ysanoptera fauna from
several neighboring areas, e.g., Cyprus, Iran, Caucasia,
Sinai, Jordan, and Israel. However, this list is little known
because it was published as a part of a textbook of limited
distribution and therefore reached a narrow audience.
Naturally, it is also out of date.

Surveys in northwestern Anatolia were conducted
by the rst author in the following provinces (and their
districts): Bilecik (Osmaneli), Bursa (İznik), Sakarya
(Pamukova, Sapanca, Karasu), Düzce (Akçakoca),
Zonguldak (Alaplı, Ereğli, Beycuma), Bartın, and Karabük
(Safranbolu). e material was collected on 2–7 August
1992 and 9–14 August 1993.
Further material collected by the same author
originated from the following provinces: Ankara, Antalya,
Aydın, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta, Konya, and Muğla. For
the material submitted by other researchers, the collector
is stated. e methods of collection, handling, and
processing are described by Tunç et al. (2012b).
e material is deposited in the Department of Plant
Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Akdeniz University,
unless stated otherwise. e material deposited at Akdeniz
University was identied by the rst author.
Additional material, which was collected from Turkey
and deposited at the Senckenberg Research Institute
and Natural History Museum Frankfurt, Frankfurt am
Main, Germany, denoted ‘SMF’, is also included. is
material includes 6 species that are rst records for Turkey.
Additionally, collection data are presented for a further
4 species that were initially stated to occur in Turkey by
zur Strassen (2003), without any specic location. e
material that is deposited at Senckenberg was identied by
zur Strassen.
It should be noted that (2003) rst records of the
species reported by Franz and Priesner (1961), Alkan
(1962), Priesner (1964) and zur Strassen lack collection
data because of the nature of the publications in which
they were included.
Collection data are presented on a provincial basis.
Aer each hyphen (-) comes the name of the province,
district, and village or collection site as applicable.

In this study, data on 65 ysanoptera species
from Turkey are presented. Among them, 33 are from
northwestern Anatolia. Although thrips were only
collected during the summer, in August the species
composition of the thrips fauna of northwestern Anatolia
is almost similar to that of the parts of Turkey that have
already been studied. However, rips atratus Haliday and
rips fuscipennis Haliday seem to be more frequent and
abundant in northwestern Anatolia than in other parts of
the country. Frequency and abundance of T. fuscipennis is
likely to increase in northern Turkey, such as in the Black
Sea region (Tunç, 1985), whereas it cannot be traced to the
Mediterranean region and inner parts of Turkey.
Among the 65 species presented, 9 are new records for
Turkey and the rest are new locality records. New records
for Turkish fauna are Bregmatothrips willcocksi (Priesner),
Pseudodendrothrips mori (Niwa), Cephalothrips coxalis
Bagnall, Chiraplothrips graminellus Priesner, Haplothrips
arenarius Priesner, Haplothrips dianthinus Priesner,
Haplothrips priesnerorum Pelikan, Haplothrips rabinovitchi
Priesner, and Hoplandrothrips bidens Bagnall.
A total of 193 ysanoptera species have been
recorded from Turkey to date. With the addition of the
material deposited at Akdeniz University that remains
to be identied down to the species level, this number
well exceeds 200. is number is still comparatively low
considering the area and location of the country and
the rich diversity of its topography, climate, and ora.
Extensive discoveries on the ysanoptera of Turkey are
expected. is is also the case for 2 neighboring countries
in which, among all neighbors of Turkey, the highest
numbers of ysanoptera species have been recorded so
far: Bulgaria with 155 species (Karadjova and Krumov,
2013) and Iran with 201 species (Minaei, 2015).
e checklist of the Turkish ysanoptera reported by
Lodos (1993) included 154 species. However, for the reasons
specied below, the list may be considered to include less
than 140 species. First, the list includes species that are of
doubtful status, since they lack collection data. erefore,
the following species are excluded from the present
list: Aptinothrips stylifer Trybom, Chaetanaphothrips
signipennis Bagnall, Dendrothrips ornatus (Jablonowski),
Melanthrips acetosellae John, Limothrips consimilis
Priesner, Limothrips schmutzi Priesner, Tenothrips
croceicollis (Priesner) (synonym: Physothrips hispanicus
Bagnall), Apterygothrips hispanicus Bagnall, Haplothrips
simplex (Bua), Haplothrips tardus Priesner, and Liothrips
reuteri Bagnall. Second, the changes in nomenclature that
preceded or followed the publication of the list were not
reected. Consequently, some species were listed twice
with the inclusion of their synonyms, e.g., Aeolothrips
tenuicornis Bagnall with clavicornis Bagnall, Aeolothrips
collaris Priesner with meridionalis Priesner, rips avus
Schrank with obscuricornis Priesner, rips major Uzel
with phytolaccae Priesner, and Neoheegeria dalmatica
776
TUNÇ and HASTENPFLUG-VESMANIS / Turk J Zool
Schmutz with Neoheegeria hamanni Priesner. e latter is
one of the examples of the changes in nomenclature that
succeeded the disclosure of the list (Minaei et al., 2007).
On the other hand, the status of Retithrips syriacus
(Mayet), which was included in the list of Lodos (1993), is
disputable. Data on its presence in Turkey were presented
only by Doğanlar and Yiğit (2002). erefore, the latter
should be considered to have recorded this species for the
rst time in Turkey.
e species that were reported as crop pests in Turkey
without supporting data, e.g., rips avus Schrank,
Hercinothrips femoralis (O.M. Reuter), and Liothrips oleae
(Costa) (Alkan, 1962; Lodos, 1993), could not yet be
traced in Turkey. Alkan (1962) stated that some species (it
was not clear which species) that he had listed had been
conrmed by the British Museum of Natural History.
erefore, these 3 species were retained in the checklist, as
they may be among those conrmed then.
Agrostothrips meridionalis (Bagnall) (syn: Chirothrips
meridionalis Bagnall) was erroneously stated as Chirothrips
aculeatus Bagnall (Tunç et al., 2012a). C. aculeatus has thus
far been recorded only in the Manavgat district (locations:
Bekirler and Bucakşeyhler) of Antalya Province in Turkey
(Tunç, 1992a).
Most studies on the ysanoptera fauna of Turkey
have so far been undertaken in the western part of the
country. Nevertheless, many specimens from the eastern
part, which were collected incidentally, are deposited
at Akdeniz University and most of them have been
disclosed, including in the present study. It is obvious that
systematical collections in multiple seasons are needed
in order to obtain a better picture of the thrips fauna in
the eastern part of Turkey and to pave the way for new
discoveries.

HIGHLIGHTS • This research employs MOLE-BLAST to build a tree for Tenothrips species, focusing on COI / 18S genes. • MOLE-BLAST aids in identifying closely related sequences for phylogenetic analysis. • This study improves our grasp of Tenothrips species' phylogeny, offering future research insights. Abstract The search for the neighboring sequence of the query for the construction of the phylogenetic tree above led to the use of MOLE-BLAST. The construction of the phylogenetic tree was demonstrated using Tenothrips species from Muğla, Konya and Antalya in 2023. The Tenothrips species were found to show some degree of relationships based on the tree diagram in all regions. The study aimed to draw the phylogenetic tree of Tenothrips species using MOLE-BLAST, a computational tool widely used for phylogenetic analysis by COI and 18S Ribosomal RNA gene regions.

Aim of study: The seasonal distributions of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and the onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), as well as their primary predators, predatory bugs, Orius spp (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), in the polyculture agricultural area were investigated in order to gain a thorough understanding of the prey-predator relationships on various crop plants. Area of study: Adana Province, located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Region of Türkiye. Materials and methods: Thrips and predatory insects were collected from various plants using the tapping method during 2019-2020. Their diversity, seasonal densities, and distributions were investigated. Main results: A total of 11 predator species were identified, with Orius laevigatus (Fieber) and Orius niger (Wolff) being the most prevalent species. The greatest diversity of predatory insect species was found among plant species from the Fabaceae family. With the exception of field crops, T. tabaci was found to be the most frequent thrips species in the examined cultivated plants when compared to F. occidentalis on common crop plants. Among winter vegetables, a significant number of predators, primarily O. laevigatus, were only collected from broad bean plants. The abundance patterns of thrips and predatory insects were closely associated with the flowering phenology of plants. Research highlights: Strong relationships were observed between Orius spp. and T. tabaci adults. This study suggests that broad beans, a winter crop, could be included in crop rotations during the autumn-to-early spring period to support the populations of predatory insects in various ways.

Compsothrips reticulates Guo & Feng, 2006 (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae: Idolothripinae), which is a spore-feeding thrips, was recorded for the first time on thedecayed almond fruits, where it had remained on the tree from the previous year in 2023 in the location Besni, Adıyaman Province, Türkiye. With this record, two species of this genushave been included in the Turkish Thysanoptera fauna. Both male and female adult individuals of this species were found. The distinctive features that differentiate this speciesfrom the previously recorded Compsothrips albisignatus (Reuter, 1884) are that it has onlyone sense cone on the third antenna segment, and the antenna of adult individuals are reticulated. The taxonomic features of both female and male individuals are given in detail.

This study was conducted to identify thrips (Insecta: Thysanoptera) species in the Balcalı area of Adana Province, Türkiye, known as a polyculture area having diverse topographic features. Thrips were extensively collected by the tapping method from awide range of agricultural crop plants during 2019-2020. A total of 1150 adult thrips individuals were collected, representing 24 identified species. Among them, the most prevalent and abundant species were the cotton thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman and the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). These two species showed varying population dynamics based on the flowering patterns of the plants sampled. Thankfully, no thrips damage was observed on the sampled plants. Although invasive pest thrips species such asThrips hawaiiensis (Morgan) and Scirtothrips dorsalis (Hood) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) were found in low numbers, and both of them were collected mostly from flowers of sesame and green pepper plants. A low number of predatory thrips belonging to geniuses, Aeolothrips (Aeolothripidae) and Scolothrips (Thripidae) were detected on beans, potatoes and cotton after March.
Chapter
The rapidly increasing world population creates more need for shelter, transportation, energy, and nutrition, leading to the construction of new settlements and agricultural areas, making habitats fragmented, endangering many species and a significant portion of local populations. Biodiversity is adversely affected by the deterioration of the functioning, and the integrity of habitat ecosystems. Insects, which constitute an important part of the animal kingdom, and exist all over the globe, affect human life both directly and indirectly, and are an indispensable part of the food chain; yet insect diversity is also under serious threat. Anatolia is a land where rich habitat and climate diversity are observed, being as rich as the whole of continental Europe in terms of plant and insect diversity on its own. In this review, the origins of, and the contributing factors to, insect diversity in Turkey is examined through data on a few specific insect groups that dwell steppe, aquatic, cave, and mountainous regions.

This study was conducted to determine Thysanoptera species associated with nectarines and their damage on the fruits in Adana and Mersin provinces of Türkiye in 2005 and 2006. In the study, thrips species feed on nectarine and weed flowers and their population dynamics were found out. A total of 12 thrips species in the nectarine flowers were determined. These species were Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande, 1895), Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom, 1895), Thrips tabaci Lindeman, 1889, Thrips meridionalis (Priesner, 1926), Thrips major Uzel, 1895, Thrips minutissimus Linnaeus, 1758, Thrips angusticeps Uzel, 1895, Isoneurothrips australis Bagnal, 1915, Melanthrips sp., Melanthrips pallidior Priesner, 1919, Tenothrips frici (Uzel, 1895) and Tenothrips discolor (Karny, 1907). Among the identified thrips species, F. occidentalis, T. tabaci, T. meridionalis, I. australis and T. major were more common. T. tabaci and F. occidentalis were more prevailing thrips species on the weeds sampled. Thrips adults infested the flowers at the beginning of the flowering period but the larval thrips appeared at the petal fall. Thrips feedings on ovary tissue caused brown blemishes-scars on fruit and feedings on mature fruit caused whitish skin patches called silvering. The orchard in Alifakili (Mersin) district having the highest number of adult and larval thrips in the flowers had the highest ratio of damaged fruits (60,1% and 73,8% in 2005 and 2006, respectively) at the harvest while Hadirli orchard with the lowest infestations of the total thrips in flowers had the lowest ratio of damaged fruits (17,7% and 15,6% in 2005 and 2006 respectively). According to the datas obtained from the study, a positive correlation between the total number of thrips in flowers and the ratio of damaged fruits due to thrips attacks may be mentioned but further research and statistical analysis are required to establish a correlation.

In this study, insect pests of fresh onion cultivated areas of Izmir province have been determined. For this purpose, 155 onion fields have been observed in Bayíndír, Çeşme, Kemalpaşa, Menemen, Tire and Torbalí districts in 2006, periodically. In the following years, 164 onion fields have been observed in Bayíndír, Bornova, Menemen and Tire in 2007-2008. Six families, seven species and four genera from Hemiptera, seven species from Thripidae, two species from Phlaeothripidae and four species from Aeolothripidae of Thysanoptera have been found throughout the study. Two families, six species from Coleoptera and one species from Neuroptera order have been determined. In addition, one species and the species from 10 families of Diptera (Chloropidae, Chironomidae, Drosophilidae, Empididae, Mycetophilidae, Muscidae, Phoridae, Psichodidae, Sepsidaea, Sciaridae) have been found. As a result of study, Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and Bactericera tremblayi Wagner (Hemiptera: Triozidae) have been considered as the key pest and the second major pest, respectively. The most important species among dipterans has been determined as Delia platura Meigen of Anthomyiidae. Aeolothrips intermedius Bagnall (Thysanoptera: Aeolothripidae) has been determined as the most abundant natural enemy. Orius spp. (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), Nabis spp. (Hemiptera: Nabidae), Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Chrysoperla carnea Steph. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) were determined rarely as natural enemies. In the study abundance of the natural enemies were found rarely because of intensive and non specific uses of pesticides.

Hawaiian flower thrips, Thrips hawaiiensis (Morgan, 1913) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is the first time reported from Mersin province in Turkey, on lemons in 2015. T. hawaiiensis caused silvery spots on young fruits and dissertations of the fruits, and also silvered plant tissue on nectarine fruits. Its typical damage on lemon fruits was widely observed in “Yediveren” limon group, which they are flowering throughout a year in the region. After its first detection, it quickly spread over the south eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. Additionally, this thrips was recorded on some vegetables, ornamentals and field crop plants such as cotton, sunflower, maize and sesame. Brief information about morphology, biology, economic importance and distribution of this pest thrips are also given

This study investigated the species composition of Thysanoptera and the within-plant distribution, abundance and relation to plant phenology of major species on Round Seedless grapes (Vitis vinifera L. var. Sultana) in the Manisa Province, Turkey in 2003-2005. Monthly surveys were conducted in 41 vineyards in 11 districts of the province starting with bud burst (early April) and ending with complete defoliation (late November). Thrips were collected by beating plants in the field or by examining plant samples in the laboratory. A total of 35 Thysanoptera species was recorded. The most common and abundant species were (in descending order): Rubiothrips vitis (Priesner, 1933), Thrips tabaci (Lindeman, 1889), Mycterothrips albidicornis (Knechtel, 1923) + M. tschirkunae (Jachontov, 1961), Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande, 1895) and Drepanothrips reuteri Uzel, 1895 (Thripidae). All major species were present in varying numbers from shoot growth to post-harvest. The highest thrips densities were attained during bud burst and early shoot growth, when R. vitis was the only species detected. Thereafter, R. vitis number declined sharply. Other major species, with the exception of T. tabaci, tended to increase before fruit ripening and/or afterwards. The most abundant species on different parts of the grapevines were as follows: T. tabaci, D. reuteri and R. vitis on leaves and shoots; T. tabaci, D. reuteri and F. occidentalis in flowers and D. reuteri in bunches. R. vitis has the highest potential to pose a threat to seedless grapes. The abundance of F. occidentalis is low; therefore, the incidence of scars or spots on berries attributed to it and quarantine problems stemming from its presence in exported table grapes are expected to be minimal.
