Baptists Responding to Cultural Diversity

Abstract

This chapter draws from the 2011 National Census and the 2011 National Church Life Survey. A randomly selected, representative group of Baptist attenders provides an insight into individuals’ views about cultural diversity. In addition, participating Baptist churches describe their activities. The study explores the views of individual attenders of Baptist churches to migration, how Baptist churches are involved in ministry to migrants, and the scope to which local Baptist churches engage and assist churches comprised of those from non-English-speaking backgrounds. It is clear from the results that Baptist attenders and churches are grappling with the issues and the opportunities brought by increased migration and greater cultural diversity. It is hoped this will give Baptist denominational staff, consultants, pastors, and other church leaders the opportunity to celebrate successes and identify areas for increased multicultural engagement.
