STUDI KASUS IMPLEMENTASI SLiMS SEBAGAI OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE DI PERPUSTAKAAN CHANDRA WIDODO
Abstract
Perpustakaan berlomba-Iomba melakukan implementasi teknologi informasi dalam rangka usaha peningkatan layanan perpustakaan. Begitu juga Perpustakaan Chandra Widodo yang melakukan modernisasi dengan mengimplementasikan perangkat lunak berbasis sumber terbuka (open source software/OSS). Open source software yang dipilih adalah SLiMS (Senayan Library Management System). Penelitian ini membahas tentang bagaimana implementasi SLiMS sebagai open source software di Perpustakaan Chandra Widodo. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Hasll penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa, dengan segala kelebihan dan kekurangannya, untuk saat ini SLiMS telah mampu memenuhi kebutuhan Perpustakaan Chandra Widodo. Akan tetapi, implementasi SLiMS di Perpustakaan Chandra Widodo menghadapi tantangan untuk mencapai harapan mereka kedepannya.
The objectives to be achieved from this research are to identify obstacles, improve the role of library managers and the Library Management system, and find out the strengths and weaknesses of SLiMS. This research method uses a qualitative approach. using data collection techniques through interviews, observation and documentation. The informant in this research was the Lhokseumawe State Polytechnic UPT librarian who the researcher had selected according to the research subject criteria. As a result of this research, it can be said that the understanding of Lhokseumawe State Polytechnic UPT librarians regarding the use of SLiMS can be said to be understood by librarians regarding the use of SLiMS. However, managers can operate the software even with limited capabilities. The obstacle to using SLiMS at the UPT of the Lhokseumawe State Polytechnic Library is understanding the technology because they are not used to it and it also comes from human resources (human resources). The task of library managers is to recruit effective human resources and effective career development. Advantages and Disadvantages of SLiMS 7. One of its advantages is that it makes the work of librarians easier and faster in each service. The disadvantage is that if the light goes out, the system cannot be used manually and the software must be able to use a stable network so that it can be used.
Digital preservation activities among law libraries have largely been limited by a lack of funding, staffing and expertise. Most law school libraries that have already implemented an Institutional Repository (IR) chose proprietary platforms because they are easy to set up, customize, and maintain with the technical and development support they provide. The Texas Tech University School of Law Digital Repository is one of the few law school repositories in the nation that is built on the DSpace open source platform.(1) The repository is the law school's first institutional repository in history. It was designed to collect, preserve, share and promote the law school's digital materials, including research and scholarship of the law faculty and students, institutional history, and law-related resources. In addition, the repository also serves as a dark archive to house internal records.
This article discusses best practices for evaluating open source software for use in library projects, based on the authors' experience evaluating electronic publishing solutions. First, it presents a brief review of the literature, emphasizing the need to evaluate open source solutions carefully in order to minimize Total Cost of Ownership. Next, it describes the process used to conduct a comparative evaluation between two open source electronic publishing systems, highlighting aspects of the methodology not described elsewhere. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of reporting the results of an evaluation to decision-makers.
Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of open source to a non‐technical audience and give an overview of its current and potential applications in libraries.
Design/methodology/approach
– The paper is based on a literature review.
Findings
– Open source already aids libraries and has great potential but is hobbled by its intrinsically technical appeal.
Originality/value
– The paper makes observations about information technology trends which might affect the take up of open source and introduces open source comprehensively but succinctly.
