This book examines the social impact of intellectual property laws. It addresses issues and trends relating to health, food security, education, new technologies, preservation of bio-cultural heritage and contemporary challenges in promoting the arts. It explores how intellectual property frameworks could be better calibrated to meet socio-economic needs in countries at different stages of development, with local contexts and culture in mind. A resource for policy-makers, stakeholders, non-profits and students, this volume furthermore highlights alternative modes of innovation that are emerging to address such diverse challenges as neglected or resurgent diseases in developing countries and the harnessing of creative possibilities on the Internet. The collected essays emphasize not only fair access by individuals and communities to intellectual property – protected material, whether a cure, a crop variety, clean technology, a textbook or a tune – but also the enhancement of their own capabilities in cultural participation and innovation.

Andrew Feenberg has proposed a green democratic theory that aligns with his philosophy of technology. His calls move in the direction of the thought of Robyn Eckersley and John Dryzek, who, also both inspired by Frankfurt School Critical Theory, develop a critical political ecology. In this chapter, I outline Feenberg’s position and suggest that his views would be complimented and productively expanded by integrating insights, among others, from Eckersley and Dryzek, that focus particularly on the global dimensions of the environmental thematic and the need, in this context, to develop a theory of democracy for the global technological and ecological risks. Given the transnational influence of technologies, any green democratic theory meant to address technological issues must be global in reach. What is needed are multidimensional, multilevel efforts that aim at positively affecting state and regional and transnational governmental bodies as well as work in transnational civil society, also even aimed at business, that create the cultural conditions for positive government and responsible individual decision making.

Both neuroimaging and cognitive assessments play a valuable role in early clinical trials, and are important components of the modern CNS drug developer's toolkit. This chapter reviews some of the major neuroimaging techniques and cognitive assessments showing utility in early drug development studies, including fMRI, structural MRI, PET imaging (FDG, amyloid binding, and microdosing studies), EEG, pharmaco-EEG, the MATRICS cognitive test battery for schizophrenia, and several important computerized cognitive test batteries.

This study reviews the existing evidence on the effects of tax reforms on output levels and growth over the short and long run from different strands of the literature. It develops and applies criteria to evaluate the usefulness of ex-post estimates to predict the effects of tax reforms ex ante. Based on these criteria, we present detailed tables summarizing and comparing ex-post estimates of the effects of tax reforms. Overall, our review suggests that at least the direction of the short-run and long-run growth effects can be predicted with a reasonable degree of certainty, but there is disagreement with respect to the magnitude. Our review also suggests that depending on the tax change, trade-offs between short-run stabilization and long-run growth may arise and that more research on this question is needed.
