_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT This work aims to discuss the Compassion Fatigue. Compassion Fatigue is a term to explain a process in which the professionals linked to care for clients that have suffer as a demand turn into fatigued and exhausted (physically and mentally) due to continuous contact with the stress provoked by the compassion. From dualistic human nature presupposition, we analyze biologic and physiologic, historical and cultural aspects as well, involved in compassion experience. Starting from this point, we propose a dualist conception of empathy and compassion, what results in a redefinition of Compassion Fatigue. The literature review showed a conceptual confusion, and the reflex of this in the instruments development. The work suggests a new distinction between Compassion Fatigue and the others concepts, and presents the validation to Portuguese of ProQol-IV, as much as interview passages that illustrate the phenomenon dynamic.

... Among the organizational aspects that have generated illness and psychological distress, the following are included: low work control, high physical and psychological demand, poor content, and rigid and authoritarian hierarchical relationships (Grant, Lavery, & Decarlo, 2019;NSPCC, 2013;Turgoose, 2015). Among the negative consequences for professionals serving vulnerable populations, burnout, or chronic fatigue syndrome has been identified (Lago, 2008;Turgoose, 2015). The constant contact with complex demands involving different types of violence (e.g., structural, physical, psychological) can also lead professionals to perceive themselves as vulnerable, also to become victims, causing a gradual loss of the feeling of control over their environment, as well as a decrease in their esteem and trust in others (Lago, 2008;Turgoose, 2015). ...

Humanitarian work has proven to be dangerous over the years, causing, over time, emotional or physical trauma in many professionals who deal with natural disasters that have affected large nations. These professionals need to be able to deal flexibly and adapt quickly to the reality of the current context, running the risk of developing symptoms of depression, PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and compassion fatigue, a syndrome of biological, psychological and emotional exhaustion. social aspects, a very important indicator, studied in health professionals, considered the greatest threat to the mental health of professionals, especially those ones who work directly with trauma and victims. Health professionals, in direct contact with people who are suffering, at risk of death, or in a situation of pain, can lead them to a secondary model of prolonged stress, called Compassion Fatigue, which can be labeled as “ Cost of caring”, or “Emotional pain”. In view of this, the present work aims to present an investigation on mental health indicators in health professionals who work in humanitarian actions. A cross-sectional, descriptive exploratory research was carried out using the chain reference sampling technique or the snowball technique. The study was conducted online through the Google Forms survey management application. The results show that these professionals receive more support from the family than leadership, colleagues and friends, and the younger the professional's age, the higher the compassion fatigue index.

Specifically, in studies concerning care professionals, Professional Quality of Life (PQL) refers to how much the individual feels good by helping to diminish the suffering of others. This sensation results in the psychological balance between the job's positive (Compassion Satisfaction) and negative (Compassion Fatigue) experiences. The objective of this research is to evaluate the professional quality of life of a sample of health care professionals that work in public hospitals in João Pessoa and Campina Grande (PB). We used as instruments: the Professional Quality of Life Scale - ProQOL - IV (validated in a local study) and a Socio-Demographic Questionnaire. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program, from which we obtained descriptive statistics (average, percentage, and standard deviation), and cluster analysis. Results identified three PQL profiles: Balanced, Deficient, and Moderate. The first and last profiles have their PQL preserved; in contrast, the Deficient profile group stood out as the most worrisome, since it was the only one to present evidence of Compassion Fatigue, probably due to their excessive workload. Since Compassion Satisfaction was dominant in every group, and Compassion Fatigue affected only 25 percent of the sample, we can conclude that most health care professionals have a good professional quality of life, and this quality is sustained by the pleasure of feeling socially useful when saving lives.

In the field of health, empathy is defined as an attribute with cognitive and emotional dimensions that enables an understanding of inner experience and a perspective of the patient as a unique individual, plus the ability to communicate this understanding to the patient. The role of empathy is to identify and understand the patient's feelings, thus promoting an increase in trust, loyalty and respect between doctor and patient. Therefore, the following study was aimed at evaluating the empathy 3rd to 5th year medical residents from the Federal University of São Paulo to verify any possible differences between the empathy of physicians and surgeons and their relationship with the professional profile.

No

The great controversy about helping-induced trauma is not “Can it happen?” but “What shall we call it?” After reviewing nearly 200 references from PILOTS, Psychlit, Medline, and Social Sciences In dex, it is apparent that there is no routinely used term to designate exposure to another’s traumatic material by virtue of one’s role as a helper. Four terms are most common: “compassion fatigue” (CF); “countertransference” (CT); “secondary traumatic stress” (STS); and “vicarious traumatization” (VT). Work-related secondary traumatic stress.
