Abstract

Large-scale and long-term research programmes - essential to determine changes in habitats or climate - are not feasible these days in the face of financial and personnel cuts. The involvement of laymen in scientific studies provides a way to circumvent such restrictions and makes it possible, in addition, to collect local and anecdotal information, as well as to improve interaction between scientists and the public. The possibility of involving (outdoor) sportsmen and -women is an especially promising option in this context. Laymen can be employed for smaller tasks with a focus in public relations and education, but also for serious scientific research. This approach harbours great potential for future research and monitoring programmes.
