The UK Business Creation Process: The 2013 Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics Pretest

The UK PSED pretest was designed to illustrate the types of information that could be developed in a large scale effort, determine the operational feasibility of the data collection paradigm, establish the cost estimates associated with data collection, and provide an example of the benefits of implementing the project. A small amount of funds were assembled to gather initial year data from nascent entrepreneurs identified in the 2013 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) interviews and a 12 month follow-up with nascent entrepreneurs identified in the 2012 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) interviews. A total of 201 interviews were completed. Of these, 90 were one year follow-ups with those identified as nascent entrepreneurs in the GEM interviews during the 2012 cycle and 111 were initial year interviews completed about 2 months after nascent entrepreneurs were identified in the GEM interviews during the 2013 cycle. the report summaries selected results from this effort. The complete questionnaire is provided in the appendix.

Defining craft entrepreneurship has been a challenge for many scholars and researchers in different countries. Not only because of the multidimensional nature of entrepreneurship, but also because of the differences in national regulations setting boundaries for each sector of the economy. Thus, in some countries, craft is a part of the Creative Industries, but in others it is considered as an independent sector of the economy. Understanding what craft is and how craft products can be differentiated and defined has also been a daunting task. Thus, consolidating theoretical knowledge on entrepreneurship and craft entrepreneurship gained from the literature with the results of an empirical study carried out among craft entrepreneurs and consumers of craft products, this study aims to conceptualize craft entrepreneurship and to develop propositions for the definition of craft entrepreneurship by integrating the meaning attributed to craft entrepreneurship and its specifics by craft entrepreneurs with the perception and meaning assigned to craft products and services by consumers. This study applies qualitative methodology and data gathered using semi-structured interviews and open-ended survey questions. 20 craft entrepreneurs represent a perspective of entrepreneurs about entrepreneurship and its specifics in the craft sector, whereas 445 consumers reflect the opinion of the general public about craft and craft-related products. The results of the study indicate that craft entrepreneurship is undoubtedly connected to handmade products, national traditions, small ventures and craft markets and fairs, where craft entrepreneurs commercialize their produce. Although numerous scholars have already attempted to conceptualize craft entrepreneurship theoretically, the contribution of this study is in its integrated application of theoretical and empirical data reflecting the perspectives of entrepreneurs and consumers.

s To understand the context for firms being created in the manufacturing space we explore the factors affecting performance by applying Gartners' (2004) overarching theoretical framework. We investigate the phenomenon of nascent entrepreneurship from a multi-stage perspective answering calls to provide studies that are more explicit about the timing of the performance in particular contexts. Our research shows that a college degree is helpful in receiving funding, and start-up experience has a slightly negative impact on defining the market, which highlights the interactions between individuals and process and casts new insights into the context of nascent entrepreneurship in the manufacturing industry.

This article examines the topicality of ethno-costumes in the context of the modern theatrical process. The aim of the study is to conduct a theoretical and methodological study of the problems of ethno-costumeology in the context of the modern theatrical process. The scientific and theoretical methodology of the research include the theoretical foundations of ethno-costumes, concepts of the modern theatrical process, methodological aspects of ethno-costumes, innovative directions of ethno-costumes, artistic principles of creating an ethnocostume. Scientific and theoretical methods were used: socio-cultural, historical, semiotic, ethnographic, formal-stylistic analysis, ekphrasis, attribution of an ethnic costume, observation, interpretation of an ethnic costume in the theatrical process. The practical methods: research of innovative technologies in the design of ethnic costume in the context of the modern theatrical process, which make up various types of 3D modelling and visualization. The result of the study is: the application of the obtained scientifically grounded methodological foundations in the method of designing an ethnic costume in the production process of the Kazakh Drama Theater named after S. Seifullin in the city of Karaganda. The significance of the results is in the study and identification of methodological aspects in innovative areas of ethno-costumology within the framework of the modern theatrical process.

Entrepreneurship is now considered to be an urgent solution for handling large pools of young graduates around the world. These crucial situations where universities are creating an excess number of graduates as compared to jobs availability increase the pressure on graduates as well as policy makers and educators. Entrepreneurship in this case does not only handle the burden of the unemployed among the youth but also positively improves the economic development of the country’s economy. In becoming entrepreneurs, graduates do not only create jobs for themselves but for other as well and play a vital role in the development of the economy. This paper explains gender-based entrepreneurship intentions amongst students of Russia and China (3 universities in China, 3 in Russia). A questionnaire was developed to find the impact of different behavior factors on male and female students of Russia and China. In terms of methodology, the quantitative technique was used to collect the data. The entrepreneurial spirit is explained after analyzing the data from three universities in each country. The six universities numbering 468 student respondents were analyzed through Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. To find out the association amongst different variables, multiple regression and correlation technique were used. The results also show an association of gender with entrepreneurship in students in both countries. However, in case of Russia male respondents showed higher intention than female respondents. To maintain the same role of male and female members in the society, development suggestions for educators and policy makers are presented.

Over 100 million of the 1.8 billion midlife adults living on less than $15 a day are attempting to create new firms. Another 110 million are managing new ventures. This is almost half of the global total of 450 million individuals involved with 350 million start-ups and new ventures. They are responsible for almost half of all new firms and one-third of new firm jobs. For the poor, business creation provides more social and personal benefits than illegal and dangerous migration, criminal endeavors, or terrorism. Almost all of the business creation by the bottom billions occurs in developing countries, half are in Asia. The ventures initiated by the bottom billion are a significant proportion of all firms expecting growth, exports, an impact on their markets, and in high tech sectors. Assessments based on multi-level modeling suggest that young adults, whether they are rich or poor, in countries with access to informal financing and an emphasis on traditional, rather than secular-rational, and self-expressive values are more likely to identify business opportunities and feel confident about their capacity to implement a new firm. Such entrepreneurial readiness is, in turn, associated with more business creation. Compared to the strong associations of informal institutions with business creation, formal institutions have very modest and idiosyncratic relationships. Expansion of access to secondary education and early stage financing may be the most effective routes to more firm creation among the bottom billion.

In the past 15 years, two international observatories have been intensively studying entrepreneurship using empirical studies with different methodologies: Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED). Both projects have generated a considerable volume of scientific production, and their intellectual structures are worth analyzing. The current work is an exploratory study of the knowledge base of the articles generated by each of these two observatories and published in prestigious journals. The main difference found is that the predominant theoretical frameworks used are the economic approach and institutional theory in GEM, and the demographic and cognitive approaches in PSED. The value added of this work lies in its novel characterization of the intellectual structure of entrepreneurship according to the academic production of these two initiatives. The results may be of interest to the managers and members of these observatories, as well as to academics, researchers, sponsors and policymakers interested in entrepreneurship.

The Comprehensive Australian Study of Entrepreneurial Emergence (CAUSEE) is a research programme that aims to uncover the factors that initiate, hinder and facilitate the process of emergence of new economic activities and organizations. It is widely acknowledged that entrepreneurship is one of the most important forces shaping changes in a country’s economic landscape (Baumol 1968; Birch 1987; Acs 1999). An understanding of the process by which new economic activity and business entities emerge is vital (Gartner 1993; Sarasvathy 2001). An important development in the study of ‘nascent entrepreneurs’ and ‘firms in gestation’ was the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED) (Gartner et al. 2004) and its extensions in Argentina, Canada, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Yet while PSED I is an important first step towards systematically studying new venture emergence, it represents just the beginning of a stream of nascent venture studies – most notably PSED II is currently being undertaken in the US (2005– 10) (Reynolds and Curtin 2008).

This handbook reports on the creation andresults of the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED) that wasconducted by the Entrepreneurship Research Consortium (ERC), founded in 1995.The PSED was created to develop a representative portrait of entrepreneurialactivity in the United States.A panel of nascent entrepreneurs wascreated, along with a control group of non-entrepreneurs. Individuals in theprocess of creating new businesses could be studied to generate systematic,reliable, and generalizable data on business creation. The handbook reports on the creation of the ERC, provides detailedinformation about the rationale used in developing the questionnaires for thePSED, and summarizes the theoretical perspectives operationalized, andvariables used, in the PSED. The PSED model has three "transitionpoints": (1) the "conception," (2) the startup process, and (3)"outcomes" of the new firm. These points generate various researchquestions: "What are the tendencies and features of those who startbusinesses?" "How do nascent entrepreneurs go about forming abusiness?" "Why are some successful?" and "Why are some firmslikely to succeed, persist, or die?" The research design had two majorparts: (1) identifying and interviewing nascent entrepreneurs and a controlgroup, and (2) the content of the interviews. Each of the 38 chapters in the handbook was written by a scholar in the ERCwho reports on a key theoretical perspective and variables associated with thattheory. The results showed the great diversity and variety in the process ofbusiness creation. Chapters in Part I, "Demographic Characteristics of theEntrepreneur," discuss the theory, measures, and evidence about thedemographic characteristics of both nascent entrepreneurs and the comparisongroup. Aspects discussed include age and other demographics, income and networth, work and education background, and family background. Part II, "Cognitive Characteristics of the Entrepreneur," surveysthe cognitive characteristics that might determine whether nascententrepreneurs think differently than the comparison group and how types ofnascent entrepreneurs might be distinguished. Topics surveyed include careerreasons, job and life satisfaction, entrepreneurial expectations, innovationand problem-solving style, and social skills. Chapters in Part III, "The Start-up Process," explore the process ofbusiness formation. They describe the kinds and types of businesses, steps andphases of the process, social networks, funding, and business expectations. Part IV, "The Entrepreneurial Environment," explores the context ofthe startup effort and the strategic and technology orientations of theemerging new firms. The first US Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics [PSED I] is the most comprehensive assessment of the firm creation process yet completed. Based on a representative sample of those actively involved in business creation, analysis begins with the consideration of 75 factors that may affect the decision of adults to get involved in the creation of a new business, followed by a detailed exploration of over 130 factors that may be associated with completing the start-up process with a new firm. The results indicate, first, that over ten million persons are involved in the firm start-up phase as nascent entrepreneurs. Second, the major factors associated with entry into the start-up process have little impact on completion of the process with an operating business. Third, activities pursued in the start-up process - not the characteristics of the entrepreneur, the start-up, or the location - have a major impacts on the transition from start-up to a successful new firm. There is little impact associated with being male; being White, Black or Hispanic; having more education; being wealthy; having experience with other start-ups; having an “entrepreneurial personality”; or being in a supportive environment. This project demonstrates the value of tracking a representative sample of nascent entrepreneurs with a longitudinal study. Implications for future research, entrepreneurs, and public policy are substantial. Evidence suggests that both nascent and young firms (henceforth: “new firms”)—despite typically being small and resource-constrained—are sometimes able to innovate effectively. Such firms are seldom able to invest in lengthy and expensive development processes, which suggests that they may frequently rely instead on other pathways to generate innovativeness within the firm. In this paper, we develop and test arguments that “bricolage,” defined as making do by applying combinations of the resources at hand to new problems and opportunities, provides an important pathway to achieve innovation for new resource-constrained firms. Through bricolage, resource-constrained firms engage in the processes of “recombination” that are core to creating innovative outcomes. Based on a large longitudinal dataset, our results suggest that variations in the degree to which firms engage in bricolage behaviors can provide a broadly applicable explanation of innovativeness under resource constraints by new firms. We find no general support for our competing hypothesis that the positive effects may level off or even turn negative at high levels of bricolage.

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) programfocuses on entrepreneurship and the impact it has on a nation's economic growthand employment opportunities.The process through which GEM was created isdescribed, including details regarding data collection. For the GEM, entrepreneurs are defined "as adults in the process ofsetting up a business they will (partly) own and or currently owning andmanaging and operating young business" (p. 209).The initial effortsat gathering small collections of information then widened to include surveysof entire countries and resulted in the creation of the EntrepreneurialResearch Consortium (ERC) and the U.S. Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics(PSED).Although similar to PSED, the GEM project seeks data to determinethe prevalence of entrepreneurial activity at single points in time, ratherthan longitudinally. Detailed explanations are provided regarding the survey and interviewmethods, survey components, screening criteria, measures of entrepreneurialactivity, and issues of reliability regarding entrepreneurialactivity.The perspectives of national experts regarding the criteria forGEM inclusion are discussed.
