Lavender (Lavandula) is a genus of 39 known species of flowering plants in the
mint family, Lamiaceae.
Other Names:
Alhucema, Common Lavender, English Lavender, French Lavender, Garden
Lavender, Huile Essentielle de Lavande, Lavanda, Lavande, Lavande à
Feuilles Étroites, Lavande Anglaise, Lavande Commune, Lavande des Alpes,
Lavande du Jardin, Lavande Espagnole, Lavande Fine, Lavande Française,
Lavande Officinale, Lavande Vraie, Lavandula, Lavandula angustifolia,
Lavandula dentate, Lavandula latifolia, Lavandula officinalis, Lavandula
pubescens, Lavandula spica, Lavandula stoechas, Lavandula vera, Lavender
Essential Oil, Ostokhoddous, Spanish Lavender, Spike Lavender, True
Lavender.
Many members of the genus are cultivated extensively in temperate
climates as ornamental plants for garden and landscape use, for use as culinary
herbs, and also commercially for the extraction of essential oils. The most widely
cultivated species, Lavandula angustifolia (Officinalis), is often referred to as
lavender, and there is a color named for the shade of the flowers of this species.
Lavender Oil. Lavender oil is generally used in skin care for its anti-
inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, bactericidal, cicatrisant and fungicidal
properties . Lavender oils and extraction contain more than 100 compounds, with
the two major constituents being linalool and linalylacetate.
Other constituents include thujene,- pinene, camphene, sabinene, - pinene,
myrcene, p – cymene, limonene, 1,8 – cineole, (Z)- and (E) ocimene, terpinene,
camphor, terpinene – 4 – o l, lavandulol, lavandulylacetate,- caryophyllene,
(Z) - and (E) farnesene etc.
Health Benefits. most important health benefits of lavender include its ability to
relieve stress, improve mood, promote restful sleep, reduce inflammation,
lower skin irritation, prevent infections, eliminate dandruff etc. Research has
revealed that the essential oil of lavender may be useful for
treating anxiety, insomnia, depression, and restlessness. Some studies even
suggest that lavender can help digestive issues such as vomiting, nausea,
intestinal gas, upset stomach, and abdominal swelling.
By inhalation, lavender is used as aromatherapy for insomnia, pain, and
agitation related to dementia.
In Dermatology Lavender is applied to the skin for hair loss (alopecia areata).
In foods and beverages, lavender is used as a flavor component.
In manufacturing, lavender is used in pharmaceutical products and as a
fragrance ingredient in soaps, cosmetics, perfumes, and decorations.

-Side Effects,Interactions. When taken by mouth, lavender can cause
constipation, headache, and increased appetite. Surgery: Lavender might slow
down the central nervous system. If used in combination with anesthesia and other
medications given during and after surgery, it might slow down the central nervous
system too much. Stop using lavender at least 2 weeks before a scheduled
surgery.
-Repeated topical use (applying onto the skin) of lavender oil may cause
prepubertal gynecomastia, a condition which causes enlarged breast tissue in
boys before puberty. A study was published in 2007 on the use of lavender
and gynecomastia in prepubescent boys, because of possible hormonal effects
leading to gynecomastia.
-Pregnancy and breast-feeding-Avoid use!
Interactions. Lavender might cause sleepiness and drowsiness. Taking lavender
along with sedative medications might cause too much sleepiness.
Do not use Lavender or Lavender containing foods,beverages or cosmetics With:
Some sedative medications include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam
(Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), amobarbital
(Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), pentobarbital
(Nembutal), phenobarbital (Luminal), secobarbital (Seconal), and others….
