Abstract and Figures

This paper presents a study to investigate the effects of big five personal traits on emotional intelligence on some Iranian firms located in city of Tehran, Iran. The proposed study uses two questionnaires, one, which is originally developed by McCare and Costa (1992) [McCrae, R. R., & Costa, P. T., Jr. (1992). Discriminant validity of NEO-PI-R facet scales. Educational and Psychological Measurement, 52, 229-237.] for measuring personality traits and the other, which is used for measuring emotional intelligence . The first questionnaire consists of five personal categories including extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability versus neuroticism, and openness. Using structural equation modeling and stepwise regression model, the study has detected a positive and meaningful relationship between four components namely, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness as well as openness and emotional intelligence. In addition, the study detects a negative and meaningful relationship between neuroticism and emotional intelligence.

This paper presents a study to investigate the effects of big five personal traits on emotional

1. Introduction and literature review
Personality is an abstract concept and different experts have provided various definitions for it. Most
scholars emphasize that personality is a combination of thoughts, emotions and motivation of
individuals. In a comprehensive definition, personality is an interpersonal dynamic structure, which
includes physical and psychological systems and the component provides individuals’ thoughts and
behaviors characteristic (Allport, 1961). Personality normally deals with individual differences
among people in behavior patterns, cognition and emotion. Different personality theorists present
their own definitions and description of the word based on their theoretical positions. Personality is
usually divided into various components called the Big Five; namely openness to experience,
conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism (or emotionality). These components
are stable over time and seem to be attributable to a person’s genetics rather than the impacts of one’s

environment. There are some investigations on whether the relationship between happiness and
extraversion seen in adults could also be observed among children. These achievements help identify
children that are more likely to experience episodes of depression and develop various kinds of
treatment that such children would likely to respond to. In both children and adults, many studies
indicate that genetics, as opposed to environmental factors, exert a bigger impact on happiness levels.
According to McLarnon and Carswell (2013), stability in the measurement of personality plays
essential role on its construct and predictive validity. The personality differentiation implies that
intelligence could be a threat to the measurement of personality. McLarnon and Carswell (2013)
constructed on existing literature by applying multi-group confirmatory factor analytic measurement
invariance methods to the item-level responses of a commonly applied personality inventory. In
contrast to recently published findings, their results recommend that the measurement of personality
is not the same across intelligence levels. These results have important implications for the
implementation of personality in research and practice. They maintained that personality measures
are still important predictors of key criteria.
Laverdière et al. (2013) evaluated the factor structure and the measurement invariance of the Mini-
International Personality Item Pool (Mini-IPIP), which was a brief instrument evaluating personality
traits based on the Big Five models. Two samples were gathered comprising nearly 800 participants
and using confirmatory factor reported that a five-factor solution were consistent with the Big Five
model.
Schell and Oswald (2013) presented a study investigating the effect of item order in personality
measurement on reliability, measurement equivalence and scale-level correlations. In their survey, a
big sample of university students filled one of three forms of the International Personality Item Pool
version of the Big Five personality inventory: items sorted at random, items sorted by factor, and
items cycled through factors. Their findings indicated that the underlying measurement model and the
internal consistency of the IPIP-Big Five scale was not impacted by differences in item order. In
addition, most of the scale-level correlations among factors were not substantially different across
forms.
Recent studies have found that some personality disorders (PDs) increase the persistence of several
Axis I disorders. Vergés et al. (2013) aimed to extend published analyses to the case of anxiety
disorders and to detect the robustness of the associations in order to investigate examining time-of-
measurement effects. They reported a robust pattern of higher odds ratios for post-diction among PDs
assessed at baseline, and lower odds ratios for post-diction among PDs evaluated at follow-up,
recommending a time of measurement artifact.
Dobewall et al. (2014) performed an investigation in order to find out whether we can judge other
people’s values precisely, or values are too subjective for evaluation. They compared self-other
agreement in personal values with agreement in the Big Five personality traits. The results
recommended that people could evaluate values of others whom they know well with remarkable
accuracy. Therefore, other-ratings of personal values can be applied to validate and complement self-
report value measures.
2. The proposed study
This paper presents a study to investigate the effects of key personal characteristics on emotional
intelligence on some Iranian firms located in city of Tehran, Iran. The proposed study uses the
questionnaire developed by McCare and Costa (1992). The questionnaire consists of five personal
categories including extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability versus
neuroticism, and openness on emotional intelligence. Fig. 1 demonstrates the structure of the

As we can observe from the results of Fig. 1, most participants were married and highly educated.
Table 1 shows some basic statsitics associated with the proposed study of this paper.

Based on the results of Table 2, all statistics are within desirable levels and we may use the results of
structural equation modeling to examine the hypotheses of the survey. The implementation of
Kolmogorov–Smirnov test indicates that all data are normally distributed and we may use Pearson
correlation test to verify the relationships between various components.
3. The results
In this section, we present details of our findings on testing various hypotheses of the survey. We first
present details of our Pearson test to verify the relationships between various components and they
are shown in Table 3 as follows,

The results of Pearson correlation test indicate that there were some positive and meaningful
relationships between Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness as well as Openness with
emotional intelligence. In addition, there is a negative and meaningful relationship between
Neuroticism and emotional intelligence when the level of significance is five percent. We have also
performed stepwise regression method to study the effects of various factors on emotional
intelligence and Table 4 demonstrates the results of our survey.

As we can observe from the results of Table 4, four independent variables influence on emotional
intelligence, positively and one influences on emotional intelligence negatively. Therefore, we can
confirm all hypotheses of the survey.
4. Discussion and conclusion
In this paper, we have performed an empirical investigation to study the effects of different factors;
namely Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability versus Neuroticism, and
Openness on emotional intelligence. The study has accomplished among people who were employed
with various industries in city of Tehran, Iran. The results have indicated that being extraversion is
the most important factor on development of emotional intelligence followed by being agreeableness.
The results of the survey are consistent with findings of Petrides and Furnham (2001), Dawda and
Hart (2000), Diener and Lucas (1999), Rusting and Larsen (1997), Saklofske et al. (2003), Schutte et
al. (1998) and Watson, D. (2000).
Correlation between extraversion as well as neuroticism and emotional intelligence, respectively, in
terms of specificity and regulation is justified by setting a positive mood, negative mood.
Extraversion and Neuroticism represent the tendency to experience positive and negative emotions.
These two tendencies, which can result to two positive and negative attitudes is correlated with
emotional intelligence. In addition, the correlation between experience and flexibility, compatibility
and conscientiousness and emotional intelligence can be adjusted depending on the overlap between
the components of emotional intelligence involves feelings and emotions, implementation and
evaluation of the efficiency of the emotions and passions and traits related sub-taking experienced.
The results showed that the dimensions of extraversion and neuroticism could change the order of
emotional intelligence both positively and negatively. Extroversion increases the willingness to
experience pleasurable events. Extraversion also predisposes individuals to experience positive
emotions. This preparation can help a person appear to be more efficient, especially in the area of
personal and social relationships.
In terms of the main components of emotional intelligence, these competencies can operate in three
dimensions. In terms of emotion and excitement of extroversion, it can underlie the increased
experience events and emotions towards enjoyable and positive actions, which could contribute to
emotional intelligence. In the application and efficiency of the emotions, extroversion and emotional
intelligence by strengthening mechanisms allowing the person to be to improve and develop social
relationships and emotions. Obviously, this doubles the efficiency by making a positive impact on
both sides of the equation governing the relationships benefit. After evaluating emotions,
extroversion through increased positive feelings and enjoyable experiences, the conditions are more
relaxed and more optimistic to assess their emotions. On the other hand, neuroticism increases
people’s tendencies towards having more stressful events and increases people’s talent for having
negative events. Therefore, the people will become more vulnerable against people’s daily activities.
Other characteristics including a tendency to experience anxiety, tension, hostility, low top, irrational
thoughts, depression and low self-esteem can also be a part of one's abilities to have a negative
impact on social relationships and emotions.

Personality is one of the central constructs of psychology, however, its extensive scales can hinder its inclusion in various studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to verify whether the two short versions of the Big Five Inventory (BFI-15p and BFI-10p) present evidence of validity and reliability in a sample of 451 Mexican university students. (57.2% women; Mage = 20.84). The BFI-15p and BFI-10p were analyzed through exploratory structural equation modeling (WLSMV estimation method and geomin rotation), and it was found that the BFI-15p presented a satisfactory fit index and a coherent internal structure, as well as significant associations with a brief measure of emotional intelligence. The construct reliability coefficients and scores were also adequate. It was concluded that the BFI-15p presents satisfactory psychometric properties for use with university students.

In making investment decisions on the Indonesian Stock Exchange, this study evaluates the relationship between personality traits and individual investor activity bias. This research uses a questionnaire obtained from Indonesia's 205 individual investors. Modelling of structural equations (SEM) is used to analyse the impact of personality characteristics on component behaviour bias. This finding indicates that the traits of neuroticism, extraversion, and openness are strongly related to the different biased behaviours of individual investors on the Indonesian Stock Exchange. This analysis offers evidence that a relationship exists.

Personality as a construct defines individuals into different types or categories on the base of traits they exhibit or the ways they behave. Personality knowledge can predict human responses in a variety of contexts. In this regard, researchers have limited the wide range of personality traits into five traits. Personality researchers have agreed on this five factors personality model for use in personality research. These five traits are significant in the prediction of students' academic behaviour and academic performance. Emotional intelligence constructs overlaps with certain aspects of these five traits of personality. Hence, the current study estimated the importance of Five factor personality traits model in the prediction of emotional intelligence. Four hundred and twenty eight students who were conveniently available provided information about their emotional intelligence and personality traits. Linear regression revealed that all personality traits can significantly predict students' emotional intelligence. The Extraversion trait appeared as the most important trait as compared to the Neuroticism trait, which showed the least importance in the prediction of emotional intelligence. Based on results and literature review recommendations were made.

The main purpose of this article is to reveal the interaction between trait emotional intelligence and positive psychology ideas. The article reviews the main idea of positive psychology, examines the 3 main levels of this discipline, and their essential principles. The article also provides brief insights into different theories of emotional intelligence, focusing on the features of trait emotional intelligence, its structure and functions. Theoretical insights revealing the interactions between the ideas of positive psychology and emotional intelligence are presented not only in terms of functions of trait emotional intelligence, but also in terms of its trait structure manifestation at different levels of positive psychology. It has been established that the interaction of trait emotional intelligence and positive psychology exists due to functions of emotional intelligence, its perspectives in predicting life success and the structure of traits manifested at the subjective, individual and group levels of positive psychology.

p>TThe aim of the study is to analyse teachers’ opinion about the development of emotional intelligence in students who have special educational needs in inclusive schools. The method of the questionnaire survey was chosen to achieve the research aim. The study employed two developed questionnaires based on the principle of Likert scale (1-5). The questionnaires were developed for teachers according to the parts of the structure of trait emotional intelligence for students aged 7 to 12 and 13 to 17 years. Questionnaires potentially reveal teachers’ opinion about several aspects of emotional intelligence development: how and how often teachers assess, organize targeted and non-targeted educational activities for individual parts of the structure of students’ emotional intelligence and promote awareness of their importance. After conducting the research, it was found that the development of parts of the structure of emotional intelligence was carried out differently depending on students’ age. Differences were recorded both between the developed parts of the structure and between applied educational activities. Both statistically significant and insignificant research data were obtained and it was found that the development of emotional intelligence for younger students was more oriented to their inner self-knowledge; while for older students, to the aspects of socialization. </p

Personality tests are intended to evaluate and assess information about a person's attitudes, choices, interests, feelings, and social and situational interactions. Personality assessments might take the shape of activities, questionnaires, observer ratings etc. Usually, respondents are often requested to rate their degree of agreement with a series of statements meant to evaluate their personality characteristics in tests. The study determines the applications of the Personality tests such as the Big Five Personality test in predicting the job performance of the employees and their work satisfaction. Big Five Personality traits break down into openness, extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism. To accomplish this, a total sample of 1974 responses was collected for assessment. And the analysis was carried out during Factor Analysis and Cluster Analysis. The result demonstrates that the association between Conscientiousness and Agreeableness is stronger. It also implies that their personality traits impact their work efficiency. This study also offers an overview of the outcomes obtained in the literature from several research on personality tests.

Background: As the role of emotional intelligence has been increasingly explored, researchers generally agree that emotional intelligence is a better predictor of individual success. And fortunately, emotional intelligence is somewhat easily shaped. Schools are important microsites for the shaping of an individual's emotional intelligence. Good teacher-student relationship contribute to the shaping and development of students' emotional intelligence. Objective: Based on the theory of developmental contextualism, the current study aims to identify the relationship between good teacher-student relationship and students' emotional intelligence, and the mediating roles of students' openness and emotional intelligence. Methods: In this study, a total of 352 adolescents (11-15 years old) from two schools were surveyed using the teacher-student relationship scale, big five inventory openness subscale, and emotional intelligence scale. Results: Teacher-student relationship were positively correlated with students' openness, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Teacher-student relationship positively predicted students' emotional intelligence; students' openness and empathy played a fully mediating role in teacher-student relationship and emotional intelligence. Conclusion: The closeness and supportiveness of the teacher-student relationship were positively related to students' openness, empathy, and emotional intelligence were positively correlated.

This review aims to establish if personality traits influence a viewer's choice of television shows. This study focuses on linking personality type as a factor that affects a person's viewing pattern and options, along with which personality trait under the big five model affects this choice/pattern positively and negatively. This mind-boggling growth has been herded by a considerable rise in the number of online Indian viewers. The terms Media/content choice and preferences will be used interchangeably with TV show choice and preferences for this review. The existing literature and material on media choices validate each personality trait's possible positive/negative effect on the viewing pattern. However, this study points out that, to fully understand the magnitude and intensity of this effect, socio-demographic variables have to be considered and analyzed along with psychological variables. This approach to media choice will help us understand the role of media psychology better and establish its significance in the media industry.

Can we judge other people’s values accurately, or are values too subjective to assess? We compared self-other agreement in personal values with agreement in the Big Five personality traits. Self-other agreement in four higher-order values (median r = .47) and in six culture-specific value factors (median r = .50) was substantial and similar to that for the Big Five personality traits (median r = .51). When corrected for attenuation due to measurement error self-other agreement was high for all three scales (median rs > .65). The results suggest that people can assess values of others whom they know well with remarkable accuracy. Therefore, other-ratings of personal values can be used to validate and complement self-report value measures.

The main purpose of this study is to assess the factor structure and the measurement invariance of the Mini-International Personality Item Pool (Mini-IPIP; Donnellan, Oswald, Baird, & Lucas, 2006). The Mini-IPIP is a brief instrument evaluating personality traits according to the Big Five models. Two samples were collected comprising nearly 800 participants. Confirmatory factor analyzes revealed a five-factor solution consistent with the Big Five model. Measurement invariance analyses showed that the Mini-IPIP was reasonably invariant across samples, genders and age groups. Recent studies using data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) have found that some personality disorders (PDs) increase the persistence of several Axis I disorders. However, these effects are potentially confounded with the data collection wave in which PDs were assessed. Our aim was to extend published analyses to the case of anxiety disorders and to determine the robustness of the associations to analyses examining time-of-measurement effects. Persistence of anxiety disorders was defined either as follow-up diagnosis among participants diagnosed at baseline ("prediction") or baseline diagnosis among participants diagnosed at follow-up ("post-diction"). Results revealed a robust pattern of higher odds ratios for post-diction among PDs assessed at baseline, and lower odds ratios for post-diction among PDs assessed at follow-up, suggesting a time of measurement artifact. Although only 4% of associations were robust to both predictive and post-dictive analyses, these were consistent with previous research.

This paper describes a study examining the impact of item order in personality measurement on reliability, measurement equivalence and scale-level correlations. A large sample of university students completed one of three forms of the International Personality Item Pool version of the Big Five personality inventory: items sorted at random, items sorted by factor, and items cycled through factors. Results showed that the underlying measurement model and the internal consistency of the IPIP-Big Five scale was unaffected by differences in item order. Also, most of the scale-level correlations among factors were not significantly different across forms. Implications for the administration of tests and interpretation of test scores are discussed, and future research directions are offered.

Two analyses were conducted to examine the discriminant validity of 30 facet scales from the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PIR). To examine cross-observer validity of specific variance in the facet scales, partial correlations between self-reports and peer (N = 250) and spouse (N = 68) ratings on the facets were calculated, controlling for the five common factors. All 60 convergent partial correlations were positive, and 48 (80%) were significant. In the second analysis, Adjective Check List (Gough and Heilbrun, 1983) correlates of the facet scales were identified in a sample of 305 adults. Judges correctly matched scales to correlates in most cases, providing additional evidence for discriminant validity.

This series of studies describes the development of a measure of emotional intelligence based on the model of emotional intelligence developed by Salovey and Mayer [Salovey, P. & Mayer, J. D. (1990). Emotional intelligence. Imagination, Cognition and Personality, 9, 185–211.]. A pool of 62 items represented the different dimensions of the model. A factor analysis of the responses of 346 participants suggested the creation of a 33-item scale. Additional studies showed the 33-item measure to have good internal consistency and testretest reliability. Validation studies showed that scores on the 33-item measure 1.(a) correlated with eight of nine theoretically related constructs, including alexithymia, attention to feelings, clarity of feelings, mood repair, optimism and impulse control;2.(b) predicted first-year college grades;3.(c) were significantly higher for therapists than for therapy clients or for prisoners;4.(d) were significantly higher for females than males, consistent with prior findings in studies of emotional skills;5.(e) were not related to cognitive ability and6.(f) were associated with the openness to experience trait of the big five personality dimensions.

Stability in the measurement of personality is crucial to its construct and predictive validity. The personality differentiation by intelligence hypothesis suggests that intelligence may be a threat to the measurement of personality. This study builds on existing literature by applying multigroup confirmatory factor analytic measurement invariance techniques to the item-level responses of a commonly used personality inventory. In contrast to recently published findings, our results suggest that the measurement of personality is not equivalent across intelligence levels. Though these results have important implications for the use of personality in research and practice, we maintain that personality measures are still important predictors of key criteria. We discuss future research directions, and hope that the current study highlights the need to increase the sophistication of currently available measurement techniques, and will bring continued examination of the personality differentiation by intelligence hypothesis.

The study examined reliability and validity of a new measure of emotional (i.e. non-cognitive) intelligence, the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i; Bar-On, 1997, in a sample of 243 university students. Results indicated that the EQ-i domain and component scales had good item homogeneity and internal consistency. Scores were not unduly affected by response styles or biases. The EQ-i scales had a meaningful pattern of convergent validities with respect to measures of normal personality, depression, somatic symptomatology, intensity of affective experience and alexithymia. The reliability and validity results for men and women were very similar. Overall, the results suggested that the EQ-i is a promising measure of emotional intelligence. We recommend strategies for further validation of the EQ-i, as well as the construct of emotional intelligence.

Two different theoretical models have been used to explain relationships between the personality dimensions of extraversion and neuroticism and the affect dimensions of positive and negative mood. Eysenck's model predicts that extraversion should relate to positive affect, but not negative affect, and that neuroticism should relate to negative affect, but not positive affect. The model proposed by Gray and Newman asserts that there should be an interaction between extraversion and neuroticism in predicting positive and negative affect, such that the relationship between neuroticism and affect depends on one's position on the extraversion dimension. The purpose of the present study is to test these two theoretical models (Eysenck or Gray/Newman) in relation to positive and negative affect susceptibility. Results best fit predictions derived from Eysenck's model. Extraversion was positively related to positive affect following a pleasant mood induction, and neuroticism was positively related to negative affect following a negative mood induction. There was no evidence for an extraversion × neuroticism interaction in predicting emotional reactions, as would be expected from the Gray/Newman model.

Intended for "college students who have little or no background in psychology," this edition incorporates a restatement of Allport's thesis that man is not a reactive robot but a being with unique potential for growth and a revision of his argument regarding functional autonomy. New chapters dealing with cultural factors in personality, cognition, the self, learning, personality assessment, and person perception are included.
