Abstract

The floor area of the Ferranti Environmental Test Laboratoraies at Silverknowes, Edinburgh, has been increased - from 9000 sq ft to 27,000 sq ft - and the test facilities greatly expanded and improved. Built and equipped at a cost of 1 million pounds sterling, the new facilities include three walk-in hydraulic equipment test cells as well as additional laboratories, clean rooms, test equipment manufacturing workshops, design and administrative offices. Fully supervised extended-duration tests can be performed as the Complex is manned 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Environmental and reliability tests can be carried out to all current MIL-STD and DEF-STAN specifications. Facilities available include high and low temperature cycling combined with vibration sweeping in both horizontal and vertical planes and at simulated altitudes ranging from sea level to 150,000 ft. Other environments which can be simulated include: high and low-humidity; sand and dust; fungus; salt corrosion; contamination; rain and fine mist; exposure to sunlight; water immersion; temperature shock; and mechanical shock.
