Abstract

Results are given of an investigation of photocouplers in the 6 pin Dual-In-Line package. 24 variants from 11 manufacturers have been tested in some extreme environments. A total of 960 photocouplers were tested. All the test items were collected from the Danish market. Two variants, however, are in a metal encapsulation similar or equal to the TO-72 encapsulation. This makes it possible to compare plastic with metal encapsulation. The result of the investigation demonstrates the very poor quality level on the Danish market. Only three of the 24 variants did not fail. One variant shows a 90% failure in isolation voltage. The most remarkable result of the investigation, however, is that 8. 5% of the 960 test items failed in the initial test.
