Abstract

In this chapter, we attempt to accomplish two tasks; on the one hand, we attempt to briefly look at the origin of drama as a distinct genre of literature. Of course, we know that a problem of categorization exists between drama as a text and drama as a performance. We therefore attempt to delineate the nature of this problem as it relates to the understanding of the relationship between drama, theatre and performance. On the other hand, we attempt to look at the general categorization of drama along its content, forms, uses and functions. This briefly leads us to interpretative tendencies in general literary appreciation as would be expected especially in an attempt to group or categorize dramatic text or performance.
