Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the modeling of industrial–postindustrial transition in Russian society. The very special part of this process concerns the relations between lordship and bondage. The relations between Lordship and Bondage in a context of so-called Master–Slave dialectic can elucidate a way to the knowledge-based society as a kind of modern capitalistic society. Design/methodology/approach An author uses a complex of methods. He applies a phenomenological approach, mixed with the dialectics and analytical approach. Phenomenological approach presupposes the neediness of attention on a work of the conscious actions within formation of the social experiences. The modification of dialectics helps to make the comprehension of the history of social relations as a game of forces in self-consciousness, which nowadays bases on the attitudes between leaders and led people. A variant of analytic methodology helps to understand each problem as a puzzle. Findings As a result, author finds a spirit of the processes within development of knowledge-based society and innovative economy depends on so-called Master–Slave dialectic. In Europe, Master–Slave dialectic caused the leading role of scientists. In Russia, scientists depended on the Government and played secondary role in economy. Research limitations/implications Research is the philosophical treatise, which demonstrates the speculative evaluation of industrial–postindustrial transition in Russian society. Practical implications Practical implications is the constructing the prognosis of the development of the Russian society. Social implications Research can help to improve the understanding of the mechanisms of leadership in society. Originality/value Originality of the paper is the reconstruction of social forms, which caused the social progress in Russia.

Russian way to the knowledge-based society
What is it about?
The purpose of this paper is to present the modeling of industrial–postindustrial
transition in Russian society. The very special part of this process concerns the
relations between lordship and bondage. The relations between Lordship and
Bondage in a context of so-called Master–Slave dialectic can elucidate a way to the
knowledge-based society as a kind of modern capitalistic society. An author uses a
complex of methods. He applies a phenomenological approach, mixed with the
dialectics and analytical approach. Phenomenological approach presupposes the
neediness of attention on a work of the conscious actions within formation of the
social experiences. The modication of dialectics helps to make the comprehension
of the history of social relations as a game of forces in self-consciousness, which
nowadays bases on the attitudes between leaders and led people. A variant of
analytic methodology helps to understand each problem as a puzzle.
Why is it important?
The author nds a spirit of the processes within development of knowledge-based
society and innovative economy depends on so-called Master–Slave dialectic. In
Europe, Master–Slave dialectic caused the leading role of scientists. In Russia,
scientists depended on the Government and played secondary role in economy.
Originality of the paper is the reconstruction of social forms, which caused the social
progress in Russia.

... In a globalized society, transformations of intellectual activity constantly generate controversies, especially in the field of the role of intellectual activity in the organization and management of society (Kulikov, 2016a;Ikenberry and Nexon, 2019;Eilstrup-Sangiovanni and Hofmann, 2020;Flockhart, 2020;Kavalski, 2020;Kurki, 2020). The issue of intellectual activity is related to the issue of decision-making. ...
Article
Purpose The purpose of this paper is the foresight of new forms of intellectual activity in society. Design/methodology/approach This research examines the ways of predicting the development of intellectual activity. To reveal the topic, the author uses semiotics and the method of building possible worlds. The author explores intellectual activity in terms of sign systems. From this angle, the logic of the narrative expresses the order of the organization of intellectual activity. This approach reveals the connections between images of possible worlds and decision-making methods. Findings The author conceptually outlines the forms of intellectual activity in a globalized society. A globalized society is a complex of political, economic, cultural and scientific ties that spread throughout the world. The foresight of new forms of intellectual activity allows conceptually sketching the practical use of proper decision-making methods. These methods involve the use of artificial machine intelligence, collective intelligence, etc. Forms of intellectual activity are related to the worldbuilding that cause the development of culture through the development of knowledge. The description of forms of intellectual activity shows a promising way of humanitarian research in a globalized society. Research limitations/implications The research implies technological metaphors related to the history of culture and the role of intellectual activity in it. Practical implications The author examines the practical possibilities of applying traditional humanities for the development of new forms of intellectual activity in a globalized society. Social implications In the social space, exposing the effectiveness of traditional humanities helps to assess the consequences of using intellectual activity in practice. Originality/value The originality of this research is associated with the identification of links between the conceptual provisions of semiotics and the method for building possible worlds.

... When we speak about the option of a "Russian way", it is necessary to account for the resource-rich structure of the economy and the heterogeneity of economic development regarding economic complexity and coherence. In particular, the idea of a Russian way of economic development and special management models is often found in the introduction of innovations, the transition to a knowledge economy, and knowledge society [Kulikov, 2016;Michailova, 2000;Ponomarev, Dezhina, 2016]. In general, the Russian way is often associated with effectiveness through inefficiency, and this research has proven that this logic is present when it comes to IT management. ...

N owadays many business models rely heavily upon adequate IT management practices. Quite often in developed economies, the role of IT has organically evolved over decades from a mere business support function to an efficiency driver and enabler, and finally (at least in some cases) to a driver of business innovation and digital transformation. Unlike developed countries, little is known about the role of IT in companies of countries with transitional economies, such as Russia. Historical, political, and geographical reasons have in many areas of life led to Кeywords: information systems management; transition economies; role of IT; digital business transformation; case study research a "Russian way of doing things". Does this also hold true for IT management? By way of case study research, this contribution investigates the features of the IT-role and use in large Russian companies that are aware of the need for digital business transformation. The obtained results allow one to not only gain a better understanding of the situation in Russian companies through the prism of IT management practices but also to identify possible trends and challenges that appear relevant for organizations in other countries in economic transition or even in developed economies as well.

The subject of our research is the features of naturalism and of historicism in the whole system of the scientific worldview. The author identifies and describes the types of naturalism, achieving the purpose of clarification of circumstances in which its separate options become complementary ways of scientific understanding of reality. The resulting picture is enriched with the features of historicism, introducing the element of relativity to the scientific views of the world. Special attention is paid to the possibility to reconstruct the eidos of science as a generalized ideal of research activities. The research methodology includes the implementation of the phenomenological research program, the foundations of which were laid in the works of Husserl. This program allows us to understand the idea of science in the framework of the ideal of cognitive activity, the roots of which date back to the writings of Aristotle. The phenomenological perspective of our research allows us to see the essential characteristics of both naturalism and historicism, to identify options for their constructive engagement. The result reveals a possibility to make a nontrivial conclusion about the relation between naturalism and historicism, for the debate of naturalism and of historicism, taken by itself, i.e. as relatively independent phenomenon, opens horizons of the internally unified consciousness understood in science in two ways. The first one is a set of research intentions of the validity; the second one coincides with the implicit dependence of the scientific worldview from the orientation to the historical changes of the foundations of self-reflection of science that, in fact, form the semantic structure of scientific knowledge as a unique ideal for research activities.

The problem of definition and correlation of «information» and «knowledge» concepts relevant for the rational activity of the modern human is analyzed in the article. The authors are sure both of these concepts should be considered strictly within a certain type of scientific rationality. The modern post-non-classical type of scientific rationality connects the human activity more with the emotional than with the intellectual perception of knowledge and information. So the world around us is no longer a result of cognition, but an object of pleasure connected with experience of new feelings and emotions. Within the latest rational tradition knowledge and information are functionally performing the same tasks: they are the main tools for ensuring the vital activity of the modern human. In the modern world pragmatism and utilitarianism have become the main characters of knowledge and information. They both are turned into a form of specific pragmatic matrix of rational activity typical for the modern human. The last one values most of all the pertinence of information and the performativity of knowledge.

Many commercially successful innovations are now arising from basic research carried out at universities. The boundary between pure science and applied research is blurred. In this context, governments worldwide have been promoting the concept of synergy between basic research carried out in academic institutions and applied research in the commercial sector. By applying different models they are trying to establish the most efficient way of facilitating this relationship with funding from the private sector. In this article, we have explored the case of Russia and overviewed the effects of ‘innovation enforcement’ policy developed by the Russian government in the late 2000s. As our case demonstrates, the outcome of such a policy is rather negative. However, there are also some positive side effects of the current Russian public policy. One example is the practice of the shared-used equipment. It allows developing trust between university-private company and results in mutually beneficial partnership. Moreover, it stimulates changes in industrial vision of the academic partner. Hence, in some cases, the policy of ‘innovation by coercion’ can have positive outcomes for it forces academia and industry to see joint collaborations more as a help rather than as a hindrance. The future of democratic societies is at stake in the manner we articulate the legitimacy of their decisions and the cognitive competence with which those decisions are taken. Nowadays this requirement clashes with the drawback that there is an indomitable dimension of ignorance that cannot be eliminated but rather needs to be managed. The experts’ advice increasingly takes on board these ‘unknown unknowns’, whereby the relationship between science and politics has become just as necessary as it is complex.

We explore the double-edged sword of recombination in generating breakthrough innovation: recombination of distant or diverse knowledge is needed because knowledge in a narrow domain might trigger myopia; but, recombination can be counterproductive when local search is needed to identify anomalies. We take into account how creativity shapes both the cognitive novelty of the idea and the subsequent realization of economic value. We develop a text-based measure of novel ideas in patents using topic modeling to identify those patents that originate new topics in a body of knowledge. We find that, counter to theories of recombination, patents that originate new topics are more likely to be associated with local search, while economic value is the product of broader recombinations as well as novelty.

Given that we have democracy of a kind in most of Europe, and that there seems a reasonable prospect of its survival in, and extension to the rest of, the sub-continent, this article asks whether and to what extent we also need European-level democratic politics and how we might hope to achieve this, against the background of the current crisis. This article examines the 'democratic deficit' in the EU and the tensions between its formal decision-making structures and the growth of what has been called 'executive federalism', and also between collective planning and deregulation.

Theodor W. Adorno asked in 1968: What is the fundamental question of the present structure of society? Do we live in late capitalism or an industrial society? In today's society, we can reformulate this question: What is the fundamental question of the present structure of society? Do we live in capitalism or an information society? This article deals with these questions. A typology of information society theories is presented. Radical discontinuous information society theories, sceptical views and continuous information society theories are distinguished. Second, an alternative concept that is grounded in Hegelian philosophy and Marxist political economy is presented. The basic argument is that the emergence of transnational informational capitalism is a transformational sublation, but not a radical one, and that informational capitalism is just one of the forms of capitalism that co-exist today. There is a unity of diversity of capitalism(s).

From reports on the growth and changing character of contemporary knowledge, it is argued that we live in a "knowledgeable society" with certain epistemological characteristics, among which are the development of more fruitful categories of thought, increased differentiation of ego from inner and outer worlds, an imagination of situations contrary to fact, reflective abstraction, changing truth criteria, and a changed philosophy of knowledge. This increase in knowledge and change in thoughtways lead to changes in policy-making procedures. There is increased application of scientific criteria for policy determination at the expense of the usual short-term political criteria and ideological thinking as well. In this situation, social knowledge is creating its own attitudinal disequilibrium.
