I. INTRODUCTION
In the last several decades there has been a revolution going
on in the self-development area. Every day it becomes more
and more clear that one of the main things influencing the
quality of people's lives is their way of thinking i.e. their
mental attitude. It is obvious that one's mental attitude
influences aspects like self-esteem and confidence. People's
experiences also show that their mental attitude may also have
a huge impact on various areas of their lives like health,
relationships or financial situation. In more and more medical
studies control groups (groups that did not get the medicament
and were not aware of that fact) show significant recoveries
just like the group that was really treated. This is well known as
placebo effect. Athletes and top sportsmen emphasize the
importance of their mental training. Let us, for example,
remind of the four minute mile myth. For a long time it was
believed that it is impossible for a human being to run a mile
for less than 4 minutes. When Roger Bannister finally managed
to achieve this in 1954, the 'four minute barrier' has since been
broken by many male athletes, and is now the standard of all
male professional middle distance runners. In the last 50 years
the mile record has been lowered by almost 17 seconds. The
internet expansion enabled us to become familiar with many
ordinary men and women who managed to make breakthroughs
in their previously mediocre lives and achieve huge success in
various aspects of their lives. All of them say that the most
important thing is one's mental attitude. Among other various
tools they have used, one of the widely spread techniques is
using affirmations. In this paper we will see the origin of
affirmations and their various uses in several life areas and we
will try to give a simple scientific explanation about how and
why using affirmations work. Then we will see how this
process can be alleviated and accelerated by using personal
computers and finally we will see a description of a computer
application that serves this purpose, developed by the author of
this paper. The paper is organized as follows. Section 2
discuses the origins of affirmations. Section 3 describes using
affirmations for improving confidence, health and financial
situation and section 4 gives a scientific explanation about how
and why affirmations work. Section 5 describes drawbacks of
affirmations and difficulties of their using in the standard way
and introduces the possible use of personal computers for
transcending these drawbacks and difficulties and section 6
describes the developed computer application. Section 7 is the
conclusion.
II. ORIGINS OF AFFIRMATIONS
The man who is considered to be the father of affirmations
and autosuggestions is Emile Coue [1, 2, 3]. He was a French
pharmacist and self-trained psychologist, who lived in the early
1900s. He operated a free clinic in Nancy (France), where
students came from around the world to learn his
autosuggestion techniques, many of them having tried various
orthodox medical treatments for their illnesses.
Coue combined his discovery of the placebo effect (which
had no name at that point) with the medical hypnotism that he
had previously learned. He had discovered that the human
mind had a greater influence over the human body than had
previously been suspected and learned that where a physical
cure failed, a hypnotic cure could be effective, at least for a
little while. Unfortunately, the patients tended to suffer a
relapse. However, when these patients added a special
affirmation to their regular habits, the cures became permanent.
Not only that, but secondary illnesses miraculously cleared up
on their own.
The main postulate of his method was that if you repeat a
statement, orally or mentally, with feeling for about 15 minutes
a day and do it consecutively for 21 days it will become a
command for your brain, which it will execute. His most
famous sentence, which helped many people to heal from
various illnesses, was "Every day in every way I'm getting
better and better". This affirmation was recited 20 times every
morning right after waking up and 20 times every night right
before going to bed. It was to be recited verbally, softly, with
faith but without force or effort.

Coue was a scientist and requested those who used his
methods to also act like scientists, so he requested from his
students to keep records of their sessions. There are lots of
noted cases in which his methods have helped people to
improve their medical conditions, or to heal completely,
including various illnesses such as: tuberculosis, asthma,
bronchitis, eczema, gout, rheumatism, kidney disease,
neuralgia, neurasthenia, varicose ulcers, sinus problems, heart
disease, paralysis, etc.
III. USING AFFIRMATIONS IN VARIOUS ASPECTS OF PEOPLE'S
LIVES
In this section we will consider using affirmations in three
different aspects of people's lives: self-confidence, health and
financial situation.
A. Usinf affirmations for improving self-confidence
Although Emil Coue started using affirmations for
improving health conditions, today affirmations are mainly
used for improving self-confidence. Coue himself was not
focused only on illnesses, but was advising people to use
affirmations on whatever subject they wish. Today there is
practically no self-improvement guru that has not used
affirmations to improve their own confidence or is not
recommending people to use affirmations for improving
confidence. In this paper we will focus on Susan Jeffers [4, 5,
6], since in [4] she describes an exercise that she uses on her
seminars, which may be considered to be a sort of scientific
proof that affirmations work. First a volunteer (preferably a
male) stands in front of the class and straightens his arm in
front of him with a job to strengthen his muscles and not let the
arm be pushed down. Then Jeffers tries to push his arm down
without success (since he is physically stronger than her). After
that the volunteer rests his arm, closes his eyes and repeats in
his head the sentence "I am a weak and worthless person" 10
times. His job is to really feel this while saying it as if it was
true. After that he straightens his arm again and has to use all
the power he has to stop Jeffers from pushing his arm down,
but without success. She always manages to push his arm
down. The volunteer is often surprised and wants to repeat the
exercise but the result is the same. After that he is to repeat the
sentence "I am a strong and worthy person" and this time he is
strong again, even stronger than the first time. If this is
repeated with various combinations of the positive and
negative sentence the results are always the same - he is strong
after the positive and weak after the negative sentence. This is
also true even when Jeffers does not know whether the
sentence was positive or negative while pushing the arm. This
experiment shows that the words we say (or think) have an
amazing effect on our minds.
Based on these findings, Jeffers advises that everybody
should pay attention to what phrases they use in their everyday
talk, and introduces a special "From Pain to Power" vocabulary
[4]. It shows which negative phrases are to be replaced with
proper positive ones. For example, "I can't" is to be replaced
with "I won't", "It's not my mistake" is to be replaced with "It's
completely my responsibility", "This is a problem" with "This
is an opportunity", "Life is a struggle" with "Life is an
adventure", etc.
B. Using affirmations for improving health
Even though there are lots of written cases of Coue's
students having success in improving their health conditions
using affirmations and autosuggestion, the most famous person
that introduced using affirmations for improving health is
Louise Hay [7-10]. She is an internationally known leader in
the self-help field. She herself was diagnosed with cancer and
managed to heal from it. Her key message is "If we are willing
to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed".
Hay says that our subconscious mind accepts whatever we
choose to believe. What you choose to think about yourself and
about life becomes true for you. If you want to believe that life
is lonely and that nobody loves you, then that is what you will
find in your world. However, if you are willing to release that
belief and to affirm for yourself the affirmation "Love is
everywhere and I am loving and lovable" and if you hold on to
that new affirmation and repeat it often, then it will become
true for you. Loving people will come into your life and you
will find yourself easily expressing love to others.
Hay explains that kids learn how to feel about themselves
and about life by the reactions of the adults around them. After
they grow up, they have a tendency to recreate the emotional
environment of their early home life. People also tend to treat
themselves the way their parents treated them, they scold and
punish themselves the same way. And they also love and
encourage themselves in the same way as they were loved and
encouraged as children. Whatever happens to us is a
consequence of our beliefs, since our beliefs attract people who
will treat us according to our beliefs. So, if you find yourself
saying "Everyone always does such and such to me, criticizes
me, is never there for me, uses me like a doormat and abuses
me" then this is your pattern. As long as you think that way you
will attract people who exhibit this behavior. According to Hay
the main reasons why we are sick are negative feelings like
resentment, criticism, guilt and fear. Resentment that is long
held can eat away at the body and become cancer, criticism as a
permanent habit can lead to arthritis in the body, guilt looks for
punishment and punishment creates pain while fear and the
tension it produces can create things like baldness, ulcers, even
sore feet. In [7] Hay literally says: "I have found that forgiving
and releasing resentment will dissolve even cancer. While this
may sound optimistic, I have seen and experienced it working."
The way to change is to change your attitude toward the
past and in order to release the past you must be willing to
forgive. Hay says: "We may not know how to forgive and we
may not want to forgive but the very fact that we say we are
willing to forgive begins the healing process. It is imperative
for our own healing that we release the past and forgive
everyone." The affirmation that sets you free is: "I forgive you
for not being the way I wanted you to be. I forgive you and I
set you free." In [8] Hay gives affirmations for various issues:
health, fearful emotions, critical thinking, addictions,
forgiveness, work, money and prosperity, friends, love and
intimacy and aging.
Speaking about using affirmations for improving health we
must also mention Gary Craig, the founder of EFT (Emotional
Freedom Techniques). In [11] he talks how he used
affirmations to loose more than 30 pounds. He used to be over

190 pounds, even 195 pounds at one point. He used to eat a lot
of cookies and ice cream almost daily. He decided it was time
for him to loose weight but he was not about to use will power.
Craig says he wanted to weigh 160 pounds and he used the
affirmation "My normal weight is 160 pounds, and that's what I
weigh". He was also daydreaming how he would look like,
how he could not hold his pants. He did not diet, but ate
whatever he wanted to eat. He would eat a lot of cookies and
ice cream if he felt like eating them. He would loose a little
weight and then gain a little bit. Then again he would loose a
little weight and gain a little bit. Then one day he noticed that
he forgot about the cookies when he went to the store. And he
did not have the motivation to go back to the store to buy them.
He continued with his affirmation and visualization, and also
continued loosing and gaining weight. After a while he stopped
eating ice cream and cookies at all. The important thing is that
it was not his conscious decision to do that, he was just not
enjoying it any more. He also started to eat a lot of fruits and
vegetables. Then he gradually ate less and less fruits and
vegetables until he changed his diet to eat normally. Six
months later he was 160 pounds. He knew he wasn't going to
gain weight back, and he explains why: "My new consistent
thoughts became my reality. I had a new picture of myself. I
changed my diet in the process as a consequence of this, not
because of will power." Several years later, at the moment
when he was speaking about this experience, he was still about
160 pounds, so the results were permanent. All of that was
gained by using just affirmations and visualizations.
C. Using affirmations for improving financial situation
When we talk about changing your mental attitude in order
to improve your financial situation, the expert and the most
famous person in this field is Bob Proctor [12, 13]. He has been
studying the concepts of how to make money for over 40 years.
He went from making $4,000 per year to making $175,000 per
year. After that he went on to make over $1,000,000 a year. In
[12] Proctor talks about a special exercise which shows you
why you do not have the amount of money you want to have.
You have to imagine that you are with several of your friends
and you announce them your intention to become wealthy
enough to live the way you choose to live. Then you imagine
how that would make you feel. Most people feel very
uncomfortable doing this. People who are already wealthy,
however, never feel uncomfortable when the subject of money
is brought up. If you ask yourself why, the most obvious
answer would be because they already have lots of money.
However, that is not the correct answer. Proctor says that it is
not that wealthy people do not feel uncomfortable about money
because they have it but it is the other way around - they have
money because they feel comfortable about it. In other words,
wealthy people have a state of mind that Proctor calls
"prosperity consciousness". So it follows that if you wish to
attract money, you must begin to foster a prosperity
consciousness as well. The way to do this is to start seeing
yourself, in your mind's eye, as already possessing the amount
of money that you desire. That way you will soon become very
comfortable with the idea of money. When that happens, you
will become as wealthy as you want. Proctor's most famous
affirmation for achieving success and financial independence is
"I am so happy and grateful now that money comes to me in
increasing quantities through multiple sources on a continuous
basis".
IV. SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION ABOUT HOW AND WHY
AFFIRMATIONS WORK
In the last section we have seen examples of three main
areas in which famous people, authors of bestsellers, describe
how to change your habits and your behavior using
affirmations. In each of these areas there were thousands, if not
millions, of people that, by following their advice, have
succeeded in changing their habits and behaviors using mainly
affirmations, and very often, nothing more than affirmations.
So we may agree that there is a lot of evidence that using
affirmations does work. However, the question that logically
arises is how and why affirmations work, what is the actual
mechanism behind this process. This is especially important if
we know that the average person today very often laughs when
she hears about affirmations and/or mocks at people doing
affirmations. We can easily find the answer in the field of
neuroscience. Simply stated, affirmations reinforce a chemical
pathway in the brain, making the connection between neurons
stronger. It is known that neurons that are routinely fired in a
specific pattern will strengthen their bond, that way wiring in a
complex network that will be automatically set off whenever a
trigger is presented in one's everyday life. We might conclude
that something similar to this process is what is going on in
someone's brain while she is doing affirmations. In a way the
process of doing affirmations is similar to Pavlov's famous
experiments with his dogs. Pavlov would give his dogs food
and at the same time he would ring a bell. The dogs would
salivate, which is a normal response triggered by the food.
After repeating this enough number of times, the dogs would
salivate by just hearing the bell, with no food around.
Practically the dogs created new neural pathways in their brains
in which they connected the sight of the food with the sound of
the bell.
We can now better understand how people form beliefs
about themselves from the early childhood - according to
psychologists the child's character is created in the first several
years of its life. If the child repeatedly hears 'You are no good',
'You are stupid' it creates appropriate neural pathways in its
brain so it becomes something it believes to be true. The same
is true for positive statements like 'You are a good boy/girl' or
'You are smart'. Very often this is the reason why some people
have positive or negative beliefs like these about themselves. It
is possible to change, or better said to correct these beliefs by
using positive affirmations - by repeating the affirmation(s) the
neurons will keep firing and the appropriate neural pathway
will be formed and strengthened. When this new pathway
becomes strong enough the person will believe the new
statement as if it was true. Of course, this process is not that
simple as it sounds. In the next section we will consider the
difficulties in using affirmations, especially when using them
the classic way.
V. DIFFICULTIES IN USING AFFIRMATIONS THE CLASSIC
WAY
In the last section we concluded that the process of using
affirmations basically creates and strengthens new neural
pathways in a person's brain. After a while this new neural
SECTION

pathway becomes strong enough and automatically sets off
whenever an appropriate trigger is presented. However, there
are lots of problems in this process. Let us assume we have a
person who has the belief 'I am stupid' and she wants to change
this to 'I am smart' or 'I am intelligent'. First of all, if the
negative belief was formed in the person's early childhood
(which is very probable) then it has since influenced her life in
a big way. There were probably lots of situations in which this
belief was reinforced - practically every time this person did or
said something stupid, she would probably think of that event
as a new evidence that she really is stupid and the pathway
'containing' the negative belief would get strengthened. It is
important to notice that people who believe that are intelligent
also sometimes say or do something stupid, but they never
view that event as evidence that they are stupid. So it would
probably feel weird for a person who has the belief 'I am stupid'
to say 'I am smart' since she feels the opposite to be true. She
will have to repeat this statement over and over again, until her
brain 'gives up' and starts accepting that this might be true
(which practically means that a new pathway was created and
is now slowly strengthening). Another problem is that during
this process which takes time it is very probable that the person
will from time to time say or do something that might be
considered as stupid. Any time something like this happens this
will strengthen the old belief i.e. the old pathway and weaken
the new belief i.e. the new pathway. Basically there will be a
kind of war going on between the pathways and the person will
have to be persistent enough until the new pathway 'wins', i.e.
becomes much stronger than the old one. Actually we do not
know for sure if there are two pathways or it is maybe the same
pathway that is changing its structure - from the structure that
contains the belief 'I am stupid' to the structure that contains the
belief 'I am intelligent'. Anyway, whatever really happens, it
will obviously take time for the change to take place. This is
the reason why the 21 days time period that Coue talks about is
very often not enough. The time period of 21 days would
probably be enough if the person did not have any 'negative'
pathways and she only wanted to create a positive one. Most
people already have lots of negative stuff that they want to
change, or should we say reprogram, so the process will
demand much longer time period. For this reason lots of people
try affirmations and quit after couple of days or couple of
weeks. Very low percentage of people is able to be persistent
enough, since you have to keep repeating the affirmations even
when you don't see any improvement at all.
One way to overcome this in the past was using tape
recorders. You would record yourself speaking your
affirmations and then you could play the tape whenever you
wanted. Today various digital devices are used instead of tape
recorders. This is obviously simpler and easier than repeating
the affirmations yourself, especially for people that are not
persistent or patient. However this method also has a huge
drawback - the experts say that you have to say the affirmations
with a confident voice when recording them. You practically
have to be in a state of mind in which you believe the
affirmations to be true, since any doubt that could be sensed by
the brain would drastically weaken the affirmations' effect.
This is obviously a serious problem, since a person, as we have
already seen, does not yet believe the affirmations to be true,
especially in the beginning, when the 'negative' pathway is still
strong. This can be easily overcome by personal computers.
They can show the affirmations on the screen so all you have to
do is type your affirmations into a text file, use a proper
software program and just look at the screen. Using personal
computers in this way has 2 main advantages over using tape
recorders/mp3 players:
First, there is no need to record the affirmations, so the
doubt factor is practically eliminated. After the new
pathway has been created and the person starts to
believe a little bit in the new affirmations, she can also
record the affirmations and then listens to them, if she
prefers that way. Or she can both listen to the
affirmations and look at them. So, if nothing else,
using personal computers may dramatically help the
person to start the process.
Second, it is known that largest percentage of the
information we receive in our everyday life is from a
visual source. Also, it is estimated that more than 70%
of people are visual types, with much less percentage
of people who are audio or kinesthetic types. So, it
would be easier if you are looking at the affirmations
instead of hearing them, especially in the beginning.
We may conclude that using personal computers might be
much more appropriate for large percentage of people. And
even for the smaller percentage of people that are not visual
type of persons it will be helpful to see the affirmations in the
beginning and after a while they may record and listen to them.
Not to mention the fact that personal computers can also be
used for recording and playing audio files. In the next section a
computer application for affirmations, developed by the author
of this paper, will be described.
VI. THE APPLICATION
Fig. 1 shows the starting window of the application. The
user has to enter values for speed, 3D effect, size, type of
movement, number of repetitions of each affirmation, number
of repetitions of the whole file and name of the text file that
contains the affirmations. The last 3 values are pretty self-
explanatory. The field 'Speed' relates to the speed of playing
the affirmations. It represents the number of pixels that
determines for how much the affirmation will be moved
compared to its position in the previous frame. This means that
the user has practically number of options for the speed, from
very slow, almost no moving at all, to extremely fast, with lots
of medium values in between. The field '3D effect' adds
shadow to the letters that are shown which gives them a 3D
effect. Here the user can choose the degree of this effect by
entering a value from 0% to 100%. Obviously, 0 means no 3D
effect and 100 is the maximum 3D effect. Fig. 2 shows an
example where the same text is written with 3 different values
of the 3D effect factor: 20% (upper), 40% (middle) and 70%
(lower). The field 'Size' refers to the size of the letters of the
affirmations, again with many possible values, and the field
'Type of movement' has 8 possible values at the time of writing
this paper: left to right, right to left, top down, bottom up, top
left to bottom right, bottom right to top left, top right to bottom
left and bottom left to top right. Additional options are planned
to be added for this field, like going in a circle (clockwise and
counter clockwise), going in a spiral (clockwise and counter

clockwise combined with going from the center outside and
from the outside to the center), random, etc.
Figure 1. Starting window of the application
Figure 2. 3D effect
After clicking the 'Go' button the application opens and
reads the text file. When entering affirmations into this file the
user has to separate the affirmations by pressing the 'Enter' key.
The application reads the text file and shows the affirmations
with the selected speed, 3D effect factor, size and type of
movement, repeating each affirmation as many times as the
user has entered on the starting window in the field 'Repeat
each affirmation X times'. After all the affirmations from the
file have been shown, everything is repeated for the proper
amount of times defined by the value in the field 'Repeat the
whole file X times'. After that the starting window is shown
again. While the affirmations are playing the user has
additional options. First of all, by using the up and down
arrows keys, the user is able to increase or decrease the 3D
effect factor by 10%. The user can also dynamically increase or
decrease the speed by value of 10 by using the right and left
arrows keys. Pressing the space bar pauses/continues the
playing of the affirmations. Finally, pressing the 'Esc' key will
immediately stop the playing of the affirmations and the
starting window will be shown again.
We will now explain the main advantages of this
application compared to other similar applications. It is
important to say that in this paper we only consider
applications that show affirmations which are fully visible - we
do not take into consideration subliminal affirmations.
Subliminal affirmations are affirmations that are barely visible
when shown, or are very often practically invisible. The idea is
that they can not be seen by the conscious, but can be seen by
the subconscious mind. This type of affirmations is out of
scope of this paper and will probably be subject of future work.
So, the main drawback in all the other applications which show
affirmations that are fully visible, that the author of this paper
has tried, for example like [14, 15, 16], is that the affirmations
are just flashed on the screen. Each affirmation is static and the
user can only change the amount of time for how long each
affirmation is shown. We should say that these applications do
have some options that are not yet present in our application,
like choosing various fonts types and colors (all these are
planned to be included in our application in the near future),
but the important thing is that the affirmations are static. In our
application, as already explained, the affirmations are moving
while being shown. It is obvious that the implemented types of
movement, as well as the new ones that will be available in the
near future, combined with the 3D effect (which is a feature
that is also absent in other similar applications), together with
the various values for size and speed makes our application
much more useful. If we add to that the feature to dynamically
change the speed and the 3D effect (also another feature that
other similar applications do not possess - they practically do
not have the possibility to dynamically change any parameter),
we can easily conclude that our application not only has greater
number of valuable options, but is also more user friendly than
other similar applications. All these different features give our
application lots of variety, which has double impact:
First of all, the application has much higher potential to
make greater impression on the user's brain, which
should shorten the number of repetitions needed for
strengthening the neural pathways compared to static
two-dimensional text. This practically means
shortening the time needed before the affirmations start
'working'.
Second, with static affirmations it will not take a long
time before the user gets bored and stops using the
application, which basically means stopping the
positive change taking place inside her brain. With
several types of movement that have many speed
values and many 3D effect values it will take much
longer time before the user gets bored, which means
extension of the time period in which there is a positive
change inside the user's brain.
The two bullet points above means that not only will the
user sooner notice positive changes but she will also be
'exposed' to these positive changes for a longer time. From a
practical point of view, for a person who wishes to change a
negative belief she has, the first bullet point is more important.
The reason for this is the fact that very often people believe that
'it is just the way I am' and 'nothing can be done'. So, once a
person notices the positive changes in her everyday life and
concludes that the affirmations work, she will naturally be
eager to keep using the application, and will probably not stop
until she changes everything she wishes to change.

- 511 -
Another important thing should be mentioned. Since many
people get bored easily, even if some application has the same
options as other applications, it can still be valuable since if the
application has anything different, it will be interesting, at least
for a while (and each application must have something
different compared to other applications even if it basically
does not offer anything new). That means that for some people
having several applications might be 'the answer' - when one
application becomes boring they can change to using another
one, when that one becomes boring, they can change to using
another one, etc. and all the while the positive changes in their
brain are taking place, which is the purpose of existence of
such applications. This means that any new application that has
anything different is, as the matter of fact, valuable. If it posses
several important new features on top of that, that surely cannot
be a miss.
VII. CONCLUSION
One of the most frequently used techniques in self-
development is doing affirmations. Practically there is no self-
improvement guru today that has not used affirmations or that
is not recommending people to use affirmations to improve
their life. In this paper we saw the origins of affirmations and
their various uses in several life areas - confidence, health and
financial situation. We also saw that the scientific explanation
about how and why affirmations work may be found in
neuroscience. Each time a person says an affirmation a proper
neural pathway is being strengthened. If the person repeats the
affirmations enough number of times, the neural pathway will
become strong enough and the person will 'accept' the
affirmation as reality. Then we exposed the difficulties and
challenges in using the affirmations the classic way and saw
how using personal computers can transcend these difficulties
and challenges. Finally we saw a description of a computer
application, with several important advantages compared to
similar applications, which alleviates the process of doing
affirmations and accelerates the proper progression. We can
conclude that using personal computers can indeed accelerate
the positive changes in the process of doing affirmations and
autosuggestions. This can be especially useful for people who
would otherwise quit doing affirmations when doing them just
the classic way. For those people using applications such as the
one described in this paper may be the critical factor that helps
them succeed and reach their goals.

Article
Investigates whether information specialists, particulalry business information professionals, need additional qualifications, such as an MBA, and recounts the author’s experience of choosing the MBA as being the most appropriate qualification for expanding her earlier skills, which were technically focused. Notes the strategy used to choose which MBA to study for (finally choosing UK’s Cranfield), noting what she expected to gain from the process and what she actually gained in practice. Lists the key skills learned from the MBA process: working effectively in a team; understanding how people work; time management and delegation; building a framework for analysing problems; questioning assumptions; and using lateral thinking processes. Concludes that one of the key post-MBA goals, achieving a better job, was achieved in practice and involved a job with KPMG Management Consultancy, working directly for the UK Senior Partner: a job which would not have been attainable without an MBA. Concludes that the combination of information management skills and management/business skills is likely to be a valuable one in a future where knowledge management is becoming increasingly important.
