Justice is tested by agreement. If men disagree then nothing is just. That is why the constitutional contractarian is obliged to put consultative procedures first. Equity is inseparable from consent. God has been dead for a century. Democracy is all that remains: ‘A “fair rule” is one that is agreed to by the players in advance of play itself, before the particularized positions of the players come to be identified. Note carefully what this definition says: A rule is fair if players agree to it. It does not say that players agree because a rule is fair’ (CW XVII, 313).

What happens when things go wrong? Retail sales explanations and their effects

Data were collected from a sample of consumers and analyzed with the use of structural-equation modeling. The findings indicate that explanation adequacy is influenced by the style and content of the explanation and the timeliness of an organization's reaction. However, explanation adequacy appears to only influence the final perceptions (indirectly) of the severity of the incident and emotional reaction to it, and the perceptions of the extent of the justice of the resolution and the assignment of blame to external factors were found to be intervening variables. The results also indicated that the assignment of blame to internal factors was unrelated to the adequacy of an explanation, but did influence emotional reactions and the perceived severity of the incident. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

[Show full abstract] održanje zdravlja čovječanstva. Usva-jajući definiciju zdravlja ustanovljenu od Svjetske zdravstvene organizacije prema kojoj je zdravlje "ne samo odsutnost bo-lesti i nemoći već i cjelovito fizičko, men-talno i socijalno blagostanje", postajemo svjesni ozbiljnosti problema pred kojim se nalazi suvremeni čovjek (1). Život u materijalnom blagostanju rezultirao je povećanim unosom hrane, što je uz hipo-kineziju proizvelo višak energije koja se skladišti u organizmu u obliku masnog tkiva. Nedostatak aktivnosti omogućuje ranu atrofiju i disfunkciju nekih organa, a sve to predstavlja platformu za razvoj niza bolesti suvremenog čovjeka, od ko-jih su neke na vrhu ljestvice smrtnosti. Evidentni podaci o problemima nastalim radi inaktiviteta, navode znanstvenike koji se bave ovom problematikom na pretpostavku da će nedostatna tjelesna aktivnost biti jedan od najvećih, pa čak i najveći problem za održavanje zdravlja čovjeka u 21. stoljeću (2). I tako Juvenalova mens sana in cor-pore sano nakon skoro dva tisućljeća po-staje sve primjerenija suvremenom nači-nu življenja. Navedeni problemi odnose se na generacije odraslih ljudi u čijem su odrastanju bile prisutne igre s mnogo kretanja, a televizijski program nije bio toliko "bogat" i raznovrstan kao danas. Današnja djeca značajno više vremena provode pred televizorom, a i igre su im značajno vezane za inaktivitet (računalo, playstation, gameboy…). Time se ugro-žava zdravstveni status već od najranijih dana, pa je potpuno jasno zašto mnogi autori predlažu stvaranje navika za tje-lesnim vježbanjem već od ranog djetinj-stva (3). Sve navedeno dovodi sportsku aktivnost u područje društveno interesne i veoma značajne djelatnosti. "Bavljenje sportom je ljudsko pravo" i ugrađeno je u temeljna načela olimpizma pri čemu "svakom pojedincu mora biti omoguće-no bavljenje sportom, bez diskriminaci-je bilo koje vrste i u olimpijskom duhu, što zahtijeva obostrano razumijevanje, prijateljstvo, solidarnost i fair play" (4). Olimpijska povelja temeljnica je svih dokumenata sportskih organizacija Hr-vatske na čelu s Hrvatskim olimpijskim odborom. Iz toga slijedi opravdano oče-kivanje da posljedice bavljenja sportom mogu biti samo poželjne i pozitivne.

How Does the Difference Principle Make a Difference?

The paper examines the relationship between the two parts of Rawls’ second principle of justice. More specifically, it explores the ways in which the Difference Principle (DP) may constrain the range of acceptable social arrangements in light of the stated lexical priority of the requirement of fair equality of opportunity (FEO) over the DP. The paper discusses two possibilities. First, it ... [Show full abstract] examines the role the DP may play within an institutional scheme that satisfies the requirement of FEO. Second, it discusses the role the principle may play in selecting among different institutional schemes that satisfy FEO. The paper argues that the DP has an important role only if there is a range of institutional arrangements that are equivalent from the point of view of FEO but non-equivalent from the point of view of the DP. Next, it explores the possible sources of the variation among the different FEO-equivalent institutional schemes, and argues that on the most satisfactory reading of the requirement of FEO, there will not be much variation that is relevant from the point of view of the DP. The paper concludes that the role of the Difference Principle is at best very limited in constraining the range of social arrangements that are acceptable from the point of view of justice.
