The association of Jaguar with motorsport success goes back to the company’s roots in Blackpool, in the era of the Swallow Sidecar, and, continues today in the considerably more expensive and sophisticated World of Formula 1 Grand Prix. Not only dramatically more expensive but with the ‘small’ advantage that at least some of the expense is offset by contributions from sources other than the company, in this case Ford Motor Company of Dearborn, USA.

Laying order, hatching asynchrony and nestling body mass in Tree Swallows Tachycineta bicolor

We studied the reproductive biology of a box-nesting population of Tree Swallows Tachycineta bicolor in southeastern Wisconsin, USA. We were interested particularly in the relationship between laying order and hatching order and the extent to which each was a predictor of nestling body mass. [Show full abstract] related to nestling mass at 4 days of age and to a lesser extent at 12 days of age. In addition, we investigated the effects of natural variation in hatching asynchrony. Hatching asynchrony was positively related to the range of nestling body masses within a brood at days 4 and 12. The probability that brood reduction occurred was also positively related to the degree of hatching asynchrony, though this effect was significant only at day 4. Our results suggest that laying order and hatching order have their greatest effects on nestling Tree Swallows early in the nestling period.

The Bac(chus) experiment: blood alcohol concentrations after wine tasting

Blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) were measured in ten volunteers after a wine tast-ing event with and without the swallowing of 15 mL of each wine. The findings from the clinical evaluation provide information about a patient’s functional feeding and swallowing behaviors and determine the need for therapeutic intervention and/or additional instrumental testing. Patients at risk for dysphagia, and thus in need of a clinical evaluation, can be determined from screening. This chapter will describe each aspect of the clinical evaluation and screening and provide the value of each.

Utility of a Clinical Swallowing Exam for Understanding Swallowing Physiology

A clinical swallowing examination (CSE) is generally believed to be inadequate for making judgments regarding swallowing physiology compared to objective assessments. A large volume of studies has heavily focused on identifying aspiration using a CSE and research addressing physiologic information gathered from a CSE is sparse. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of the CSE for ... [Show full abstract] assessing physiology compared to videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS). Data were derived from a prior investigation of sixty adult patients post-stroke tested with CSE and VFSS. The CSE included an examination of historical measures, oral motor/speech/voice, and trial swallows. The VFSS consisted of swallows of controlled portions of thin, thick, puree, and solid boluses. Previous results from these patients demonstrated significant accuracy in making binary estimates of aspiration and the presence of dysphagia. This analysis of data focused on physiologic measures, as well as overall dysphagia severity and diet recommendations. Significant associations between CSE and VFSS ratings were observed for hyolaryngeal elevation, overall swallowing severity, and diet recommendations. These findings were specific for certain bolus consistencies. These data suggest that the CSE may not provide significant physiological information other than hyolaryngeal excursion. This does not preclude the fact that the CSE is important in providing substantial information about overall dysphagia severity. It appears that the CSE is more powerful than simply a “screening” tool. More prospective research designs are warranted to substantiate the strengths of the CSE.

Secondary peristalsis is uncommon but may be important during sleep when swallowing is relatively suppressed. Some patients with reflux disease, particularly those with severe esophagitis, exhibit impaired esophageal responses to reflux. It is likely that this impairment prolongs acid clearance and may also influence the proximal extent of the refluxate within the esophageal body.

Uma das formas de avaliar a PC em termos de dificuldades motoras é através da escala de Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), que classifica os indivíduos de acordo com 5 níveis de mobilidade, sendo que no nível I existe uma marcha autónoma e no nível V os indivíduos são transportados em cadeira de rodas, estando dependentes de terceiros para qualquer atividade da vida diária. Objetivo: Avaliar a relação entre o nível de GMFCS e a DOF em indivíduos com PC. Metodologia: Foi aplicado um inquérito a uma amostra de 44 indivíduos com idades compreendidas entre os 5 e os 64 anos com diagnóstico clínico de PC, no qual se registou o género, a idade, o nível de GMFCS, dificuldades sentidas na deglutição de líquidos e o desempenho na deglutição. Pediu-se a cada um dos indivíduos que ingerisse 30 mL de água espessada com diferentes consistências, de acordo com a nomenclatura da International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative. O desempenho na deglutição para cada consistência foi classificado utilizando uma versão adaptada da escala do Water Swallow Test, de forma a concluir quais as consistências que permitiam uma maior segurança na deglutição.

[Show full abstract] typical Mach 4 cruising inlet, and the unsteady computation method with a dynamic Chimera grid technique is applied to simulate the rotating process of the inlet cowl. The change characteristics of the restarted performance at different rotating angle amplitude of the inlet cowl are investigated systematically. The numerical results reveal that the unstarted status of this typical inlet induced by the effect of high backpressure failed to restart if the inlet cowl rotating angle amplitude is under a small critical value, which is called lower critical angle. The inlet could restart if the cowl rotating angle amplitude is a little larger than the lower critical angle, and the flow may rapidly go to a steady condition after the inlet cowl returns to the design position. However, the performance of the restarted inlet is still worse than the design condition, because of the existence of an stable separation bubble on its shoulder, even if the inlet cowl stops rotating. The separation bubble becomes shrunk with an increasing the cowl rotating angle amplitude. When the inlet cowl rotating angle amplitude reaches a large critical value which is called upper critical angle, the separation bubble disappears, and all the separation is swallowed by the mean flow. Therefore the design performance of the inlet can be recovered, which means that the flow mass capture coefficient, total pressure recovery coefficient, drag and the outlet Mach number go back to the design level. It also shows that within the range of the lower and upper critical angles, the larger the rotating angle amplitude is, the more rapidly the separation bubble reaches stable state.
