This book started life as an attempt to think about a tradition of political freedom that, supposedly, had no place in the modern world. As I finished the book, it occurred to me that the title ‘Liberty after Liberalism’, while it might refer to a reconstructed and revised form of this ancient liberty, might just as well refer to a period in the history of the West in which there is hardly any liberty at all. Nonetheless, I have refrained from placing a question mark after the title because it is my belief that although these are dark times for political freedom there are always possibilities for its realization.

Shamir goes on to argue that cinematic thought experiments, which are experienced onscreen, are dramatically different from traditional thought experiments, which take place in our imagination. This process begins to establish that the evolution of thought experiments as cinematic entities offers an unprecedented possibility for philosophy.
