The story of Europe’s languages begins in silence. For most of its human history, the continent’s inhabitants did not possess writing technology. It is nearly impossible to know anything about their languages, even when we can build up a fair picture of what sort of lives they led.

Relativa restritiva em perspectiva construcional

Este trabalho investiga a oração relativa restritiva finita em perspectiva construcional. Trata-se de uma pesquisa quali-quantitativa cujos dados empíricos provêm dos corpora Projeto História do Português Brasileiro e Discurso & Gramática. Os resultados revelam que a construção relativa restritiva finita sanciona três padrões microconstrucionais distintos aos quais estão relacionados fatores cognitivos, a exemplo de economia de esforço, e aspectos interacionais, como demandas por maior clareza, expressividade e usos mais ou menos monitorados da língua.

Para isso, foram selecionados os diálogos mais representativos das relações de poder entre as referidas personagens e empreendida a análise da materialidade linguística por uma perspectiva discursiva, centrada no estudo das relações entre linguagem, sujeito e história, que considera as condições de produção e os efeitos de sentido. Ressalta-se, porém, não ser a intenção analisar a qualidade da atividade tradutória, mas, sim, observar como se dá a construção de efeitos de sentido relacionados às relações de poder de um idioma para outro.

Human language can be signed or spoken. Thus, we should only consider as fundamental those properties of language that hold in both of these equipotential modalities. Modality-specific properties of either sign or speech must instead be attributed to the interaction of the linguistic system with the systems of production and perception. This chapter explores both the modality-independent and the ... [Show full abstract] modality-dependent properties of syntactic categorization in sign languages. Categorization of linguistic expressions and the use of categorical properties to determine syntactic distribution and guide syntactic structure building appear to be modality-independent properties of language, as are the broad categorical divisions attested (e.g., lexical vs. functional, noun vs. verb). When the examination turns to fine-grained categorical or sub-categorical distinctions and the actual morpho-syntactic patterns that distinguish these categories within a given language or class of languages, however, certain patterns of modality-dependence do emerge, such as the sign language preference for simultaneous (vs. sequential) structure. Nevertheless, as in other areas of language study, the patterns attested in syntactic categorization in sign languages overlap significantly with those documented in spoken languages. This provides further support for the proposal that the properties of human language are not primarily driven by the modality of transmission but are only secondarily beholden to it.

The effects of writing mode and computer ability on L2 test-takers' essay characteristics and scores

This exploratory study examined the effects of writing mode (computer vs. paper) and computer ability on the scores and linguistic characteristics of essays written in response to a second-language (L2) writing test. Each of 97 test-takers, with two levels of English language proficiency (ELP; low vs. high) and two levels of keyboarding skills (low vs. high,) responded to two equivalent writing ... [Show full abstract] tasks, one on paper and one on the computer. Test-takers' written responses were then marked holistically and analysed in terms of various writing features. The findings indicated that writing mode had significant effects on measures of fluency, lexical complexity, cohesion, and content, but not writing scores. Keyboarding skills had significant, but small, effects on measures of fluency, local cohesion, and writing scores, while ELP had significant, large effects on writing scores and measures of fluency, accuracy, and lexical complexity. Overall, the findings suggest that writing mode and keyboarding skills do not seem to seriously affect performance on computer-based L2 writing tests perhaps because of the growing familiarity and proficiency of the target population with using computers to write in English.

Therefore, the calculation on result is not a fuzzy number, but a definite value which can sort multi-attribute decision-making programs precisely and obtain a relatively satisfactory result which will have more practical value.
