Ch 2 The Old Sciences of Religion

Authors:
  • Metanexus Institute

Abstract

Before we examine the new sciences of religion, we need to take a quick survey of the old sciences of religion that arose in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By doing so, we will come to recognize the challenges of creating any kind of science of religion. Along the way, we will discover certain patterns of thought and concepts that persist in our contemporary approaches to explaining and understanding religious and spiritual phenomena.

... The term religion encompasses not only the familiar Christian forms but also is appropriately used more broadly "to designate a bounded belief system and set of practices, as in the religions of the Greeks, Romans, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Chinese, and others." 38 Recognizing that some genuine religions go so far as to deny their own religious character, Grassie describes a common worship in modern times of a "God-by-whatever name." Ironically, it is possible to have a "religion of no religion." ...

William James wrote that the life of religion "consists of the belief that there is an unseen order, and that our supreme good lies in harmoniously adjusting ourselves thereto." Naturalism organizes our experiences of the universe within a science-grounded philosophical and/or religious framework aligning it with what is supremely good for our lives. This article describes a science-grounded specific "Framework of Spirituality" identifying part of this unseen order that opens a "spiritual core" within persons as a source of healing and happiness. A cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) expanded process shows how experiences of human worth and dignity are keys to this new awareness and provides speculation for a brain function and evolutionary explanation. Details of this knowledge are related to various perspectives and authors of naturalism-scientific, religious, ecstatic, and ecological-to contribute to a future direction for the understanding , development, and further expression of naturalism.

In this book, Freud applies some of his psychoanalytic theories to society and describes the makeup of civilization. In addition to an infrastructure, a high emphasis on ideas is crucial to civilization. A primary element of civilization can also be found in the regulation of social relationships. The majority of a society decides what is "right" and establishes laws and social norms imposed over the will of the individual. Part of this process involves the individual limiting his or her desires, renouncing aspects of his or her instinct. Specifically, Freud mentions the regulation of sexual desires as part of the regimentation that happens in a civilization.

Ludwig Feuerbach (1804–72), the German philosopher and a founding member of the Young Hegelians, a group of radical thinkers influenced by G. W. F. Hegel (1770–1831), was an outspoken critic of religion, and the 1841 publication of this work established his reputation. In the first part of the book he examines what he calls the 'anthropological essence' of religion, and in the second he looks at its 'false or theological essence', arguing that the idea of God is a manifestation of human consciousness. These ideas provoked strong reactions in Germany, and soon other European intellectuals wanted to read Feuerbach's book. The 1843 second edition was translated by Marian Evans (1819–80) – who would become better known by her pen name of George Eliot – and published in Britain in 1854. Evans was influenced by Feuerbach's work, and many of his humanist ideas about religion are reflected in her novels.

First published in 1896, this two-volume history of the conflict between theology and science quickly became a landmark text. It was widely recognised, along with John William Draper's History of the Conflict between Religion and Science, as a defining study of the relationship between religion and science. A distinguished educator, scholar and writer, Andrew Dickson White was the first president of Cornell University. White held the view that religion was historically opposed to progress in the field of science. He argued that any interference on the part of religion in science had always proved disastrous, whereas scientific investigation, no matter how seemingly damaging to religion, had always resulted in the highest good. A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom is the culmination of thirty years of White's research, publication and lectures on the subject. Volume two discusses medicine, insanity, mythology, political economy and comparative philology.

What is the role of scientists in society? What should we think when they talk about more than just science? Mary Midgley discusses the high spiritual ambitions which tend to gather around the notion of science.
