Abstract

To enhance California Polytechnic State University’s Mechanical Engineering program, Dr. Schuster has sponsored Brandon Younger, Lauren Romero, and Carlos Padilla to design and develop a new lab for students in the Intermediate Design class to test real mechanical components. This report discusses the background and ideation process that lead to the development of the Educational Mechanical Breadboard for Transmission System Components (Machine Components Test). Additionally, detailed drawings, 3D modeling, testing plans, and analysis are included to show how the Machine Components Test design will work and be validated.

This thesis introduces the mechanical breadboard as a learning / development tool and details the creation of one concept. It begins with a review of the state of the art for mechanical breadboards to include commercial and academic developments and products. It defines what a mechanical breadboard is for this research, what the customer needs are, and what critical functions the breadboard should be able to prototype. Following this analysis, a development team created a new novel structural system for a mechanical breadboard as the research indicated these components were both important to the overall system and had a great opportunity for innovation and improvement. The solution developed is based on node and frame member structural system that allows multiple degrees of freedom in the structural layout. The node is the key component of the structural system and utilizes a three section design to give multiple degrees of freedom and attachment points.
Conference Paper
Hands-on, design-oriented experiences, realistically connected to future careers, may be used to increase engineering graduation rates. This content has been shown to both enhance the educational experience and increase student retention rates. While relevant topics may be found in each engineering discipline, relatively few demonstrate multidisciplinary appeal and a realistic future career connection. At the University of Texas at Tyler, with support from the National Science Foundation, a process control systems theme propagates through each academic level. The theme is relevant to many disciplines including agricultural, chemical, electrical, mechanical, and petroleum engineering. A proof of concept system, consisting of hardware components, associated hands-on activities and computer-based accessories will be described. Although not completely seamless, the integration of the theme into an existing mechanical engineering curriculum will be presented, along with survey data collected from participating students. Lessons learned are included, along with a description of a CD-based resource guide
