ABSTRACT
A new species of the crab spider Pharta tangi sp. nov. (male
and female) from Guizhou province in China is described.
Photos of body and copulatory organs as well as dierence
comparison between the new and closely related species are
given. Locality map is also provided.
Introduction
Pharta is a poorly known genus relatively although it was revised by Benjamin
(2011). Up to now, only eight species have been described from South-East Asia
(World Spider Catalog 2016). e type species P. bimaculata was reported by
orell in 1891, P. brevipalpus was originally described as Epidius brevipalpus
(Simon 1903). P. gongshan, P. nigra, and P. tengchong were originally placed in
the genus Sanmenia (Yang et al. 2006; Tang et al. 2009). Pharta was revised by
Benjamin (2011). ree members were added by Sen et al. (2012) and Benjamin
(2014). So far, two species were described from China: P. gongshan and P. tengchong.
While examining the specimens collected from Fanjingshan National Nature
Reserve (Guizhou province, southwest China), a new species of genus Pharta
was recognized. Diagnosis and description of body and copulatory organs of the
species are given in this paper.
Material and methods
All specimens were xed in 75% ethanol. Color photos were taken with a Canon
PowerShot G12 digital camera mounted on an Olympus SZX16. Compound focus
images were generated using Helicon Focus soware (3.10).
All measurements were given in millimeters. Leg measurements are giving as:
total length (femur, patella+tibia, metatarsus, tarsus). Abbreviations used are as

Etymology: e specic name is in honor of Doctor Guo Tang, an arachnological
scholar on omisidae of China.
Diagnosis: e male of the new species is similar to P. koponeni Benjamin 2014
in having similar shapes of ventral tibial apophysis and conductor, but can be dis-
tinguished from the latter by: (1) length of palp tibia about 1.5times longer than
its width (Figures 1(C–E), 2(A–B)) versus about as long as wide in P. koponeni;
(2) ventral tibial apophysis curved slightly at middle part in ventral view (Figures
1(C), 2(B)) versus without curved in P. koponeni; and (3) conductor located in
alveolus, not extended beyond the promargin of cymbium in ventral view (Figures
1(C), 2(B)) versus part of conductor beyond the pro-margin of cymbium in P.
koponeni. e female of the new species is similar to P. gongshan, but can be dis-
tinguished from the latter by: (1) atrial intermediate margin clear (Figures 1(F),
2(C)) versus indistinct in P. gongshan; (2) copulatory openings invisible versus
visible in P. gongshan; and (3) fertilization ducts positioned transversally (Figure
2(D)) versus stretching longitudinally in P. gongshan.

wider than long, the terminal with bristles. Sternum almost cordiform, covered
with yellow hairs. Legs yellow to yellowish brown, trochanters, coxae, and femurs
lightly pale. Dorsum of abdomen (Figure 1(A)) oval, scattered with small white
patches, anterior middle part with three pairs of large white patches, median area

Collections of thomisid spiders by amateur and professional arachnologists in China have led to the discovery of some interesting crab spiders (Thomisidae). Two new species in two genera of thomisid spiders are described and illustrated with photographs and SEMs: Pharta xizang Liu & Yao, sp. nov. (♀) and Stephanopis qiong Liu & Yao, sp. nov. (♀). The previously unknown males of Borboropactus longidens Tang & Li, 2010 and Stephanopis xiangzhouica Liu, 2022 were also collected and are described for the first time. The genus Borboropactus Simon, 1884 is reported for the first time from Vietnam. The new Stephanopis species is also recorded for only the second time from the Asian mainland. Distributions of all these species are mapped.

Tmarus Simon, 1875 is a relatively large spider genus, currently includes 227 species distributed worldwide. Fanjing Mountain Nature Reserve is one of China’s most biodiverse regions. However, Tmarus can be regarded as being poorly represented in Fanjing Mountain, with only one species having been recorded so far: T. fanjing Yang & Yu, 2022. Recently, various expeditions to Fanjing Mountain Nature Reserve were carried out by the authors. In this paper, two Tmarus species were brought to light by those expeditions: T. fanjing Yang & Yu, 2022 and T. circinalis Song & Chai, 1990. T. fanjing is redescribed, based on new material and the female is described and illustrated for the first time. The supplementary micrographs of T. circinalis are given for the first time. The DNA barcodes and a distribution map of both species are provided for future use.

The higher-level phylogenetic relationships of crab spiders (Thomisidae) are studied from morphological data. 33 taxa are coded for 74 characters (53 binary and 21 multistate). Several analyses using equal, successive and implied weights were carried out. The most parsimonious tree obtained by analysis with successive and implied weights is put forward as the preferred hypothesis of thomisid relationships (length 222 steps, CI 0.74, RI 0.83). Thomisidae emerge monophyletic in all analyses, supported by four unambiguous synapomorphies. It is now apparent that thomisid taxa have been mostly defined on the basis of plesiomorphic character states. A number of taxonomic changes, including the description of new taxa are proposed and the evolution of diverse behaviors of thomisids is studied in light of the new phylogenetic result. Color change behavior evolved once within the family, but eye arrangement patterns of the median ocular quadrangle, thought to be diagnostic for many genera, evolved as much as 10 times independently. The following new species are described: Borboropactus nyerere sp. nov.,Cebrenninus srivijaya sp. nov., Geraesta lehtineni sp. nov. and Geraesta mkwawa sp. nov. The following new generic synonymies are proposed: Bucranium O. P.-Cambridge, 1881 = Aphantochilus O. P.-Cambridge, 1870; Sanmenia Song and Kim, 1992 = Pharta Thorell, 1891 and Cupa Strand, 1906 = Epidius Thorell, 1877. The following species are synonymized: Regillus divergens Hogg, 1914 and Borboropactus hainanus Song, 1993 = Borboropactus bituberculatus Simon, 1884 syn. nov., Epidius ganxiensis (Yin, Peng & Kim, 1999) = Epidius rubropictus Simon, 1909 syn. nov., Geraesta bilobata Simon, 1897 = Geraesta hirta Simon, 1889 syn. nov., Sanmenia kohi Ono, 1995 = Pharta bimaculata Thorell, 1891 syn. nov. and Sanmenia zhengi (Ono & Song, 1986) = Pharta brevipalpus (Simon, 1903) syn. nov. The following new combinations are proposed: Aphantochilus taurifrons (O. P.-Cambridge, 1881) comb. nov., Epidius typicus (Bösenberg & Strand, 1906) comb. nov., Pharta brevipalpus (Simon, 1903) comb. nov., Pharta gongshan (Yang, Zhu and Song, 2006) comb. nov., Pharta nigra (Tang, Griswold & Peng, 2009) comb. nov. and Pharta tengchong (Tang, Griswold & Yin, 2009) comb. nov.
