In response to the mounting request for sustainable supply chains, companies need to assess the environmental performance of their operations and products. Recent studies within the field of Information Systems (IS) argue that information systems can forge supply chain sustainability by monitoring a firm's environmental performance. The latter requires a specific type of Information Systems, namely environmental performance monitoring systems, hence our study focuses on such systems and addresses the challenge of designing them. That is, through a design science approach, we capture the industrial and informational requirements of environmental performance monitoring in the supply chain context and derive a conceptual architectural framework that is generic in the sense of including all the basic components that comprise such systems. To establish the applicability of our architectural framework, we instantiate it for two cases of environmental performance monitoring systems that are then deployed under different settings. We conclude by proposing a set of design propositions and discuss their validity and importance in relation to a firm's level of interoperability.

The field of Green IS research seeks to address the environmental challenges of our rapidly growing economy. For example, IS-based solutions can provide valuable tools for reducing emissions and mitigating waste. Developing such novel sustainable IS artifacts falls in the domain of Design Science Research. The Design Science Research paradigm helps design, develop, improve and implement IS to solve prevailing problems or challenges. Thus, developing novel sustainable artifacts falls in the intersection of Green IS and Design Science Research. We analyze the interconnected relationship between Design Science Research and Green IS by providing a deeper understanding of current research knowledge and opportunities at the intersection of these two important IS topics. Based on these findings, we present five directions for future research which aim to facilitate further contributions to theoretical knowledge, Design Science Research, and sustainable solution development in the field of Green IS.
Onlice PDF: The purpose of this paper is to determine the status quo of research on applications of information and communication technology (ICT) in green logistics (GL) and offer recommendations for future research. We determine that research about political interaction is needed to design new standards and regulations for GL. We also recommend that this work be extended by behavioural research to both identify factors that influence society’s sustainable behaviour and determine whether the current digitisation of society leads to more sustainable transport. In addition, this paper provides an overview of types of software applications that may be beneficial to GL. These benefits usually relate to the strategic management of freight transport and supply chains and the provision of software for executing or monitoring passenger transport. As such, further research on sustainability measures is also needed to identify important sustainable indicators in transport. Existing reviews mostly concentrate on either a specific logistics area or supply chain management; as far as we are aware, no studies focus on the use of ICT in GL at a superordinate level. This paper’s holistic evaluation of the state of research in this underexplored area and its propositions for future research help to fill this gap in the literature.
