Earlier chapters of this book have concentrated on individual identities and selves, and on issues closest to individual and private concerns. In a sense, we have examined some of the ‘micro-aspects’ of social life, although always with reference to and in the context of wider social structures. [Show full abstract] institutions are both constructed by and contribute to social identities and roles, and that the organisational structures in which work takes place are part of social structures that powerfully affect how individuals live their lives. In this chapter we shall begin to examine more explicitly some of the ways in which these wider social structures are conceptualised, and how such conceptualisations are part of our identities and, as such, construct and constrain us. Concepts such as community, nation, state, citizen and ethnicity are simply abstract ideas ‘out there’ — they are social constructs, part of how we understand our own identities and how others perceive and treat us.

Dessa maneira objetivamos, a partir da leitura de Theodor Adorno (2003), do Prefácio Interessantíssimo e do Manifesto Pau-Brasil, discutir o caráter social que os autores Mário e Oswald de Andrade propõem e apresentam nas obras Paulicéia Desvairada e Pau-Brasil. Abstract: Brazilian Modernism was one of the most significant periods of artistic creation in Brazil. During this period writers, painters and other artists began to think of Brazil in ways that represented the Brazilian way of life as modified by industrialization. In order to do this, it was necessary for artists to consider the social aspects present in early modernity. Based on Theordor Adorno´s (2003) Prefácio Interessantíssimo and Manifesto Pau-Brasil, this article discusses the social aspects that the authors Mario e Oswald de Andrade propose and present in their books Paulicéia Desvairada and Pau-Brasil.
