Eugenics is a form of racism that masquerades as science. Science has repeatedly demonstrated that the concept of race is a destructive myth. Catastrophically flawed as such a perspective may be, new generations of advocates persist in trying to breathe life into age-old eugenicist superstitions. Legitimate scientific organizations, such as the US Census Bureau and the American Sociological Association, have perpetuated eugenicist irrationality by unscientifically conflating race and ethnicity. Responsible scientists should embrace the American Anthropological Associations more rational treatment of race and take all necessary steps to destroy the myth of race here and now. Full stop.

The demography of difference: Shifting trends of racial diversity and interracial marriage 1960-1990

Does a greater degree of racial diversity lead to greater interracial contact over time for all racial groups? The two prevailing theoretical models of interracial contact, assimilation and racial stratification, purport two opposing relationships between diversity and interracial contact. [Show full abstract] 1988] Z index of intermarriage, we explore national, regional, and state-specific levels of racial diversity and White–non-White interracial marriage in 1960, 1970, 1980, and 1990 using Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) census data, for four racial groups, to describe overall levels of interracial contact vis-à-vis opportunities for interracial contact. We find that increasing contact does not always coincide with increasing marriage. Blacks, and to a far greater degree, American Indians show increases in intermarriage within a context of greater racial diversity. Asians and Hispanic trends are far more variable. In support of the racial stratification model that places the social construction of race as primarily determining the possibilities of contact, we interpret these trends in light of the ways that race structures interactions over time.

Census 1981--Question on Racial and Ethnic Origin. Briefing Paper

The British Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) is considering the inclusion of a question on race and ethnic origin in the 1981 census of Great Britain. This paper addresses the importance of obtaining statistical data on minority groups and examines some of the arguments and problems likely to be raised over the issue of including such a question in the census. [Show full abstract] discrimination in employment and housing in Britain are reviewed, and the inadequacy of available information for forming and implementing anti-discrimination policy is cited. Objections raised by politicians in opposition to the census question on race/ethnicity are reviewed and contested. It is pointed out that the alternatives suggested by the OPCS will not provide useful information. Some features of ethnicity, descent, and religion which might influence the wording of a census question are discussed. Policies of other countries in regard to census data on race, language, religion, and country of birth are briefly considered. A number of suggestions are offered on how questions which are simultaneously useful and non-discriminatory could be developed. A discussion of the use of the word "race" is appended to the paper. Race Differences in Fertility: A Note on their Estimation in Brazil

A recently published estimate of differential “racial” fertility in Brazil concludes that fertility is significantly higher among the white than among the black population. However, the problems of defining racial categories in Brazil are great, if not insuperable, and it may be shown that the “racial” distribution of the population varied widely between the census of 1940 and that of 1950, owing ... The calculation of fertility on the basis of such “racial” categories is therefore suspect, while differences in fertility based upon two categories only, white and non-white, are much smaller. It is suggested that differences in infant mortality, higher among non-whites than whites, account for such fertility differences as persist, and that since infant mortality is lower in urban and more economically developed areas, the evidence so far available points to a progressive “darkening” of the Brazilian population accompanying economic development, and not to the “bleaching” foreseen by Professor Lynn Smith.
