Abstract

A brief history of both nomenclature and taxonomy of ‘Callithamnion codii’ is presented. From the nomenclatural point of view, the implications deriving from considering it as validly published or not are presented. From the taxonomic point of view, the conspecificity of Colaconema codii and Colaconema caespitosum is reaffirmed.

A detailed collection of intertidal and subtidal marine macroalgal species from the Cape Hangklip area, a site centrally located in the south coast/west coast overlap, yielded a list of 199 taxa (27 Chlorophyta, 25 Phaeophyta, 147 Rhodophyta). The list of taxa included four new records for southern Africa (Aphanocladia cf. skottsbergii, Audouinella endophytica, Centroceras distichum and Grateloupia doryphora), five undescribed species (Antithamnion sp., Colaconema sp., Erythrocladia sp., Erythroglossum sp. and Pterosiphonia sp.) and one rhodophyte of uncertain affinity, probably representing a new genus in the Ceramiaceae. A new combination, Colaconema caespitosum (J. Ag.) comb. nov. is proposed.

A numerical classification of 170 descriptions of 112 species of Acrochaetiaceae results in clusters which are neither comparable with generic circumscriptions suggested in the past, nor permit the division of the family into a number of better defined genera based on the consideration of different or additional character complexes. Thus all genera traditionally attributed to the Acrochaetiaceae can be included in the single generic epithet Audouinella. No formal subgeneric classification is proposed, although Audouinella is divided into a number of sections that in general correspond to groupings formed from numerical taxonomy. These groupings are delimited on the basis of standard morphological characteristics referring to habit, chloroplasts, pyrenoids and the structure of the basal system, without recourse to reproductive criteria.
