“‘Time Is a Flat Circle’: True Detective and the Specter of Moral Panic in American Pop Culture"

Abstract

This article uses the television series True Detective as a case study to examine an ongoing media cycle in which moral panics are inspired by popular culture and vice versa. In an interview about True Detective, writer Nic Pizzolatto hinted that a murderous cult portrayed in the show was based on media reports of an actual satanic cult. This detail resulted in a wave of sensationalistic online articles that sought to channel True Detective's popularity by speculating on the reality of criminal satanic cults. Not only do fictional media act as a plausibility structure that supports belief in criminal cults, but the reciprocal relationship between fictional stories and actual claims creates a hegemonic discourse in which claims about evil conspiracies and the religious other can be promoted surreptitiously. This arrangement serves to mask the power behind claims of evil conspiracies and raises ethical questions about depicting such conspiracies in fictional media.

... While the "panic" was by definition misplaced, we should not dismiss True Detective's satanic adversary as simply clichéd fantasy. In Joseph Laycock's (2015) view, tales such as this provide plausibility structures that bolster a decidedly Manichean ontology. The first season of the HBO series True Detective has drawn attention to Eugene Thacker’s horror of philosophy trilogy and his tripartite mode of thinking of the world and the subject’s relation to it. This article is an effort to read Thacker’s speculative realism into a critique of the police power. Where the police concept is vital to sustaining the Cartesian world-for-us, a world of mass-consumption and brutal privation, the limitations, failures or absence of police might also reveal horizons of disorder—primitivism, anarchism—the world-in-itself. A critical reading of True Detective and other police stories suggests that even its most violent and corrupt forms, as inseparable from security, law and order, the police power is never beyond redemption. What is rendered unthinkable then is the third ontological position—a world-without-police—as it exposes the frailties of the present social order and the challenges of thinking outside the subject.

The idea of the tourist being an outsider in an unfamiliar setting and occupying a liminal state is well-rehearsed in the study of tourism. This chapter examines these issues in relation to the 2014 HBO drama True Detective. The chapter explores questions around the symbolic role of the ‘other’ and ‘stranger’ in narratives of place and mobility – focused here on the liminal landscapes of rural Louisiana and the strangeness of the outsider – embodied in the character of Detective Rust Cohle. We also consider the real-and-imagined geographies of the Louisiana swamplands as a mythic space and the implications for their representation in tourism imagery.

Negative perceptions resulting from heavy media exposure surrounding membership in minority religions affect how individuals process information about such group membership. This was apparent in the United States during moral panics in the second half of the twentieth century involving new religious movements (often called “cults”) and individuals actually or allegedly involved in Satanism. This negatively biased information processing presumably carried over into the legal system. One important example involved judges and jurors charged with determining guilt and proper punishment for crimes of persons suspected of Satanist group activity. An analysis of jury decision-making in civil and criminal cases from the height of the Satanism scare in the late 1980s and early 1990s reveals some possibly biased judgments toward individuals and organizations allegedly and admittedly involved in Satanic practice. An examination of more recent legal cases shows that, although media coverage of Satanist groups has diminished, cases still occur in which allegations of Satanic practice may be used as a means of generating bias, illustrating the persistence of such ideas in society. However, courts more recently have become more discerning in dealing with such claims, and with Satanism itself, thus contributing to the decline of moral panic.

Lovecra entend marquer que l'existentialisme nihiliste a connu, sous certains de ses aspects, un prolongement au sein du milieu "holiste" et occulte depuis les années 1960. Dans un essai long et pénétrant paru en 1991, l'écrivain français Michel Houellebecq a mis l'accent sur le nihilisme radical qui sous-tend les écrits de Lovecra. Or, le présent article veut montrer que la perspective radicalement "désenchantée" qui sous-tend l'œuvre lovecra ienne n'est nullement incompatible avec le fait qu'il utilise certains thèmes tirés de l'histoire de l'ésotérisme occidental, non plus qu'avec le fait que, depuis les années 1960, des occultistes ont embrassé avec un grand enthousiasme son univers defiction. Selon la perspective de l'auteur, la suite d'histoires racontant la "quête de rêve" (dream-quest) du protagoniste Howard Carter, d'une part, et les histoires d'horreur fondées sur la "mythologie Cthulhu", d'autre part, sont les deux aspects d'une même médaille, en ce sens que cette suite représenterait le désir de Lovecra de "fuir la réalité" pour un monde de rêves, tandis que ces histoires d'horreur suggèreraient que derrière l'écran vide et prosaïque de la réalité désenchantée se cache une réalité plus profonde encore, faite d'horreur pure. Dans sa partie nale, l'article traite de ce phénomène surprenant qu'est le "chaos magick" lovecra ien, avec ses rituels d'invocations de divinités ou de démons lovecra iens. Ces invocations ne sont pas l'expression de quelque croyance naïve selon laquelle les entités de Lovecra existeraient réellement au lieu d'appartenir à la ction; elles sont plutôt l'expression d'un refus bien plus radical, "postmoderne", de la distinction même entre ction et réalité. Et pourtant, les magiciens du chaos ne peuvent pas toujours s'arranger pour maintenir cette position de façon constante; sous leur déconstructionisme radical on peut voir poindre ici et là, en e et, une aspiration romantique, celle d'un ré-enchantement du monde.
