The invention relates to an in vitro method for producing spontaneously contracting fish cell aggregates, to the fish cell aggregates obtained thereby, and to the use thereof, in particular for testing biological active substances and pharmaceuticals. The in vitro method according to the invention for producing contracting fish cell aggregates comprises the following steps: a) mechanical comminution and/or partial enzymatic digestion of fish embryos or fish larvae; b) transfer of the comminuted and/or partially digested fish tissue into an enzyme-free medium and removing the supernatant by centrifuging to obtain a cell pellet; c) re-suspension of the cell pellet in a cell culture medium; d) culturing the cells, with the medium being changed at least once, until spontaneously contracting cell aggregates form.

Spatial–Temporal Variations in Fish Larvae and Juveniles in the Surf Zone Along the Coast of Jiangsu...

Surf zones are important nursery grounds for fish larvae and juveniles. However, little is known about fish larvae and juveniles in the surf zone along the coast of Jiangsu Province. The fish larvae and juveniles were ... [Show full abstract] sampled using a seine net (1m × 4m; 1 mm mesh aperture), with sampling repeated three times at each station per month. A total of 1435 fish larvae and juveniles were collected, belonging to 42 species and 37 genera in 21 families. Almost half of them were postflexion larvae. Gobiidae, with 14 species, was the most diverse family. Based on the index of relative importance (IRI) result, the dominant species was Amoya pflaumi, accounting for 35.33% of the total number of individuals collected. Common species were Mugil cephalus, Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, Acanthogobius ommaturus, Mugilogobius abei, Thryssa mystax, Periophthalmus modestus, Sillago sihama, and Mugilogobius myxodermus. All other species were classified as rare. No fish larvae or juveniles were collected in February 2024 and January 2025. The species number, catch per unit effort (CPUE), Margalef’s richness index, Pielou’s evenness index, and Shannon–Wiener diversity index showed similar trends, and significant differences could be found for each parameter among sampling months. The cluster analysis from the ten months (excluding February 2024 and January 2025) indicated a significant seasonal change in the community structure of fish larvae and juveniles. Fish larvae and juveniles were abundant and diverse at one station near an aquaculture tidal flat for seaweed. This study provides essential basic data to support the management and conservation of fishery resources in the surf zone along the coast of Jiangsu Province.

Divergent Leakage Features of Anticyclonic and Cyclonic Mesoscale Eddies

Results display that AE and CE, in the Northern Hemisphere, tend to release the water masses by the left and right sides along their tracks, respectively. And they choose the other side in the Southern Hemisphere. Analyses imply that the inverse relative vorticity gradient between AE and CE contributes to this divergent leakage pattern. This study offers a new perspective on the leakage of mesoscale eddies and may also be important in investigating the distribution of some oceanic particles/materials such as fish larvae, and microplastics.

[Show full abstract] pattern in the yearly average larval biodiversity, which appears to be linked to the alternating cyclonic/anticyclonic surface circulation of the North Ionian Gyre (NIG), associated with the Adriatic–Ionian bimodal oscillating system (BiOS). Specifically, the cyclonic mode of NIG, by enhancing the advection of Modified Atlantic Water (MAW) toward the southern Levantine Basin and reducing its deflection toward the Adriatic, is supposed to intensify the frontal thermohaline structure, thus inducing higher retention/survival rates for fish larval stages and, definitively, resulting in higher biodiversity. The association between total fish larval density and biodiversity with available environmental data, namely, satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST) and in situ temperature, salinity, and surface current speed, corroborates this hypothesis. Finally, the observed changes in the biodiversity of the larval fish community would result from increased/reduced retention time for fish larvae (and accordingly, slower/faster larval dispersal) across the frontal area, as induced by the alternating cyclonic–anticyclonic modes of NIG. These results pave the way for future investigations on the role of surface circulation patterns in the dynamics of fish populations, with special emphasis on the effects of retention processes on fish larval stages.

Larval and juvenile fish assemblages in the Hudson Bay system

In the Hudson Bay system, changes in the diets of seabirds and seals over the past four decades suggested a gradual displacement of polar cod (Boreogadus saida) by capelin (Mallotus villosus) and to a lesser extent by sand lance (Ammodytes spp.). [Show full abstract] this study, we combined age-0 fish samples from various expeditions, forming the most extensive fish dataset in the region to date, and laying down baseline information about distribution and abundances of fish species within the Hudson Bay system. The fish larvae assemblages indicate that there are three key age-0 fish larvae species in the Hudson Bay system; polar cod, capelin, and sand lance. Capelin larvae were by far the most abundant overall (maximum of 5841 individuals 1000 m⁻³), but assemblages containing polar cod were more widespread across the region and had little geographical overlap with capelin. Polar cod larvae were on average 20 mm larger than capelin larvae, suggesting different prey size spectra and thus little food competition. However, polar cod larvae overlapped temporally, geographically, and in size with northern sand lance (Ammodytes dubius) larvae. We conclude that the co-distribution of ichthyoplankton species in the Hudson Bay system shows no conclusive evidence that capelin have completely displaced polar cod in this region yet.
