Debate: The Microcomputer: Miracle or Menace in Mathematics Education

We have seen throughout this Congress the influence of modern technology on mathematics teaching. Many interesting talks have been given that have involved this topic. I think it has come up in every one of our formal sessions and in many of the other discussions that have taken place at this Congress. As was expected, there has been much disagreement about the place of technology in mathematics education, and so it was decided to bring these varying points of view to a focus at our final plenary technology session this morning.

Analyticity and Systematicity Students of Mathematics Education on Solving Non-routine Problems

The purpose of this research is to describe the disposition of critical thinking of mathematics education students especially analyticity and systematicity component when solving the non-routine problem (the problem that is not logical and incomplete). This ... [Show full abstract] research is a qualitative descriptive study. The stages in this study are first, students are given three non-routine questions. The second stage, the researchers observed directly and recorded the subject when working on the problem. Third, interviewing the subject related to non-routine problem resolution. Fourth, concluded by describing the disposition of critical thinking of mathematics teacher candidate students, especially analyticity and systematicity components. The results showed that the disposition of critical thinking of first-year college students in mathematics education major is still low. They have not analyzed the problems and answers well and have not written the answers in order and lack of focus when solving non-routine problems. They did not yet have a high sense about the irregularities of the problem. It is highly recommended for further research that there is a need for advanced development to improve the disposition of critical thinking students.

In this study, which was conducted with 20 preservice teachers participated in the instruction focused on mathematical thinking, it was aimed to determine preservice teachers’ skills in planning of teaching focusing on mathematical thinking in the school practice. [Show full abstract] classroom activity carried out by students, that focuses their attention on a specific mathematical thought was defined as a mathematical task and the preservice teachers were asked to make plans for school practice using mathematical tasks of their choice. The plans made by preservice teachers were analyzed with a scoring rubric for attention to students’ thinking. The rubric is a tool relevant to the theoretical framework of the research. In the analysis, it was observed that the plans made by preservice teachers got high scores in total and according to the dimensions of the rubric which are mathematical goal, anticipating students’ correct and incorrect thinking, asking questions that are assessing and advancing students’ thinking, discussion that is based on students’ thinking and that is making the mathematics clear. Accordingly, it was concluded that the preservice teachers could focus on students' mathematical thinking in their plans made for school practice.

This breadth was well represented in the ... [Show full abstract] papers accepted for presentation in the Topic Study Group at ICME12. In order to facilitate discussion, the paper presentations in each session were divided into two sets, with participants choosing which set to attend. This allowed the discussion to focus in greater depth on common themes. In addition, one session of the TSG was devoted to a panel discussion on the topic of “Theoretical and methodological issues in studying language in mathematics education” and a final plenary meeting enabled participants to reflect on the TSG as a whole, the common issues addressed, the lessons learnt and aspirations for future work on the topic. In this report, we present an overview of the major themes arising in the papers presented and in the discussions during the congress.

It argues ... [Show full abstract] that representatives of the main protagonists in the debate (the First, Second and Third Worlds) can be seen in action as early as the 1940s. It suggests that the differences within each group have often been just as fierce as those between groups, and that each of the groups as well as the individual states within the groups, have been affected both by the debate and subsequently by the existence of the Human Rights Declaration (1948) and two Covenants on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and Civil and Political Rights (which were opened for signature in 1966 and came into force in 1976). It will also note that all three instruments were designed to have worldwide significance and to cross ideological and cultural barriers. As a result there is a certain ideological neutrality and eclecticism about all three which enabled them to serve as a common focus for numerous states and individuals.2
