The poems offered in Love and Separation, just as the poems in rosarot und schwarz (2008, Deutscher Lyrik Verlag), originated from my ethnographic fieldwork on identity that I conducted in Germany and the USA. Love and separation are topics that everyone grapples with; and thus, these topics often came up when I conducted my ethnographic fieldwork on identity. As I was trying to understand my participants, trying to see the world from their perspectives, and trying to freeze my understanding of their feelings, I would often jot down poems. Sometimes I wrote these poems from their perspective, other times I wrote them from my observer’s point of view.

All readers, irrespective of their systematic viewpoint, will label this treatise as an important job well done. Furthermore, the text is very readable considering the type of material covered. An analysis of Falkenlieder ("falcon-songs") demonstrates how the texts combine models from different genres. This technique of combination results in a phenomenon which may be termed "textual hybridity". The dominant role played by grotesque motifs is compared with the analogous dominance of ... Subverting the institutionalized reading tour: Rafik schami and Daniel Kehlmann

Given the demands placed upon Germany’s authors through the institutionally organized reading circuit, contemporary authors sometimes turn their experiences of these tours into themes in their own works. [Show full abstract] significant focus: Rafik Schami’s ‘Sieben Doppelgänger’ (1999) and Daniel Kehlmann’s ‘Ruhm’ (2009). Both texts treat the difficulties and irritations to which authors are subject when they engage in such tours. While Schami’s novel uses the motif of the Double to explore Germans’ (mis)perception of cultural alterity and to underscore why the author took a hiatus from the reading circuit late in the 1990s, Kehlmann’s ‘Ruhm’, in which the institutionalized reading tour constitutes only one, albeit significant, thread, broadly examines issues of celebrity and identity in our highly technological age.
